Life Beyond S4: Introduction

You are all in S4 and working towards your Standard Grade and Intermediate Exams in May and June.

Your main priority at the moment should be to work as hard as you can

to give yourself the best possible chance of doing well in your final exams.

However, you also need to give a lot of attention and thought to what

you are going to do when you have done your S4 Exams.

Are you going to:

- Return for another year of school? OR - Leave school and go into further education, training or full time

employment.

You are all very much at the crossroads as you consider the different directions and options after this year.

You need to make sure that you make the choice, that is most

appropriate for you.

Page 3: Anderson High School...your prelim results. In other words, if you collect a credit grade in the required elements of your prelim it is likely that you will be recommended to do Higher

3

What are my options after S4?

These are the options available to you:

Option 1: Leaving School

If you are 16 on or before the end of September you can leave school after your exams in May or June. You can not leave school until Christmas if you are 16 between 1st October and 28th February. Pupils in this position are known as Christmas Leavers. In other words, you start a fifth year at Anderson High School but are then free to leave at Christmas, if you wish.

Option 2: Staying On And Doing A Fifth Year At The Anderson High School

Brainstorm Task… With a partner write down some ideas about what you already know about the two options Option 1: Leaving School Option 2: Staying On What can you go into if you What do you know about S5? leave school?

Leaving School

There are opportunities for pupils who decide to leave school after S4. These include:

1. Employment with Training

Modern Apprenticeships This is when you are taken on (employed) by an employer/ business and learn a trade or skill through working with the employer and spending time at Shetland College or a college on the mainland. Most Apprenticeships are organised through Train Shetland, which is located beside the Anderson High School. Examples of Modern Apprenticeships are:

Hairdressing Joinery Beauty Therapy Plumbing

Business Administration Engineering Health and Care Cookery

Construction Motor Vehicle Painting and Decorating

Page 5: Anderson High School...your prelim results. In other words, if you collect a credit grade in the required elements of your prelim it is likely that you will be recommended to do Higher

2. Further Education – College

There are a range of courses, including Art and Design, Business and Management, Hospitality and Tourism, Construction and Health and Care at the Shetland College. Meanwhile, at the NAFC Marine Centre in Scalloway there is the opportunity to do Engineering, Aquaculture and Fishing courses, as well as training to be a Cadet in the Merchant Navy. Some pupils who leave at the end of S4 decide to leave Shetland and study on the mainland at Colleges in Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Perth or Glasgow.

3. Full Time Employment without Training

Going into Employment offers an opportunity to earn money, gain practical experiences and become a more independent person.

Please read the new ‘Guide to Leaving School Booklet’ as it provides more information about the different options available to pupils when they leave school.

Leaving school is a big decision to make at 16 years of age. However,

for many pupils it is the right decision as they are able to go into a training or college course, which suits their skills and interests and enables them to make their way up the career ladder quickly and start earning some money.

Your Pupil Support teacher will be able to help you find out about

courses and training programmes as well as assisting you when you are filling in application forms and preparing for interviews.

You should also speak to your school’s SDS Advisor.

Page 6: Anderson High School...your prelim results. In other words, if you collect a credit grade in the required elements of your prelim it is likely that you will be recommended to do Higher

Staying on for S5

If you do decide to stay on at school and do an S5 at the AHS you must be sure you know what you are committing yourself to.

Below are some key points about Class 5:

- You study 5 subjects, one of them being English. You will also

have one period of PSE each week. Your Pupil Support Teacher will deliver PSE.

- You make 4 other choices.

- You will choose subjects to study at either Higher or

Intermediate level.

- If you are planning to go to University you should choose as many Highers as possible. In general, universities are looking for students to pass at least three Highers in S5, although for some courses students are expected to pass four or even five Highers in S5. Your Pupil Support teacher will advise you on this when you are choosing your subjects.

- Most pupils find S5 the toughest year of their school career and a

big step-up from S4. This is because the pace of work is faster, the work is harder, and there is more homework and regular internal assessments throughout the year.

- It is crucial that you understand this point that S5 will be tough. If

you work hard you will give yourself the best chance of succeeding and doing well but you will struggle to cope if you drift along and do not apply yourself fully.

