ABSTRACT
Grammar error is an error made by learners in grammar. In learning language, mastery of
grammar is needed because it gives knowledge for learner to convey information clearly and to
use correct sentence patterns. Mastering grammar knowledge will help speaking English, because
learners will understand how to arrange words in the sentence, what tense will be used, and how
to use appropriate utterance. In this context, the researcher attempted to analyze what grammatical
errors made by third-semester student of the English Language Department in a teaching and
learning English activity. The aim of this research was to find grammatical errors made by third-

The researcher used descriptive qualitative approach and surface strategy taxonomy by
Dulay (1982) to categorize the grammatical error. The participant of this study were 10 students
on third-semester student that asked to record their speaking performance of daily routine for 1-2
minutes. The record data of third-semester students showed that the researcher obtained 125
grammatical errors from the dialogue of the students’ speaking performance; 28 omission, 40
addition, 50 misformation, and 7 misordering. The researcher hopes this study can be a good
material to ease the teacher sets the better way of teaching English speaking in order to improve
