It is intended to give students the opportunity to submit and publish their neuroscience research so that they can experience the entire research process. IMPULSE offers an outlet for students’ work, which often goes unpublished. It provides a mechanism for students to learn about the reviewing, editing, and publishing (posting) side of research as well. The editorial and review board comprises students from the US and around the world. The reviewing is done by student teams at the host institution (where they are required to take a Scientific Publishing class; see Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience http://www. funjournal.org/results.asp? juneid =159), with the Faculty Advisor overseeing the process. The reviews from students at other schools, domestic and international, are included by the International Editors. All reviewers have the option of receiving the faculty advisor’s comments on their reviews. The first issue was posted in July, 2004. During the second year the publishing format was revised so that articles could be posted immediately upon acceptance. This reduces the time-to-posting to as little as two months. It is hoped that this will encourage more submissions and allow IMPULSE to continue to grow and serve this population of dynamic, future neuroscientists and their mentors. The 2007 issue is currently open for articles with one article posted and one in press. The journal’s first major team transition occurred successfully in Spring of 2005; the second major transition, with a new Editor-in- Chief preparing to take over, has started and will be completed by May 2007. Recruiting for new review team members and article submissions continues as an ongoing process.
