THE RECTORY April 2020
What strange, uncertain and frightening times we are living in. Never would it have been expected that, with the directions of the Government, Archbishops and Bishops, in all our interests, all public worship must be suspended, and our Churches are now closed. I was away when the news first came to suspend all public worship. In touch by phone I found all directions had been listened to and help already being organised for those who should not go out. Whilst away I watched some feel good DVDs with my friends. They were Downton Abbey, Fisherman’s' Friends and Finding your Feet. All three lift the human spirit as have the actions of so many villagers. This ties in with the actions of the Marston Magna Parish Council who have been so proactive with others to get a network going to provide help for those who need it in whatever way. Please turn to the back page of this newsletter and respond if you are able to do so. Already in our village’s neighbours have been offering help. Please do not forget the food bank, the need for these to be supplied is something we can do. Food can no longer be left in our churches but when you have to go shopping, I hope the supermarkets will continue to have trolley's for food banks. Remember there is no need to panic buy for ourselves. There is enough to go around if we share. Rimpton also are anxious to make sure everyone in the village has the help they need. Please read about this in Sam Woodhouse’s article in the Newsletter. If you are a Face Book user there is a village group for Marston Magna. I will say Morning Prayer each day at home at 9 am and Evening Prayer at 6 pm. I will also light a candle at 7 pm in my window at home every day. Everyone in the villages will be being thought of. Rev'd Jeremy Swaine from Rimpton has suggested that we stop for a few minutes reflection at 12 noon and another excellent idea is to say the Lord's Prayer up to “deliver us from evil,” every time you wash your hands instead of “Happy Birthday”. With many of us enforced to be at home please feel you can ring me if you would just like to talk or need any kind of help possible to give me a ring on 850745 Only once before in my life have, I not been to services over Easter. I went to Egypt during Holy Week. I did find it strange but had taken my Book of Common Prayer, the old prayer book, as it is so small for travel and in those days, I could read small print without glasses! I read the services and readings each day on my own. I will find myself doing the same this year but with different more modern -but heavy -books. I should be better with technology and where everything is accessible from the phone! Revd. Barbara 01935 850745

Letter from the Right Reverend Ruth Worsley, Bishop of Taunton For Parish Newsletters – April 2020 Time to show our care for all As we reflect on the Easter story this month I’m reminded of the sense of ‘touch’. It was Passover, a religious festival, and as Jesus was laid in the tomb, Sabbath was upon them. So, the usual burial rites were not attended to by the women who were closest to Jesus. It would have been improper to touch the dead body. Hence their early arrival on that resurrection morning. In the following days, in attempts to dispel disbelief, Jesus’ followers had opportunity to not only talk with him, eat with him, but also touch him as he came among them. Thomas’s doubt was dispelled as he was invited to place his hand in the wounds of Christ.’ As I write this, we are wondering what Covid 19 might have in store for us in the UK. We hear now that Italy has taken drastic action in hoping to contain the virus. I don’t know what further precautions we in the UK may have taken by the time you read this. Currently we are all taking greater care with our personal hygiene in washing hands and ensuring we use and bin tissues. Today, along with the rest of the Church of England, we in Bath and Wells, have recommended that we only receive bread or wafers at Holy Communion and refrain from touching, through blessing, sharing the Peace or prayer through laying on of hands. There will be various responses to the concerns raised by the Government and the media. Some may feel anxiety or fear about the nature of the virus whilst others may wonder if the emergency planning appears over-reactive. Our response as a Church must be that we do what we can to ensure we stay safe by taking all precautions recommended. And that we do all we can to reassure people who may feel vulnerable and worried by staying calm and showing compassion and care for all. But how do we express such care? I’ve realised that touch plays quite an important part in showing we care for someone. When I was training as a nurse for a brief period many years ago, I recall being shown some research on touch. It was an eye-opener! Even the briefest of touches can cause people to feel better, cared for and happier. But the presence of Coronavirus means that we are having to withdraw touch to prevent the
possibility of infection. So how might we try to replace touch with other signals of our care and value? What might that look like? As folk may find themselves ‘self-isolating’ due to potential symptoms of the virus we have the opportunity to find new ways to show our care. Phone calls and cards, food deliveries, creative use of social media and streaming of worship services may all be ways to stay in touch and help people to know they are not alone. Rather than finding ourselves paralysed by the situation let us discover how we can create new opportunities to strengthen our relationships and communities. May our actions be the reassuring, life-affirming ‘touch’ of the risen Christ this Easter! Easter blessings The Right Revd. Ruth Worsley + Bishop of Taunton
THE RAIN REPORT The first 8 days of February saw very little rain. During the remaining 21 days, there were only 2 dry days and considerable heavy rain. The February rainfall totalled 141 mms (5 ½ inches), well over double the February average of 58 mms (2 ¼ inches). It could have been worse with the Met Office reporting that the UK average for February was 209 mms (8 ¼ inches), and the wettest on record. But not the wettest on record for Rimpton, where during February 2014, I recorded 148mms (6 inches). 2014, you will probably remember was the year of the massive flooding on the Somerset Levels. The driest February I have recorded was 1993 with 5.5 mms (1/4 inch), and close behind 1998 with 7 mms.

