Ancient India Architecture (Temples) By: Simran Dhaliwal Ancient India had many interesting temples. The temples were made of many different materials, had many sculptures and styles. First of all, ancient Indian temples were made of many different materials. Buddhist temples were carved on the side of cliffs, so they were taking away stone instead of building with stone. It was easier to take away stone. In the Guptan Empire architects began to build with stone. These were mainly Hindu temples. Also India had many sculptures carved on/in the temples. Each part of India had different types of sculptures on the temples. In central India the sculptures were known for the amazing craftsmanship and the complex design. In Northern India the sculptures are images of gods and goddesses, chunky flora, and beautifully carved gateways. In Southern India the outside was basically covered in sculptures.