Page 7: Anderson High School...your prelim results. In other words, if you collect a credit grade in the required elements of your prelim it is likely that you will be recommended to do Higher

7

- Overall your S5 timetable will consist of:

• 5 periods of your 5 subjects – one period each day of your five subjects (25 periods)

• 1 period of PSE • 4 periods of Study – one of them being an English study

period and one of them being a Maths study period (if you choose to do Maths in S5.) You will get more information about Study Periods when you start S5 in June.

Qualifications and Entry Requirements in S5

In S5 you study subjects at:

Higher level – you need a Grade 1 or 2 in particular elements of Standard Grade exam in the subject. OR Intermediate 2 Level – you need a Grade 3 or 4 in your Standard Grade exam in the subject.

You will start S5 in June before your final exams. Your S4 teachers will

recommend whether you should do their subject at Intermediate or Higher level in S5. This recommendation will be based primarily on your prelim results. In other words, if you collect a credit grade in the required elements of your prelim it is likely that you will be recommended to do Higher in S5. Similarly, if you get a General prelim pass you will probably be advised to do Intermediate 2 in S5.

Page 8: Anderson High School...your prelim results. In other words, if you collect a credit grade in the required elements of your prelim it is likely that you will be recommended to do Higher

8

Your exam results will determine if you continue doing subjects at Intermediate or Higher. If you have started doing a subject at Intermediate 2 but then get a credit grade in the final exam you will be able to move up to Higher after the summer holidays. On the other hand, if you have started doing a subject at Higher level in June but collect a general standard grade pass then it is highly likely that you will be advised to move down to Intermediate 2.

We have a Clinic Day on the Monday before the schools go back in

August for pupils to come into school and make changes to their choices following their exam results.

After changes have been made in August you are expected to stick with

your five subjects for the remainder of S5.

Overall, the diagram below illustrates the qualifications in S5 and progression to S6.

School Courses

Please note that credit grades in S4 do not guarantee success at Higher level. As already mentioned, there is a big jump from SG to Higher and you will have to work hard to cope with the demands of Higher even if you have sailed through Standard Grade.

Likewise, experience has shown that pupils find it hard to progress from

Intermediate 2 in S5 to Higher in S6. It is possible for pupils to progress but many departments stipulate that students can only do Highers in S6 if they have a B or even an A at Intermediate 2 level.

Assessment in S5

One of the reasons why Class 5 is such a demanding year is because of the increase in assessment compared to Standard Grade.

The Intermediate and Higher courses you will study are made up of

around 3 units each.

You will sit an internal assessment (also known as NABS) in class, but under exam conditions, after you have completed each unit.

You need to pass these internal assessments / NABS to be able to sit

the final exam in the subject. You usually get two attempts to pass the internal assessments. In exceptional circumstances, you may be allowed three attempts to pass them.

You will sit Prelims in February and there will be other assessments

throughout the year. Checkpoint:

You now should have a clearer idea about what you are letting

yourself in for if you decide to do a Fifth Year.

Check the entry requirements for Highers and Intermediates on pages 9-11.

You will need to be prepared to work hard to cope with the demands

of the courses, the pace of work and the level of assessment. If you have found it hard to motivate yourself in school and struggle to do work at home, S5 may not be for you and you should look carefully at the alternatives to school that were outlined on pages 3 and 4 of the booklet.

1. Aims of the Course

The purpose of the Intermediate Geography course is to study aspects of the physical and human environments and the relationships between them. The Intermediate Geography course also looks at environmental issues and problems. The course leads on from Standard Grade Geography by developing several of the key ideas of that course. The course also develops students’ evaluative skills and extend the Geographical Methods and Techniques learned in the Enquiry Skills work at Standard Grade. The course can be a link between a general pass at Standard Grade and a Higher Geography course in Class 6.

2. Description of the Course

The Intermediate Geography course is divided into three separate units, the contents of which are outlined below. Unit 1 – Physical Environments British Isles: Rock types and landforms; glaciated upland landscapes; upland limestone scenery; coastal landscapes; the uses of these landscapes including farming, forestry, hydroelectric power generation, industry and recreation and the conflicts which arise between these uses. Unit 2 – Human Environments: World population growth and change; urban change and changes in farming in a more economically developed and a less economically developed city. Industrial change in a developed economy. Unit 3 – Environmental Interactions: In this section two topics will be covered. (1) The study of natural hazards – earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical storms – and the effects on people and the landscape. (2) The management of a river system – the Nile – and its impact on people and the landscape.

