Genre Elements Conventions in ‘Under the Sun’ by CherylPerformers/Characters-Representations, Stereotypes, Behaviour, Body Language, Specific Pop Stars

When we first see the central protagonist Cheryl we see straight away her body language is looking down in a saddened way. This indicates the theme of the video.

Genre Type – Performance, Narrative or Conceptual? Are there elements of each? Describe them. If there is a narrative what type of narrative is it?(Linear/Non Linear)

The video consists mainly of two genre types, performance and narrative. Cheryl performs throughout the video with dancing and singing but there are also elements of narrative to fit with her lyrics. Here we see she is with a male and is intimately touching his face then goes onto pushing him away. This shows that the lyrics are about a break up and getting over someone.

Iconography –Props, Symbolic Codes

This prop is used to signify that the central protagonist is waiting for something or has taken time to get over something. The lyrics in this song are about Cheryl getting over her ex-lover. The fact that she uses the clock as the symbolic code shows that in time she has changed her ways and she won’t be going back to the person she used to be when she was with him.

Setting – Mise en Scene The setting of this music video takes place firstly in bar which is relatable universally around the world. The protagonist then walks out into a 1960’s street. This is used to entice an older audience and to show the history of 1960’s Britain.

Technical and Audio Codes – Camera Use, Editing, Lighting, Diegetic/Non Diegetic Sound, SFX

The lighting throughout the video is high key which is popularly used in pop music videos

Neale’s Metal Machinery – How does the text meet the audience expectations? How does it conform to convention and/or deviate from convention?

The central protagonist leaving the bar and walking out into the light this way indicates she is free. This again shows she is strong headed and has chosen to leave the relationship.
