An Overview of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a fungus infection that causes an itchy rash between the toes. The ailment is caused by a fungus that prospers on warm, damp skin. It is extremely contagious, easily passed between two people or contracted by walking on infected floors. Symptoms of athlete’s foot include red, cracked skin between the toes, an unpleasant odor, and an itching and burning sensation.

An Overview of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot can be cared for at home with antifungal cream, which should be applied to the infected area and an inch beyond, at least twice a day. The cream should be used until the rash is cleared, and then an additional week after. During this time, the infected foot should be kept dry and out in the open as much as possible. Synthetic fiber socks are preferable to cotton socks, since they keep feet drier and cooler. Individuals with athlete’s foot should avoid scratching itchy areas, because scratching will make the infection last longer.

If you follow the above steps and your athlete’s foot persists, you should contact your doctor.
