HAPPENINGS IN THE WORLD OF FORTIS
My dear Fortisians,It is a pleasure to connect with you through another issue of ‘The Fortisian.’ At the very outset, l would like to extend my heartiest good wishes on the occasions of Holi and Easter to you and your families. We are on a journey at Fortis Healthcare and patients are at the centre of all that we do. They are the sole reason of our existence and it is our sacred duty and responsibility to provide the best care we can to all of them. Our endeavour must be to delight the patients and their attendants through uncompromising services, with the very intent of surpassing all their expectations. We must be recognised and known for our unobtrusive services delivered with empathy as much as our clinical excellence.Patient care, therefore, should become the goal of everyone in our organisation. Each one of us must make an effort to sharpen the focus on patients and think of how we can serve them better. Our communication and interaction with the patients, engagement with their families and our ability to efficiently manage patient processes are integral to achieve patient delight and we must excel in these areas.A focus on patients also means that we should be able to operate at the peak of our professional abilities. We must be willing to stretch ourselves for the sake of our patients and be the best in whatever we do.As we commence a new financial year, I would like each one of us to resolve that we will contribute to make Fortis a name to reckon in terms of patient care and service delivery.Warm regards, Bhavdeep Singh

A team of doctors at Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bengaluru, under the leadership of Dr Vivek Jawali, Chairman, Department of Cardio-Vascular Science, conducted a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a rare procedure, giving a new lease of life to an 87-year old patient. The procedure is a relatively new technique and is used to treat high-risk patients suffering from severe heart conditions. It is especially suitable for the elderly, for whom conventional surgery is risky. The procedure offers the benefit of a shorter post-operative stay as opposed to a conventional procedure. Only a few centres in India are capable of conducting the operation.

3D printing was used yet again by a team led by Dr Vijay Agarwal, Chief of Paediatric Surgery, and Dr Swati Garekar, Paediatric Cardiologist, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, to meticulously plan a rare surgery, the Nikaidoh Operation. Very few centres around the world are capable of performing the operation, which was conducted under the auspices of the Fortis Child Heart Mission. The procedure was used to treat a 5-year old girl’s complicated congenital heart defects. Fortis Mulund became the first hospital in India to use 3D technology to plan a heart surgery in 2015.
The patient, the daughter of a fisherman, was suffering from Multiple Serious Congenital Cardiac Abnormalities. The doctors obtained a CT scan of her heart and then had a 3 dimensional heart model printed from it. The model gave the team a good idea of what to expect on the operating table. They were able to plan out the surgery with greater confidence.

An 86-year old lady who was wheelchair bound for over three years, was able to walk again after a team of doctors led by Dr Ashok Dhar, Senior Consultant - Orthopaedics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, conducted a Total (Bilateral) Knee Replacement surgery. The patient was suffering from severe Osteoarthritis and deformed knees. Dr S Radhakrishnan and Dr Anupama Nair conduct 6-month study on Foetal Cardiology at Fortis Escorts, New Delhi
A study conducted by Dr S Radhakrishnan - Director, Paediatric & Foetal Cardiology, and Dr Anupama Nair, Associate Consultant, Paediatric & Foetal Cardiology has concluded that the mean gestational age of those detected to have coronary heart disease is 27 weeks, which is late. Ideally, detection should be between 16-20 weeks of pregnancy so that necessary decisions can be planned. When foetal cardiac defect is detected, the mother and baby need special care. The delivery should be carried out at a highly specialised centre with utmost care. The 6-month study was conducted on 201 consecutive patients referred for foetal echo by their respective doctors. Dr Radhakrishan is a leading name in Paediatric Cardiology. In his career spanning 28 years, he has done more than 5,000 echocardiographies, more than 3,000 cardiac catheterisations, and innumerable balloon valvuloplasties in children. Dr Anupma Nair is specially trained in Foetal Echocardiology at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, UK.

Message from the CEO – Launch of Project Dear Fortisians,As we move towards becoming a purpose-led organisation, it has become imperative that we must continue to strengthen our processes to create a standardised and replicable operations platform. We began by implementing Project F1, wherein we automated and standardised the back-end IT core of our company. Now we are ready to launch Project One Fortis, which will standardise the front-end, customer facing IT and service infrastructure across Fortis. The healthcare industry is witnessing a strong emphasis on patient care and clinical outcomes. Streamlining processes, while optimising operational costs is the need of the hour. To give this idea appropriate shape, we are building a strong and robust enterprise-wide Hospital Information System (HIS) - that will take an integrated view of all clinical, administrative and financial aspects in a hospital. These must be effectively and comprehensively managed to deliver distinctive patient care. A powerful and agile HIS will help us leverage industry best practices while delivering high-quality results, with great consistency. This initiative has been branded ‘One Fortis’ and is being led by Mr Ashish Bhatia, with support from an experienced and outstanding team consisting Col Harinder Chehal, Dr Bishnu Panigrahi, Mr Jasbir Grewal, Mr Rakesh Laddha and Mr Veneeth Purushotaman. At the project level, a core cross-functional team has been assigned to work with our implementation partner, ‘Healthfore Technologies Limited’. The project is expected to be completed in 27 months and commissioned in phases.I am excited to be a part of this journey and believe that this initiative is one of our most ambitious future readiness programmes. As the key to the success of this project lies in its seamless adoption, I look forward to the support in your respective roles you play and the location you are in, to ensure the success of ‘One Fortis’. Thank you in advance for your support and commitment. Best, Bhavdeep Singh.

Meet Dr R Muralidharan, Endocrinologist at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, a man who has a way with wordsHow did you get into writing poetry and since when have you been writing?Words have always fascinated me. Weaving words with elegance to create a rich fabric of poetry appealed to me. I wrote my first poem in Tamil (my mother tongue) when I was 14 and have been writing ever since.
How many poems have you written so far? Have you published any of these? I must have written about 50-60 poems in Tamil and 40-50 poems in English. Many have been published in my college magazine. I intend to compile them into a book once I find
some time!
What inspires you to write and what are your favourite themes? Any creation of Nature fascinates me but the inspiration to write comes mostly from my feelings for people and happenings in the world around us.
What does it take to be a poet and who are your favourite poets? To write poetry, you need sensitivity and a keen eye to observe the world around you. I have several favourites. To name a few – the great Tamil poet Subrahmanya Bharathi, Wordsworth, Keats, Tagore and Mirza Ghalib. Among the present writers, l like Gulzar and Javed Akhtar.Tell us about your family? My wife, Dr Jayashree, is a Professor of Paediatrics at PGI Chandigarh. I am blessed with two daughters. The elder one, Shruti,
is a 3rd year medical student of the Chandigarh Medical College and the younger, Shraddha, is completing her class 10.
What would you like to share with our readers? Interest in literature and fine arts is important for everyone. I strongly believe poetry has the power to instill in us sensitivity and tender human emotions. Poetry can transcend all barriers and make the world a better place.
