About the Authors:

A revised and updated English version of an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate textbook based on several decades of teaching experience. The term ‘inorganic’ is used in a broad sense as the book covers the structural chemistry of representative elements (including carbon) in the Periodic Table, organometallics, coordination polymers, host-guest systems and supramolecular assemblies. Part I of the book reviews the basic bonding theories, including a chapter on computational chemistry. Part II introduces point groups and space groups and their chemical applications. Part III comprises a succinct account of the structural chemistry of the elements in the periodic table. It presents structure and bonding, generalizations of structural trends, crystallographic data, as well as highlights from the recent literature.

About the Authors:

This series of short textbooks prepared by well- known authors is an attempt to deliver the vast knowledge of chemistry in a more concise yet comprehensive format for easy understanding and learning by the users. Need for this type of material has been strongly felt by the students studying chemistry at UG and PG levels for quite sometime and hence this product.

Each title of the series is independent by itself and presupposes only a very little fore-knowledge for use. The content has been developed following a basic undergraduate and plus level, avoiding any sophistication and show of expertise.

Ÿ The subject-matter presented in each book, though concise, has adequate coverage of this subject.

Ÿ The important points wherever necessary have been highlighted.

Ÿ Complex portion of the content has been interpreted in an easy to grasp manner.

Ÿ Long sequences of references of reactions have been summarized in short run flowcharts.

Ÿ Would be ideal for preparation of competitive examinations like NET, GATE and Civil Services

About the Book :

About the Authors :

This book will be useful for the Engineering and Science graduates, postgraduates and researchers of various universities in India and abroad. This book concentrates on the techniques concerned with the detection and measurement of radioactivity. In order to appreciate the subject, law of decay of radioactivity, type of decay, interaction of radiation with matter are dealt with appropriately. It brings the difference between ionization counter, scintillation counter and solid state detector. Statistics of counting is enumerated and effort is made to make the reader aware that there is a difference between an ordinary chemical laboratory and a radiochemical one. At the end various possible problems related to counting are mentioned.

Prof. Maheshwar Sharon, after completing his graduation from India in 1960, went to England and obtained: Postgraduate Advance Diploma in Nuclear Power, from Strachclyde University, Glasgow (1962), Postgraduate Diploma (Radiochemistry), Leicester Polytechnic (1964) and Ph.D. from Leicester University (1967). At Manchester University and Bolton Institute of Technology, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow where he studied (n,ã) reactions using University Research Thermal Reactor at

Risely, UK. After a brief spell at Himachal and Pune Universities respectively, he joined as a Professor in Chemistry at IIT, Bombay, in 1978 and retired in 2003. There after he joined Birla College, Kalyan as an Adjunct Professor and started a Nanotechnology Research Center.

He was awarded Prof. Emeritus (CSIR) 2003-2005. He is now Prof. Emeritus awarded by UGC. He has been awarded the Man of the Year 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1996 by AB Inc, USA and is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, London (1965-2003). He has more than 150 research publications in National and International journals. He has many International research collaborations, namely with Japan, France and UK (with Prof. H. W. Kroto, FRS, Nobel Laureate).

Dr. Madhuri Sharon, a Ph.D. from University of Leicester (1969), she has more than four decades of teaching and research experience. She also worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Bolton Institute of Technology, UK and joined Bolton Technical College, UK, as a teaching faculty. After returning to India, she joined as CSIR Pool Officer and worked at Sabour Agricultural University and Central Potato Research Institute. She joined as a Lecturer in Botany, University of Pune in 1973, where apart from teaching Masters students she carried out research for 7 years. She has held senior positions in the Industries like Gufic (as a Vice-President) and Reliance Industries (as Director).

In 2004, she has started her own company Monad Nanotech Pvt. Ltd.; first Indian company to commercially produce Carbon Nano Materials. Moreover, she has joined as Adjunct Professor, Birla College, Kalyan, where she is guiding 10 students for Ph.D. She has more than 70 research publications in National and International journals; and has 7 patents to her credit.

Description: This graduate-level text develops the aspects of group theory most relevant to physics and chemistry (such as the theory of representations) and illustrates their applications to quantum mechanics. The first five chapters focus chiefly on the introduction of methods, illustrated by physical examples, and the final three chapters offer a systematic treatment of the quantum theory of atoms, molecules, and solids. The formal theory of finite groups and their representation is developed in Chapters 1 through 4 and illustrated by examples from the crystallographic point groups basic to solid-state and molecular theory. Chapter 5 is devoted to the theory of systems with full rotational symmetry, Chapter 6 to the systematic presentation of atomic structure, and Chapter 7 to molecular quantum mechanics.

Description: Group theoretical principles are an integral part of modern chemistry. Not only do they help account for a wide variety of chemical phenomena, they simplify quantum chemical calculations. Indeed, knowledge of their application to chemical problems is essential for students of chemistry. This complete, self-contained study, written for advanced undergraduate-level and graduate-level chemistry students, clearly and concisely introduces the subject of group theory and demonstrates its application to chemical problems.

To assist chemistry students with the mathematics involved, Professor Bishop has included the relevant mathematics in some detail in appendixes to each chapter. The book can then be read either as an introduction, dealing with general concepts (ignoring the appendixes), or a fairly comprehensive description of the subject (including the appendixes). In any case, the author assures students that "the mathematics involved in actually applying, as opposed to deriving, group theoretical formulae is quite trivial. It involves little more than adding and multiplying."
