There is non-diegetic music playing throughout the opening two minutes. It’s an orchestra playing and sounds menacing and dark – an indication to what the film will portray. There is a slow tracking across the rooftops of what the Establishing shot portrays to be London. The music sounds cold and spooky. The rooftops and chimney’s look dirty and grey. The sky indicates it’s night time and the mixture of blues suggest cold weather – matching the effect of the music. There are diegetic lightening sounds which enhance the dark natured music. The opening credits are fading in and out quickly in white writing. This makes them stand out in front of the background. The production credits appear in the centre of the screen. The bottom is an Establishing shot and so the credits can show in the centre because it isn’t one detail you have to focus on. Whereas on the following shots the credits are moved to the left or right avoiding objects you should be looking at. Among the raindrops hitting the screen when showing London there are red droplets which you presume to be blood. This also implies a twisted plot.

The camera stills on this chair in the centre with the splash of blood purposely placed for the audience. The chair is isolated and positioned in the light, highlighting it’s importance. The lighting is low key and everything is coming across quite sinister. The non-diegetic music introduces a flute which plays a quieter tune as we follow this trail of blood (top right). The cast is being shown next to the flowing blood. It becomes clearer why we saw blood with the raindrops now. We follow the blood and are shown the turning of a machines mechanism. Everything is animated which creates the mystery as to whether this is real or not. We then drop and as the background is dark and blurred the title comes up with ‘Sweeney Todd’ in red – linking to the blood and suggesting danger. ‘The demon barber of fleet street’ is in white which is a pure colour and contrasts with the word ‘demon’ – the opposite of angelic and pure. As we plunge downwards the tune played by the flute is repeated but accompanied by a large orchestra and so the impact is hard hitting and creates a stressed atmosphere. The lonely stream of blood now joins a significant quantity and spirals whilst continuing to present credits. This is the opening two minutes.
