Una valutazione completa del ciclo di vita (LCA) basata su basi scientifiche è il metodo standardizzato per un confronto imparziale degli impatti ambientali di diversi prodotti o servizi.
Questo tipo di valutazione comporta la raccolta sistematica e la valutazione dei dati quantitativi sugli input e gli output di materiali, energia e flussi di rifiuti associati a un prodotto lungo l'intero ciclo di vita.
Pertanto l'analisi dei costi di diversi materiali deve considerare aspetti diversi:
■ Costo della materia prima
■ Costi di installazione e trasporto
■ Costi ambientali (smaltimento o rielaborazione del prodotto a fine vita)
■ Costi di manutenzione
■ Costi di produzione
■ Invecchiamento a lungo termine e resistenza allo stress
■ Condizioni di servizio (temperatura, pressione, sostanze chimiche, ecc.)

L'impatto ambientale di ciascun materiale per tubi è stato valutato sulla base di sei diversi criteri per tutto il suo ciclo di vita.
Potenziale di "svuotamento abiotico": la sovra-estrazione di minerali, combustibili fossili e altri
materiali non viventi non rinnovabili che possono portare all'esaurimento delle risorse naturali.
Potenziale di acidificazione: le emissioni, come il biossido di zolfo e gli ossidi di azoto, dai
processi di fabbricazione, provocano la pioggia acida che danneggia il suolo, le riserve
idriche, gli organismi umani e animali e l'ecosistema.
Potenziale di "eutrofizzazione": derivante dalla sovra-fertilizzazione di acqua e suolo da parte
di sostanze nutritive (come azoto e fosforo). Questo accelera la crescita delle piante e uccide
la vita animale nei laghi e nei corsi d'acqua.
Il potenziale del riscaldamento globale (la sua impronta di carbonio): l'effetto isolante dei gas
serra - CO2 e metano - nell'atmosfera contribuisce in maniera determinante al riscaldamento
globale, influenzando sia la salute umana sia quella dell'ecosistema in cui viviamo.

In questa presentazione abbiamo mostrato il posizionamento delle poliolefine rispetto ai
materiali convenzionali nelle varie applicazioni dei tubi.