Online and Virtual Church Services Just because no one can worship with others does not mean worship cannot take place. St John's Yeovil are streaming their service at 10.30 am each Sunday morning, access is through their website www.sjyeovil.co.uk The BBC on Long Wave or DAB have a daily service at 9.45 am on weekdays. There is also a service every Sunday on Radio 4 at 8 am which I usually listen to before going to Church .I will not have to rush off for the near future although I will
6
be in Church at 9.30 am on Sundays to offer worship on behalf of others and to pray for all. There is also a televised service on Sundays at 11.45 -12.15. “Thought for the Day” is at 7.50 am and Songs of Praise on BBC1 on Sunday afternoons. There are various apps for smart phones such as Common Worship Daily Prayer, Sacred Space and Pray As You Go, all of which can be downloaded from Google. If you go to the Church of England website www.churchofengland.org/ you can sign up for a daily hashtag Live Lent email, which will give you daily reading and reflection. Wells Cathedral will hopefully remain open for personal prayer and reflection, the lighting of candles and pastoral care. The Cathedral will also be live streaming. On Mothering Sunday, you may have seen some lighted candles in windows at 7 pm. What about continuing this on each Sunday the crisis lasts? It can be a time of prayer to remember those who are sick and anxious, all involved in our Health and Emergency services, our Government and for each other. Just because there will be no Church Services, Easter Day still happened. Jesus still rose from the dead .I always remember in the days of the Cold War when no worship was officially allowed in the Soviet Union, an Orthodox priest bravely said at some huge gathering “ Christ is risen” and everyone responding “He is risen indeed. Alleluia.” The people had not forgotten. With every blessing Revd. Barbara

MARSTON MAGNA AND RIMPTON GARDENING CLUB
The next meeting due to take place on 7th April has been postponed. This is obviously due to the closing of Castle Gardens.
As soon as they reopen, we will arrange an event there and hopefully all will receive a 25% off discount voucher, valid for all their stock! I have the plug plants now for the Garden Show. They are 50p each. You can get them from me at Stable Cottage or I can get them to you, if you give me a call. Please do not leave them all with me to pot on!! Keep well. News from your Village Agent Team
Easter! A time for short spring breaks, chocolate
and hot cross buns! This is easily my favourite
time of year as the sun begins to warm your back
and the countryside becomes a little more
accessible again as the mud dries out.
It is important to notice the seasons as life can be
such a rush or can become very monotonous
unless we take the time to mark special days and
times – and this doesn’t have to mean spending
lots of money!
Here’s a few suggestions to get you out and about
this April:
• Take a trip to church to take time to wonder at
the beauty of the building and share in joint
worship. If you find it hard to get there alone, call
the church numbers listed in your parish magazine
to ask for support.
• Try a health walk to lift your spirits with good
company. Ask at your local surgery or try
https://www.southsomerset.gov.uk/media/2861/st
ep-out-and-join-our-health-walks-
181219.pdf There are many across Somerset
varied to suit to your ability to walk.
