THE ROMAN ARMY
The most powerful and organised army because:
- Strict discipline.- Tactics.- Structure.
Until 1st century B.C.: all citizens (17-60 years old) had to serve in the army.
In the 1st century B.C. (MARIUS) the army became professional: 20-25 years of service in exchange of a salary (stipendium) + loot. Veretans received a plot of lands and the Roman citizenship.
Organised in LEGIONS (4.200 to 6.000 men. There were 30 legions during the Empire.

Un legionario y sus armas
ANTERIORANTERIOR
• Llevaba 35 o 40 kg.• Escudo (scutum), rectangular y
algo curvado. Hecho sobre una plancha de madera, forrado con piel y remachado.
• Casco (galea). Protegía la cabeza y la nuca. En bronce y hierro.
• Coraza (lorica). Cota de malla armadura de placas (lorica segmentata).
• Espada (gladius). Variadas, pero destaca la gladius hispaniensis, de 80 cm y doble filo.
• Jabalina (pilum). Lanza arrojadiza, en madera y hierro. Se rompía tras impactar. Alcance de 30 m.
• Coquilla (cingulum). Protección de la zona pélvica.
• Sandalias (caligae). Con una suela muy resistente y claveteada.
• Útiles de campaña (sarcinae). Cada legionario llevaba: hoz, cazo, marmita, hacha, pala, ración de grano para tres días.
• Podían caminar 20 km al día.

CRISIS DEL SIGLO III
(235 - 284)
Periodo de dificultades económicas, sociales, políticas y militares.
Disminución del comercio. Revueltas campesinas. Rebeliones militares. Debilidad de las fronteras del imperio. Abandono de las ciudades.
Los germanos invadieron la frontera imperial del Rin y el Danubio.
Los persas presionaron sobre la frontera este.
Saqueo de las ciudades.
BAJO IMPERIO(284 - 476)
Época de reformas para superar los problemas del imperio.
Economía autosuficiente. Disminución de los ingresos
del Estado. Excesivo tamaño del imperio.
Diocleciano (reformó la organización del imperio y persiguió al cristianismo).
Constantino (legalizó el cristianismo y trasladó la capital imperial a Constantinopla).
Teodosio (prohibió las religiones paganas y dividió el imperio a su muerte).
375. La presión de los hunos provocó la invasión de los pueblos germanos.
395. División del imperio: imperio romano, con capital en Roma, e imperio bizantino, con capital en Constantinopla.
476. Es depuesto el último emperador romano, Rómulo Augústulo.
