    1. All bids to be per lot. They are executed free of chargeJ bythe Walpole Galleries and the items are 'bought at the lowest price

    permitted by competitive bids.

    2. The highest bidder to be the buyer; in case of disputed bids thelot shall be resold, but the Auctioneer will use hisi judgment as to

    the good faith of all claims and his decision will be final. He mayalso reject any fractional or nominal bid calculated to delay or

    injuriously affect the sale.

    3. Buyers to give their names and addresses and to make such cashpayments on account as may be required, in default of which the lotspurchased to he immediately resold.

    4. Goods bought to be removed at the close of the sale. If not

    so removed, they will be held at the risk of the purchaser and these

    Galleries will not be responsible if such goods are lost, stolen, dam-

    aged or destroyed. No deliveries will be made during the sale.

    5. Terms Cash. If accounts are not paid at the conclusion of the

    sale, or, in the case of absent buyers, when bills are rendered, these

    Galleries reserve the right to dispose of the goods wi’hout notice to

    the defaulting buyer and all costs of such re-sale will be charged to

    tlie defaulter. This condition is without prejudice to the rights of

    the Company to enforce the sale contract and collect the amount

    due without such re-sale at its own option.

    gon barrel, engraved frame. Fine Circassian walnut stock withraised rosette each side; cross-checked grips studded with smallsilver tacks. The hayonet is released hy pulling back on thetrigger guard. Extra fine condition.

    2. SPANISH CATALAN KNIFE. Length 20 inches with the bladeopen. Horn grips. Engraved brass mountings. Engravedblade. Fine condition.

    3. RARE PERCUSSION PISTOL. Lengtli 61^ inches. Round bar-rel. Rosewood grips. The nipple is on the axis of the barrel.A very rare type of pistol, made by Rupertus of Philadelphia,No. 37. Fine condition.

    64. SOUTH SEA ISLAND BATTLE-AXE. Length 22 inches. A largeoyster shell has been cut down for the head, which is bound tothe handle. Rare and unusual piece.

    79. XVII. CENTURY CROSSBOW. Length 29 inches. Very hand-some mottled walnut stock, raised cheek piece, double set trig-gers, brass trigger guard, peep sight. Steel bow. The iron loopon the muzzle engages the lever, which accompanies the cross-bow. Rarely found complete.

    80. HARPERS FERRY TAPE-LOCK MUSKET (1859). The scarceNavy model, fitted with sword bayonet, which is missing.

    81. RARE POACHER’S KENTUCKY FLINT-LOCK RIFLE. Lengtii51 inches. Full length very beautiful curly maple stock. 7 en-graved silver escutcheons ( one missing) . Brass mounted. Veryelaborate and large patch-box, prettily engraved. Raised cheekpiece with engraved silver ornament. Checked grip. The un-usual feature is that the barrel is a “take down” and the fore-stock is divided in front of the trigger guard so that the piececan be quickly taken apart and concealed on the person. Thestock has been split around the lock and crudely repaired bybrass plates. It is such a rare piece, however, that it wouldmore than pay to restore it, although it is not really neces-sary.

    85. RARE XVII. CENTURY JAPANESE MATCH-LOCK GUN.Length 44 inches. Heavy octagon barrel, with unusually largeflaring muzzle. Barrel hears Kiri crest indicating it belongedto the nobility. Besides this crest there are numerous dragonsand other ornamental designs in silver and gold bronze on thebarrel, also silver inlay on the match holder. A very desirableand genuine old piece showing nine proof marks.

    86. SHARP S PERCUSSION BREECH-LOADING BUFFALO RIFLE.25-inch heavy octagon barrel, calibre .38. Double set triggers,iron patch-box. One of the early models of this celebrated rifle.

    87. EARLY ELINT-LOCK BRASS BARRELLED BLUNDER-BUS.Length 30 inches. Cannon barrel, with l*/^-inch bell muzzle.Very old piece, probably made before 1700. Wood split in twoplaces on the forestock and part of back strap on hammerbroken, but, considering its age, it is in good order and com-plete.

    88. MOORISH MIGUELET LOCK HORSEMAN’S GUN. Length 68inches. The barrel is held to the stock by nine embossed brasscapucines. Crutch-shaped stock. Eitted with a genuine migue-let lock not often found, and a very old piece, yet well pre-served.

    89. BRIDESBURG U. S. MUSKET, with Milbank’s alteration tobreech-loader. A rare piece. Bayonet missing.

    90. VOLCANIC MAGAZINE RIFLE. 25-inch barrel. Patent of 1854,and forerunner of the Winchester rifle. Very scarce.

    91. RAJPOOT KATAR. Length 16 inches.

    93. INDIAN BEIHEADING SWORD. Length 21^ inches. The bladeis engraved each side at the end in floral design, and the hackhas half-inch engraved border each side. The left side at thebase shows 3l4*inch figure of a king, while the right side has arelief silver figure of a warrior. The grip is covered with raisedcarving. On the blade are 17 copper inserts. An extra nicepiece.