• Take a walk across the footpaths that cross-
National Trust properties so you can soak up the
beautiful landscapes without paying to enter. Don’t
forget it is possible to hire wheelchairs and some
places have accessibility vehicles you can borrow
at the property.

• Join the community transport scheme if you are
not able to drive to get out and about:
https://www.travelsomerset.co.uk/community-
transport-services/
• Look online for children’s events. Facebook
has some excellent pages such as What’s On
Somerset, Things to do with Kids in Somerset and
Mendip Rocks.
• Activity Village has lots of Easter Crafts to print
and the Short Breaks scheme is available if you
have a child with a disability.
https://choices.somerset.gov.uk/025/social-
care/childrens-short-breaks/
• BBC Radio Somerset or the Somerset Live
website has up to date event information.
• There are often local Easter markets or Bingos
that you can visit to get the feeling of celebrating
Spring, look in your parish magazine or website.
• Join your local village coffee morning or one of
our Talking
Café’s. www.somersetagents.org/talking-cafes/
• A little further afield, Frome and Shepton Mallet
are doing a Window Wonderland where residents
have created Art in their windows for people to
discover.
If you are home alone and find it hard to access
the outside world, give your local CCS Village
Agent a call and we will work on solutions to
support you in getting out and about, perhaps
finding a volunteer to support you to get to a local
event or to regular social groups and lunches. Find
your local agent at www.somersetagents.org/find-

I received the letter below and thought it would be a good idea to share with our parishioners so that they can be aware of this new scam. “I live in Montacute (got your details from the Montacute magazine) and this morning received a call re a free inspection of my loft insulation as they had a surveyor in the area. They would come in have a look in the loft do an inspection and let us know if any further work was needed as there have been reported issues in our area. Our house has had work on it but I (didn’t say out loud) wasn’t aware we had the insulation changed and we haven’t, but he had our details from a database (think he said energy efficiency). His manner or what he was saying didn’t ring true, so I pushed for some details and he gave a website and a telephone number.
He said the surveyor would carry ID and I could have a friend in the house if that made me feel easier. I said I didn’t like that fact I have received notification by letter and nothing he was saying was plausible he wasn’t prepared to leave surname and I said I didn’t believe the inspection wasn’t a ruse whilst they cased my house and disconnected. I have looked at the website number is different and not in service, as were both the number he phoned on and the number he gave for head office unobtainable. My husband contacted the police and they
directed him to a website but he couldn’t make
that work so thought you may have a contact you
can use to alert His name was Joe He phoned on
01823 530284 said main office was 01823 530073
and the website was www.home2sense.co.uk
which works till you try contact number which is a
033 number Hope this is useful to you or someone
that you know that might be able to use this info.”
Just be very careful when telephoned or contacted
“out of the blue”.

Lord’s Larder Update for April 2020 Thank you everyone who has donated food items to the Lord’s Larder Food Bank so far this year, giving the food bank items such as sugar, tins of baked beans, and tins of potato. Those items helped to complete the 164 parcels that went out to help those in need just for the month of February to help feed 407 people, thank you. If you would like to give to the Lord’s Larder this month and would like to know what we are currently running short of, we are currently running short of :- Tins of Beans and Sausages Tins of Ravioli Tins of Curry Tins of Sweetcorn Tins of Potato Tins of Tomatoes Food Carrier Bags These and all other in date, long life food items would all be gratefully received. Many, many thanks for your continued support, Mat Callaghan Yeovil Christian Support Trust Operations Manager
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP US?
