• Started in what is today known as Italy– Separated into East and West by the Apennine

Mountain Range– 3 Regions, Eturia (North), Latium (Rome), and

Campania (South, coastal line)• Expansion grew both North, South, East, and

West– At first, surrounded by enemies• Next two hundred years, battles constantly

Conquest

• Roman Citizen– Mainly given to the Latin’s – Conquered communities were allowed to continue

living how they always did with one exception: Provide Soliders!

– Loyal allies could improve their status and become Roman citizens

– This was huge!!!! Allowed the conquered peoples to feel that they had a stake in Rome’s success
