People have lived in Italy for a long time, because Italy is a very fertile peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea.

The site of Rome had lots of natural advantages: it was possible to cross the river and it was near the sea.

This is the Roman Empire.

Rome was born around 7 hills by the River Tiber, in the Italic Peninsula.

Rome was a city of big contrasts. Lower class Romans or plebeians lived in apartments

(dirty, badly built and full of peolple) . Rich citizens or patricians lived in the domus

(a courtyard, a kitchen, a bathroom and a study).

The family was an important part of Roman life.Most Roman families had slaves.

Boys and girls went to schools called ludus and,only boys continued their education in grammaticus or secondary school.

•Roman diet in general was based mostly on vegetables, cereals and simple meats.

•The patricians had very elaborate dinners.

•In the Coliseum, the Romans gathered to watch bloody combats between gladiators and battles of men and wild animals.

Men wore a toga and women wore a large dress called a stola.

Looking good was important for the Romans. Fashion was influenced by what the Emperor and his wife liked.

Men had simple short haircuts but women had more elaborated hairstyles

•Most Roman medicines were made from herbs and plants.

•Doctors examined patients and prescribed medicines, exercise and a healthy diet. •Surgeons were trained in the

army.

Dentists extracted teeth and put false ones made of bones or ivory.

The Romans were particularly interested in painting and sculpture.They loved to decorate their buildings with paintings (frescoes), mosaics and sculptures .

The Romans were also great builders: Roman aqueducts, amphitheatres, bridges,…

The Roman language was Latin. It is the mother of many European modern languages .

The Roman numerals are based on letters

Travel was vital for the Roman Empire.

Every corner was linked by roads to the city of Rome.

As the old saying says “All roads lead to Rome”.