We are always looking for volunteers to join our “Friends of Marston Magna Village Hall” group. This is so that we can call on people to help with tasks, like baking cakes, helping at a function in aid of the hall, manning a stand, or just generally helping us. There is no need to become a committee member. Anyone interested should contact Karen Price by phone or email please, or any member of the committee. Karen Price (Chairperson) Telephone 01935 851336
MILK BOTTLETOPS Can you all please remember to remove the foil pull caps from the tops, because the metal detector on Perry’s conveyor belt stop the machines. Also remember it is only plastic tops with a 2 or 4 in the recycling symbol that I can accept, all the rest go in my wheelie bin. There is a company called Massmould, who produce tops made from the same plastic as milk bottle tops e.g. Robinson’s squash, and Evian
water, so from now on, I can accept any tops made by Massmoulds. Please do continue to save the bottle tops and as soon as the Café re-opens we can start to gather them together. Thank you everyone. And keep safe Marion Dean, 13 West End, 01935 850032
Fir Villa Parish News, April 2020 Oh, my goodness, what a time we find ourselves in, we hope everyone is keeping safe and well, and all our thoughts go out to people in our community and further afield who are struggling at the moment. We miss you! We sadly made the decision to limit access to the home to staff and medical professionals only to reduce the footfall through the door, and therefore reduce the risk of the virus coming in a couple of weeks ago. It wasn’t a decision made lightly and to restrict family and friends makes us very sad, however we have been adjusting to this and finding ways of still keeping the communication going, so there is a lot of Skype, phone calls and some families sitting outside the windows so they can still see their loved ones. We have also started using an app called Familigram where people can send in pictures and messages from their phones, the Residents have loved these, especially on Mother’s Day. The local preschool we have links with have been sending in their messages and photos, so that we can still see the children. If you want to send in messages you are more than welcome. Even though we are not going out into our community we are still having fun within the home and essentially it is business as usual as it is important that our Residents feel safe and secure. We are taking all the precautions to keep them safe and we have contingency’s in place should the situation change. So, there is no Community Lunch, and of course there will be no Holy Communion. We would just like to say thank you for your support. Please keep yourselves safe.
With kind regards

MOBILE HAIRDRESSING
Grace Isbell from Mudford Sock operates a mobile hairdressing business in normal times. Unfortunately, the government has decided that hairdressers should cease work as from 23rd March, as it is impossible to keep a reasonable social distance and cut or style hair. As soon as the current restrictions are lifted do contact Grace on her mobile 07738 636489 or by email [email protected] or her home number is 01935 410800. Grace would also be very happy to visit you in your home in the future which would save a journey to Yeovil or Sherborne. Or you can visit her salon in her home. Normal business will be resumed soon. We hope. Keep safe everybody. What birds are you seeing in Rimpton? Thanks for the responses to the ‘bird watch’ piece in March’s magazine. Ideas emerged about ways of sharing information about the birds we see, also the idea of finding someone who is a ‘bird expert’ to lead us on a guided walk locally, to help us identify species we may not have noticed before. We wondered if residents from the other parishes might also be interested in this. Please do be in touch if so. It would be great to make this a parish-wide venture. If there happen to be any ‘bird experts’ in the Parish (bird spotters tend to be unnecessarily modest!) please be in touch! Otherwise I’ll contact Somerset Wildlife Trust to see if they can recommend someone. But until then, spring has sprung! It’s not just the daffodils, glorious though those are, or the blackthorn blossom peeping its way through the hedgerows. The big news is that I heard a Chiffchaff this week! It’s one of our earliest summer migrants to arrive back in the UK and heralds the spring. It’s an exciting time in the birdwatching calendar as our summer migrants return. I heard it for the first time this year on my way to Marston Magna, near the railway bridge – it sounds like its name – “chiff-chaff-chiff-chaff”, very rhythmic, even, and loud. It’s sometimes confused with the Great Tit which also has a two-syllable song, but the Great Tit puts the emphasis on the first syllable, so it sounds like “TEA-cher TEA-cher” – or like a squeaky wheelbarrow. The Great Tit is resident all year, but Chiffchaffs mostly over-winter in the Mediterranean, north Africa, or occasionally south of the Sahara. It’s great to have them back. I also heard a Blackcap yesterday, in our garden. In the south of England, they are mainly resident but this
