Analysis of the descent

Junos clothes

Junos clothes are red this is chose to show love anger and various emotions she has or has given others throughout the film.

Though not intentionally evil she is considered the most evil of all of the women in the film as she throws away the map and takes them to the wrong cave intentionally and unintentionally kills and dooms them all in the movie and its sequel she wittily kills more than her and her friends. The lighting is all natural as it is all outside in a real place.

The opening

The start of the horror film is three women Sarah,Juno and Beth go rafting when they stop they meet up with a man and little girl this is Sarah's family the husband gives junco a lustful look and she returns with a smile hinting something's going on between them but unknown to them Beth catches this and keeps it to her self then they all leave and Sarah and her husband talk in the car leading to a crash.

The crash

In the crash the camera changes multiple times in the time of ten seconds throughout the sequence but the camera is careful to not show any of the dead bodies as you are lead to believe only the husband died and no the daughter so its more of an emotional shock to the audience and the van drivers hand can be seen in the shot but nothing else so his fate was left unknown. The editing was quick so you could not see if the child was dead and you could not see Sarah's husbands dead body or the dead child's body within the shot (as there are legal issues with children in horror films)but they left the blood in to make sure people caught on to her death.

The hospital

The hospitals lighting is genius as they made it look like two different locations using a very good simple trick of a light with a green tint or using it in editing and using natural light in a non hospital nightmare scene.

Juno’s choice

Though it was a small choice her picking up the book as changed the film drastically as it is because of that they are lost though the caves wouldn't’t be on their as its systems have not been discovered yet. In the scene the book is a bright yellow sticking out from the dark boring background. This single quick scene shows who she is straight away and how she needs to do everything her way as she obviously thinks she is a born leader and she is the leader of the girls group.

The Descent We find the women going taking their decent down a cave they all

think will be fun and games and relaxation for them to do as little do they know that this is a different cave as it is uncharted overall and it is because of a bad choice Juno made and will continue to doAs she thinks she is the leader though she does not have the that a leader needs like looking out for others and caring about the team and her personal goals.

The cave

The young women explore the cave and encounter the cave collapse and in the moment the girls escape and are stuck with no way out leaving Juno to admit she doesn't’t know the way out as the cave has never been explored before and they may be the first in there for years and there may not even be a way out.

The crawler

When we see our first crawler we see it has an human appearance and it is shown to be a more monster than human. They are shown as covered in dirt and are shown to have claws and sharp teeth to show a hunter appearance the lighting is a camera watching in the dark with night vision so we get a good glimpse of a crawler. The camera is shaky as it is being held by hand as this is all being shown.

S

This scenes soundtrack was triumphant music such as horns

and loud happily themed music the audience is meant to feel shocked that Sarah has finally escaped the caves.

S

The music begins to change to a sad and triumphant music which leaves the audience confused as after everything the ending is still sad to watch due to her not winning anything except barely her life.

S

The music remains the same and leaves a sad trail with her the audience sees Sarah drive as fast as she can away

from the crawlers and to safety leaving us with relief.

S

The scenes shows Sarah breaking down in her car and just trying to get over her traumatic experience and the music gets sadder and leaves the audience sadder still.

S

The music jumps to cords being strung violently and leaves the audience scared as Juno scares her friend as

she is supposed to be dead now.

S

The music is sad as is the audience as we watch Sarah watch her imaginary child as the camera zooms out and

leaves her with crawlers screaming everywhere.

Encounter

They later while exploring the cave trying to find the way out find a race of humans who have lived in the caves for generations who have adjusted to hearing only and they lose a few of there friends and run to escape and Juno accidently killed one of the women who later before she dies gives Sarah a necklace telling her that Juno slept with her husband leaving Sarah to mentally and physically stop caring for Juno for the betrayal that Juno once again has done. Sarah imagines her daughter with her birthday cake and sits there laughing maniacally while the camera blacks out.
