Science – Grade 5, 8, 10 At grade five, 51% are not proficient in Science, at grade eight,
41% are not proficient and at grade ten, 57% are not proficient. Note that in 10th grade these students are taking Life Science, a
class offered for students who are not able to enroll in other more advanced science classes needed for college.

Biology – Grade 9 though 11 Thirty-five percent of high school students attempt biology, a
required lab science class for college attendance. Fifty-seven percent do not achieve proficiency.

Chemistry – Grades 9 through 11 Only 12 % of students in Monterey County attempt Chemistry. Sixty-six percent do not achieve proficiency.
