What’s on offer?Studying at UWA, means that you have the option totake a minor or units that may complement your major,suit your career goals or simply be of personal interest.

UWA's Conservatorium of Music offers a number ofstimulating and enjoyable units that accrue credit towardyour degree. Whether or not you have studied music atsecondary level, or can read music, you can enrich yourdegree by including music units in your study plan.

Music minors and elective unitsChoose a four unit minor in Musicology, Applied Musicor Electronic Music or take individual units of music,including practical ensembles. You can choose frommany areas (e.g. musicology, electronic music, chamberensembles) including practical music ensembles forbeginners (ukulele, percussion, a diversity of choirs).

Gain a unique global perspective on music as a socialand cultural phenomenon in MUSC1350 Popular Musicin Global Perspectives; or explore the significant rolesplayed by women in all aspects of music throughouthistory in MUSC1351 Women in Music; or learn abouthow music constructs and contests notions of identity,community, ethnicity, gender, race and tradition andhistory in MUSC2350 Music in World Cultures, includinghands-on experience in a world music ensemble.

Students studying other majors can enrol in Music unitsas electives.

Our wide range of music units includes topics inMusicology (History, Culture and Contexts), MusicLanguage (Harmony and Aural) and Electronic Music.

Music ensemble unitsOur Music Ensemble units have been specially designedto give you the opportunity to play in music ensembles,whatever your skill level. There are four different MusicEnsemble units. Within these units, you can enrol in anumber of different ensemble options depending ontheir ability and experience.

‘The music ensemble units work to enhance anddevelop people coming from a variety of levels.Broadway Choir and percussion ensemble havemade me more confident in performance,enhanced my rhythm and technique andchallenged me to go out of my comfort zone withpercussion solos and beatboxing. I would do itevery semester if I could!’ – Chloe

Ensembles for experienced musiciansBy enrolling in one of our advanced ensembles,experienced performers can continue their musicaljourney whether or not they are taking a major in music.Advanced ensembles provide the opportunity toperform celebrated repertoire with other talentedmusicians.

Advanced ensembles may include:
