Technical Note 412 contains analyses andrelated source data for 311 natural gas sam-ples from 13 States. Of the total samples,309 were collected during calendar years1998 through 2001. The analyses were madeusing mass spectroscopy and gas chromatog-raphy. None of the analyses have been pub-lished previously in other analyses reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as

part of the United States Department of theInterior’s Bureau of Land Managementinvestigations of the occurrences of helium innatural gases of countries with free-marketeconomies. The results of these investiga-tions are published periodically to makethe information available to members ofthe helium and petroleum industries andto the general public.

Bureau of Land Management TechnicalNote 412, Analyses of Natural Gases,1998–2001, contains analyses and relatedsource data for 311 natural gas samplesfrom 13 States. Of the total samples, 309were collected during calendar years 1998through 2001. The remaining two were col-lected earlier, but releases granting permissionto publish them were received at a later date.None of these analyses have been publishedpreviously in other analyses reports.

The analyses were made using mass spec-troscopy and gas chromatography. Allsamples were obtained and analyzed aspart of the Bureau of Land Managementinvestigations of the occurrences of helium innatural gases of countries with free-marketeconomies. This helium survey programhas been conducted since 1917. Theresults are published periodically to makethe information available to members ofthe helium and petroleum industries andto the general public.

Forty-two publications have presented theresults of 16,058 gas analyses performedthrough 1997. These publications are refer-enced at the end of this report in the sec-tion “Previous Publications in the HeliumSurvey Series.”

The first three bulletins (1–3)1 containanalyses and related source data on 5,218gas samples collected from 1917 through

1960. These bulletins have been supple-mented periodically by information circu-lars and technical notes (4–17, 19–24,26–30, 32–36, 38–42) containing 10,840analyses of samples collected since 1960.

In 1976, a compilation of the analysesmade prior to 1975 was prepared by theUnited States Bureau of Mines (USBM)and published by the National TechnicalInformation Service of the United StatesDepartment of Commerce (18). The 1976compilation contains 10,562 analyses of gassamples from gas and oil wells and naturalgas pipelines in 37 States and 23 foreigncountries.

Three other compilations of analyses havebeen published (25, 31, 37) by the USBM.The first of these was published in 1982and contained analyses performed prior to1981. The 1982 publication contains12,554 analyses of gas samples from gasand oil wells and natural gas pipelines in39 States and 24 foreign countries andincludes the analyses from the 1976 publi-cation (25). The second of these compila-tions was published in 1987 and contains14,242 analyses performed prior to 1986.The samples were taken from gas and oilwells and natural gas pipelines in 40 Statesand 24 foreign countries (31). In 1991, acompilation of analyses was completed as asupplement to the 1987 publication andcontains all analyses published from 1986

through 1990. The 1991 publication contains920 samples from gas and oil wells andnatural gas pipelines in 26 States and 2foreign countries (37).

In addition to appearing in the publica-tions, all analyses and related informationpublished through 1997 are available onCD-ROM from the National TechnicalInformation Service (NTIS) in Springfield,Virginia (1-800-553-NTIS). Orders shouldrefer to Bureau of Land ManagementCD-ROM PB98-502206. The update tothe 1997 CD-ROM, which will include

the 1998–2001 analyses, should be avail-able for purchase around the time thisreport is published.

The helium survey program is conductedby soliciting natural gas samples fromthroughout the United States and othercountries with free-market economies. Thehelium survey, in its present scope, wouldnot be possible without the assistance ofthe helium and petroleum industries, Stateand Federal agencies, and the many indi-viduals engaged in oil and gas explorationand production.

Tables 1 and 2—the main focus of thistechnical note—include the results ofanalyses and related source data from thegas samples. This information is dividedinto two groups. Table 1 contains infor-mation on samples from gas and oil wellsin the United States. Table 2 containsinformation on samples from natural gaspipelines in the United States. The following

chart indicates the sources of the sampleslisted in these tables. All components ofthe analyses in the tables are reported tothe nearest 0.1percent, except helium, whichis reported to the nearest 0.01percent. Theword “trace” is used to denote quantitiesof helium of less than 0.005 percent andquantities of other components of less than0.05 percent.

Tables 1 and 2 also include geologic provincecodes so each sample source can be locatedwithin a specific geologic province as definedby the Committee on Statistics of Drillingof the American Association of PetroleumGeologists. The provinces and their associatedcodes are provided in the list that follows andare also illustrated in Figure 12. They are

delineated by political boundaries for conve-nience and for accommodation of the dataprocessing equipment. Because not all of theprovinces shown are gas-producing areas, many of the codes are not used in this publi-cation. In addition, since State or Federalownership is not always known in offshoreareas, only one code is used for each State.Due to the lack of information on the loca-tion of wells in Alaska, only one code (972) isused for all wells.

2The list and Figure 1 are taken from the article cited as: Meyer, R.F. 1970. Geologic provinces code mapfor computer use: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 54, n. 7, p.1301-1305.
