INDUSTRY PROFILE
Wet grinder, a grinder used with water. Wet grinders have a wide application in
industry, workshops, and commercial and domestic kitchens throughout Africa and Asia.
Kitchen wet grinders are very popular tools in the South Indian kitchen used to make paste
out of soaked grains and lentils.
At one time, a wet grinder consisted of a large rock with a hole in it, where a
cylindrical rock with a wooden handle fit in. The grain and lentil mixture was poured in with
water and the cylinder rotated by the handle on the top to grind the food together. The ground
paste is used for various food items like idli, dosa, sevai and vada.
The evolution of grinders has a dramatic change in the working. The earlier form of
wet grinder called "Attan Kallu" used mechanical energy in which the user had to rotate the
top stone called "Kullavi" to grind the medium. The invention of electricity led to the
development of electric-powered wet grinders. By this invention, the powered wet grinders
have both the top and the base stone rotating. These electric models were first introduced in
restaurants, and later moved into the home.
Most modern models still have stone components for the grinding action. The stone is
usually granite. The old manual grinding stones used to be refinished for better results.
Modern stones usually don't need refinishing, as they last much longer.
Despite these advances in bringing technology into Indian kitchens, there are
limitations.

18
FINANCE DEPARTMENT
SERVICE DEPARTMENT
HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT
PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT
Finance Dept
The finance department takes responsibility for organising the financial and
accounting affairs including the preparation and presentation of appropriate accounts, and the
provision of financial information for managers. The main areas covered by the financial
department include:
1. Book keeping procedures.
Keeping records of the purchases and sales made by a business as well

as capital spending. These records today are typically kept on computer files. But we
still use the term ledger entries to refer to the days when all financial transactions were
carefully recorded in thick books (ledgers).
2. Creating a balance sheet and profit and loss account.
Financial statements need to be produced at given time intervals, for example at
the end of each financial year. Trial balances are extracted from the ledger entries to
create a Balance Sheet showing the assets and liabilities of a business at the year end. In
addition, records of purchases and sales are totalled up to create a Profit and Loss (P&L)
account.
3. Providing management information.
Managers require ongoing financial information to enable them to make better
decisions. For example, they will want information about how much it costs to produce
a particular product or service, in order to assess how much to produce and whether it
might be more worthwhile to switch to making an alternative product.
4. Management of wages.
The wages section of the finance department will be responsible for calculating
the wages and salaries of employees and organising the collection of income
tax and national insurance for the Inland Revenue.
5. Raising of finance.
The finance department will also be responsible for the technical details of how a
business raises finance e.g. through loans, and the repayment of interest on that finance.
In addition it will supervise the payment of dividends to shareholders.
Service Dept
20
Though many corporations view customer service departments as a cost centre rather
than a beneficial or profitable enterprise, these organizations often serve a multitude of roles.
From helping customers resolve questions to generating valuable data and even new sales,
customer service departments help boost the company's bottom line while retaining
customers and even garnering new business.
Customer Service
The primary duty of a customer service department, is to answer customer inquiries
and provide information about the company's products and services. When a customer places
an order, he may want to follow up with a live person to confirm the order or get answers to
questions about the product or service. Customer service departments typically meet this need
by providing a point of contact where customers can call, email or chat online with a live
person knowledgeable about company systems and practices.

Trouble Resolution
The Bureau of Labour and Statistics points out that, in some cases, customer
questions become complaints. If the company experiences difficulty fulfilling a customer's
order, or if the ordered product arrives broken, customer service agents may receive the
complaint. On occasion, the customer may express concern over treatment received from
another department within the company, a sales agent or personnel at a retail location; in
these situations, the customer service agent may bear responsibility for resolving the conflict
and smoothing the customer experience. Regardless of the trouble, customer service
departments become agents for customer retention during periods of customer frustration.
When a customer has a problem or complaint about an experience with the company, the
customer service department can help determine whether the customer grants the
organization return business or seeks service elsewhere.
Personnel Dept

ASST. MANAGER
Typically personnel work is concerned with:
1. The recruitment and selection of new employees, e.g. helping to prepare job
advertisements and job descriptions for new posts, and helping to organise the interview
process.
2. The induction of new employees where they are introduced to the company, and aspects of
the job they will be doing as well as essential requirements such as health and safety training.
3. Training and development. Training focuses on the needs of the organisation whereas
development is more concerned with identifying and meeting the needs of individual
employees.
4. Organising the appraisal process to identify development needs of employees.
5. Representing the organisation as a go between on disciplinary issues e.g. when a worker
has continuously been late for work. Dismissing and making workers redundant where
necessary.
6. Managing payment systems, although this will probably be the responsibility of a separate
payroll section.
7. Taking responsibility for the motivation of employees by outlining motivational work
practices.
8. Organising the termination of work, and retirement of employees, as well as job
redundancies where appropriate.
Nowadays the emphasis is on the Human Resources Department providing a service, which
enables many of the activities to be carried out by relevant departments within an
organisation but with support and guidance from Human Resources.
23
Production Dept
Production is the functional area responsible for turning inputs into finished outputs
through a series of production processes. The Production Manager is responsible for making
sure that raw materials are provided and made into finished goods effectively. Manager must
make sure that work is carried out smoothly, and must supervise procedures for making work
more efficient and more enjoyable.

Five production sub-functions
The production function may be split into five sub-functions:
1. The production and planning department will set standards and targets for each section of
the production process. The quantity and quality of products coming off a production line
will be closely monitored. In businesses focusing on lean production, quality will be
monitored by all employees at every stage of production, rather than at the end as is the case
for businesses using a quality control approach.
2. The purchasing department will be responsible for providing the materials, components
and equipment required to keep the production process running smoothly. A vital aspect of
this role is ensuring stocks arrive on time and to the right quality.
3. The stores department will be responsible for stocking all the necessary tools, spares, raw
materials and equipment required to service the manufacturing process. Where sourcing is
unreliable, buffer stocks will need to be kept and the use of computerised stock
control systems helps keep stocks at a minimal but necessary level for production to
continue unhindered.
4. The design and technical support department will be responsible for researching new
products or modifications to existing ones, estimating costs for producing in different
quantities and by using different methods. It will also be responsible for the design and
testing of new product processes and product types, together with the development of
prototypes through to the final product. The technical support department may also be
responsible for work study and suggestions as to how working practices can be improved.
5. The works department will be concerned with the manufacture of products. This will
include the maintenance of the production line and other necessary repairs. The works
department may also have responsibility for quality control and inspection.