This piece dates back to about 1842 and received itsname from a knife made from a file by Resin P. Bowie antiused by his brother. Colonel James Bowie, in a duel nearNatchez, Miss. Wooden trigger guardwith silver brace. The woodwork around the tang is also nicelycarved in relief, and the two side plates are of silver in fancydesign. There is also a fancy silver comb plate and silver butt.This has been altered from flint-lock and it now has a dolphinhammer and a fluted lug. The piece shows the highest qualityof workmanship, and is of graceful design.

The top of the barrel has a raised rib with doublefluting. The muzzle cap is of silver, engraved, and also carvedin relief. The two thimbles are of fancy design and are silver.The rear one is carved to represent a grotesque man’s head.The trigger guard is of silver, hand chiseled, with engravedacorn. The stock is of very fine highly polished mottled walnut,there is exquisite floral carving ahead of the trigger guard, eachside of which is checked in panel. The carving around thecomb is also exquisite, and the carving extends well down thestock. The side plate is silver, also engraved. There is a very-pretty silver name plate engraved in fancy design surmountedby a crown. The butt cap is of solid silver, very heavy, and thefinial shows a lion’s head in relief. A very beautiful pistol, inperfect condition except that a small piece of wood is chippedout side of the stock near the butt cap. One of the finest pis-tols that has passed through our hands.

The stock is split on the right sidein places and the ramrod is missing, but it is sufficiently wellpreserved to he a valuable addition to any collection.

The lower part of thestock from the butt and for 18 inches ahead of the trigger guardis ornamented with brass partly engraved and partly pierced.This ornamentation on the top and the lower butt is engravedin pierced design, and there is a heavy engraved brass cap onthe butt. The lock is out of order hut the piece is in goodcondition considering its age.

The stock is cov-ered with mother-of-pearl inlay of various designs, and betweenthe inlay are brass bands, one of which is imperfect. There isalso an embossed brass sleeve at the butt. A genuine and un-visual old piece.

    189. ALGERIAN MIGUELET LOCK HORSEMAN’S GUN. Length 58inches. Slender octagon barrel held to the stock by five en-graved brass capucines. The forestock is of metal nicely en-graved. The breech is also engraved in various designs. Pol-ished stock with some pearl ornamentation, one or two piecesof which are missing. A very old piece, in good condition, ex-cept that the ramrod is missing and there is slight wear aroundthe lock.

    190. RARE ALGERIAN MIGUELET LOCK HORSEMAN’S GUN.Length 54 inches. Slender steel barrel, octagon at the breechfor 18 inches, held to the stock by three engraved brass capu-cins. The forestock is of iron. This is a very early gun as thelock is of the crudest design. The stock is set with numerouspieces of pearl in pierced design. The ramrod is missing, other-wise the piece is in extra good condition and probably dates backthree hundred years, and has extreme interest on account of itsantiquity.

    201. HAWKEN PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE. 40-inch octagonbarrel, calibre about .40. Plain walnut stock, brass mounted.The barrel is marked “S. Hawken.” There is a slight split onthe comb, otherwise the rifle is in very good condition. This isprobably one of the most famous rifles that has ever passedthrough our hands. Samuel T. Hawken, familiarly known as“Old Man Hawken,” was horn of Pennsylvania-Dutch stock inHagerstown, Md., in 1792, and was a soldier in the War of 1812,and after his return began to practice trade as a gunsmith. In1822 he moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he started making thesecelebrated rifles which had a great deal to do with the earlysettlement of the west. He made rifles for all the early furtraders, among them General William Ashley, who once killeda buffalo with a Hawken rifle at 300 rods. Every rifle was madeby hand and sold at the one price—$25. He continued thebusiness until 1859, when he sold out. Although this is a plainrifle, they are now exceedingly rare—particularly in the east

    and this is the only one that has ever passed through our hands.

    308. PAIR ROUND BR4SS BREAST PLATE ORNAMENTS. Diam.5 ins. Relief design in hands and centre medallion of formalfloral pattern. A ring on the edge of one and a hook on theother give the necessary play for use; there have apparentlybeen iron flat straps across inside with brass nails, but these aremissing.

    311. JAPANESE LONG SWORD. L. 32. A good sword hut the scab-hard of lacquer with red Cherry crests has been abused; the hiltcap is missing, but the piece is worth consideration on account ofthe beauty of the carving of the band of ivory in horses (very tinyyet perfect)

    ;gourds, lattice, etc.; and the unusually fine menuki

    which are of shibuichi and shakudo.
