1. ANALYSING STUDENTS MUSIC VIDEOS BY HOLLY ETTY 2. Here I have analysed 2 students music videos. I chose two students that I felt completed their project at the standards and styles I would like to achieve at the end of my media coursework. They both incorporated similar ideas that work very well in different ways; thus allowing me to adapt and improve the ideas that I like for my own music video. 3. Amy Wichelows music video to Florence and The Machine Spectrum is a very well thought out and professional looking music video, and acts as a great example for a typical pop song. It shows only one female performer throughout the entirety of the song, which draws attention to her as the artist, especially as she is also miming. Amy clearly edited the video well as she managed to cut her footage to the beat of the song, which was especially effective when she used fast cuts as the song increased its pace and began to build nearing the chorus and the end. This enabled the attention to remain on the artist and for the music video to remain entertaining and interesting. Amys choice of location/props/costumes were highly effective as, despite the location only being the garden and the black studio, her use of interesting props such as the brightly lit lanterns and the bright purple prom dress really made the video work and kept a simplistic concept interesting and vibrant. Matched with a lot of interesting focus pulls, close ups and high angle shots, the props and costumes really stood out as a focal point within the video and kept it looking vibrant, as well as reflecting the songs upbeat feel. As well as this, the lip syncing was done extremely well as it was clear her chosen model was good at performing and was confident in front of the camera. This confidence really radiates to the audience and further makes the video exciting and enticing. If I was to give her video any improvements, I would suggest using more costumes/locations to further enhance the cool effects the ones already used give, but other than that, the video was clearly made to a high standard. 4. Claire Hanningtons music video is slightly different from Amys as it is to Kodaline Love Like This which has more of an indie, mellow feel to it, but still works as a highly professional looking music video. Contrasting with Amys it shows 3 people, 1 being the older woman looking back on her young love and the other two being the young lovers. This draws attention to the two lovers as they help to tell the story of the song which matches the lyrics perfectly. Claire also edited the video well as she managed to cut her footage to the beat of the song, which was especially effective when she cut the shots as the couple was dancing together. This enabled the attention to remain on the story the couple was telling through their body language, expression and dancing. Claires choice of location/props/costumes was also fairly simplistic yet highly effective as, despite the location only being the black studio and the older womans house, Claires use of interesting props such as the makeup, hair products and 50s styled outfits made the video endearing and kept a simplistic concept interesting and romantic. Matched with a lot of interesting slow motion focus pulls, close ups and high angle shots, the props and actions of the artists really stood out as a focal point within the video and continued to tell the narrative of the music video. As well as this, her chosen models were very good at performing and conveying the message of young love Claire wished to portray. This realistic performance really radiates to the audience and further makes the video engaging and enticing. If I was to give her video any improvements, I would suggest using more variation of shots such as cutting back to the older woman, but other than that, the video was clearly made to a high standard.