one started to sing now – a gloriously fulsome, flute-y melodious song which quite startled me as I gardened. If you’ve got this far in reading this, you might be interested to find out where ‘our’ Cuckoos are right now … the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) runs a project which satellite-tags some Cuckoos and tracks where and when they fly. Visit www.bto.org/our-science/projects/cuckoo-tracking-project Scroll down and activate the animated map to see where these Cuckoos travelled since last May. Fascinating! When they left us, some stayed in Europe, but a few ventured right down nearly to Angola. In January they made a huge U-turn and turned north again and are gradually returning to us. You can follow their progress through the spring in real time. Sam Woodhouse [email protected] 078 123 95912 Marston Magna Bowls is now cancelled until further notice. THE MARSTON INN The Marston Inn, along with all Public Houses and Restaurants in the area are now closed, by order of HM Government. We wish everyone the very best of health and look forward to seeing you all after this crisis has ended. Many thanks from Jo Andrews Telephone 01935 850587 CURRENT SCAMS!! no such initiatives. If anyone knocks on your door ignore them and call the police on 999. They are trying to take advantage of vulnerable people. There have been similar reports of people saying they are from the Red Cross. Best wishes, and keep safe Revd. Barbara Neighbourhood Network - don’t forget! As covered in previously a few of us villagers have got together to offer help to both MM and Rimpton villagers, as and when needed. As someone who has an 89 year old father on his own in Hertfordshire, I know he doesn’t always feel well enough, for example, to go food shopping, go to appointments, collect tablets, take his dustbin down the drive etc, but he always welcomes visitors for a chat and a cuppa. So, it must be the case too in our two villages, perhaps more now than ever. The Rimpton Community During these last two wet, dull months I have been reflecting on how lucky we all are to be part of the Rimpton family. We have had several very sad deaths, a lot of flood water, grey skies and too much talk of Brexit, global warming and the Coronavirus, but so many blessings too - an extraordinary community of selfless people who run our church, (no names, but a special thank you to Reverend Barbara and Tony Green), our village hall, and those who volunteer year after year to be on fete and harvest supper committees, who keep an eye on the elderly and above all, seem pleased to see each other whenever we meet. We may no longer have a shop or a pub at our centre, but news - not gossip! - is passed around with much kindness and those of us who go out for a walk each day will almost certainly bump into someone who will make them feel glad that we live in this lovely, peaceful, thoughtful and caring place.
Message to Rimpton from the First Responders team
As you are aware due to Covid 19 the government have advised that we must keep to "Social Distancing", this instruction obviously impacts the role of first responders. As a result, we will not be able to carry out our normal call out procedure until advised otherwise. We will obviously inform you when the situation changes, until then please dial 999 in any emergency as your first course of action. The defibrillator situated in the Telephone box is available for personal use if needed and any of our first responders can be called for advice. SW
Marston Magna & Rimpton WI Report for April 2020
We opened our March meeting with a selection of excellent soups, followed by tea and cakes. Our speaker was Cindy Chant from Sherborne, where she has been an official town guide for
some years. This talk was about Sir Walter Raleigh, who was born into a privileged family in Devon. He was a soldier, explorer, courtier and a favourite of Queen Elizabeth 1st. Cindy gave us a most informative and humorous talk, and of course, there was great interest in the Sherborne connection. When we are able to go out and about again, Cindy has offered to show us the less well known side to Sherborne. All our plans for future WI meetings, lunches, outings, scrabble and book clubs, have been cancelled until further notice, due to the Covid 19 pandemic. We will keep you posted. Marston Magna Midsummer Fair
With considerable regret, we have made the decision to cancel the Midsummer Fair planned for 20th June, due to the Government’s advice on limiting mass gatherings to deal with the coronavirus outbreak. We will be considering other ways to raise funds for village causes over the next few weeks to compensate for the lack of income.
If you have ideas and offers of support, please contact Ann McKee on 01935 850471. Many thanks Campbell [email protected]

Hello All, it’s certainly a very difficult, uncertain time for all of us but it's important to keep going! I have had a few enquiries about ordering plants which can then be collected from a safe zone. We are endeavouring to do this, and I will send out a list of, first, vegetable and tomato plants, then perennial and bedding. If you already have an idea of what plants you might like, please email using our address below and I will be in touch. Thank you, keep safe, calm and enjoy this wonderful weather if you can.
