(Wang Hong is studying for her Ph. D. in America. She is working in the same lab with her friend Carl Cooper. )

C: Hey Wang. I hear you just had a paper published. I’d like to take you out tomorrow evening to dinner to celebrate. How about it?

W: oh, no. That’s really not necessary. Why don’t you come over and have dinner with me?

C: I wouldn’t hear of it. On my birthday you made me the best Chinese dinner I’ve ever had. I’m not much of a cook myself, but it would give me great pleasure to take you out to eat. You choose. Any kind of food you like.

Dialogue B: “How About Some American Food?”

W: What do you mean “any kind of food”?C:

My country is a place where people from all over the world come to live, so we can enjoy great cooking from every corner of the world. We can eat Italian, French, German, Japanese food—you name it, we’ve got it. Or we can even go down to Chinatown for a good Chinese dinner if you like.

W: How about some American food? But not too expensive. An expensive place would make me uncomfortable.

C: Ok. We’ll go to a nice little place I know where you can get some plain, old-fashioned American cooking.

W: Great. I will pick you up at your office about 5. Ok?

C: Good. See you tomorrow at 5.

Passage A: Can We Have You Join Us?

me on Saturday, May 21st, at 6 p.m., and would love to have you join us. As you know, Prof. and Mrs. Harvey Taylor have just returned from China, and they will be sharing some of their experiences with us then. Passage B: Table Manners in China

There are some table manners and other rules you should follow to make your stay in a Chinese host’s home happier, though you will be forgiven if you have no knowledge of what they are.

Never stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl, since that signal usually appears on the funeral and is deemed extremely impolite to the host and seniors present.

Make sure the spout of the teapot is not facing anyone. The proper way is to make it direct outward form the table.

Don’t tap on your bowl with your chopsticks, since that will be deemed insult to the host or the chef.

Never try to turn a fish over and debone it by yourself, since the separation of the fish skeleton from the lower half of the fish will usually be performed by the host or a waiter. Some people may (superstitiously, perhaps) deem that it will ensue bad luck and a fishing boat might capsize if you do so.