3. Entry Requirements for the Course

It is not essential to have done Standard Grade Geography in order to study this course, however, students should have achieved a general award at Standard Grade in a Social Subject to study for Intermediate 2 Geography. Students who have not done Geography at Standard Grade will have to study an additional unit on a map skills as part of Unit 1 of the Intermediate Geography course.

5. Why Study the Course / What can pupils gain from doing the Course?

"Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future" - Michael Palin, Studying Geography is an excellent preparation for the world of work. By studying geography you will develop a wide range of skills which employers look for, in particular, the skills analyse information, to organise and present ideas, orally and in written form, and the ability to work with others.

6. How is the Course assessed?

Each of the three units will be assessed by questions set in class time under exam conditions (NAB’s). To pass each unit, students must gain at least 50% in these questions. If a student does not pass a particular question then a second assessment exercise on the same work can be done. A prelim exam covering all three units will be set in February and this, along with unit tests, will be the basis of any appeal. At the end of the course, once students have successfully completed all three units, they must sit a final exam which will be externally marked. The mark for this exam will determine the grade at which they pass the Intermediate Geography course.

7. Careers

The skills you will develop through Geography make you of potential interest to a wide range of employers. Statistics show that compared with other subjects, geographers are among the most employable. This is presumably because geographers possess the abilities and skills that employers look for. The close link between the subject and the world around us makes for a long and varied list of related careers for example working with development or aid agencies, environmental work, using Geographical Information Systems, working for the census office and in tourism and recreation. Scottish Languages Baccalaureate

The Scottish Languages Baccalaureate was launched in 2009 for pupils who are very keen on modern languages Its aim is to encourage more young people to study language courses in upper secondary school and to help young people to make the transition from school to higher/further education and employment. To pass the Baccalaureate, you must do the following by the end of S6:

• Gain qualifications in two modern foreign languages and in English. Two of these qualifications must be Advanced Highers; the other one must be a Higher.

• Carry out and pass an Interdisciplinary Project

The modern foreign languages offered at Anderson High School to the required level are French and German. If you have only studied one language in S3 and S4, you may be able to start a second language and take it to Higher or even Advanced Higher during your time in S5 and S6. A few pupils from different parts of Shetland have done this recently. The Interdisciplinary Project is what makes a Scottish Languages Baccalaureate unique. It is an Advanced Higher Unit (equivalent to half of an Advanced Higher) in which you apply your subject knowledge in realistic contexts. You carry out an investigation or practical assignment of your own choice — possible themes could be:

• ‘How Shetland’s culture is perceived by visitors from various countries’ • ‘Use of language skills in employment in Scotland’ • ‘How companies advertise products in different ways in different languages’

This is likely to involve you working outwith the school, for example in a community or workplace setting, or by video link with universities or colleges in Scotland or with people abroad. The Interdisciplinary Project will help you to develop and show evidence of initiative, responsibility, and independent working, skills of real value in the world of higher education and work. You will also receive plenty of support from teaching staff. It is possible to pass the Baccalaureate ‘with Distinction’. This requires a grade A in one of the Advanced Higher courses, one other grade A in any other component, and at least a grade B in all other components. To find out more about the Scottish Baccalaureate, go to www.sqa.org.uk/baccalaureates.

By studying Higher RMPS you will gain an opportunity to fully engage with some of life’s most challenging questions, while at the same time equipping yourself with valuable skills in critical thinking, analysis and evaluation.

Higher RMPS can be an extremely useful qualification to have if you are interested in a career in law, medicine, the police, social work, primary teaching, journalism, care or just about anything else. It will also contribute towards entry into any university or college course.

Checkpoint

Your Pupil Support teacher will help you plan a course of study for S5 by giving you information about courses, reviewing your abilities, interests and qualities and discussing options available to you when you leave school.

You should spend time in PSE and at home researching the qualifications

and skills that you are likely to need for any career you have in mind or for college or university. This will have a direct bearing on the subjects that you choose.

Be realistic in your choice of courses for S5. Higher courses are

considerably more demanding than Standard Grade courses and you may be well advised to follow a mixture of Higher and Intermediate courses.

However, pupils who are intending to go to university may have to take a

number of Highers to meet entrance requirements.

Try and ensure there is a good balance in your chosen subjects. As far as possible you should choose a reasonable spread of subjects, although you must ensure that you have included subjects that are essential for a particular job or career you are interested in pursuing.

Overall:

Research carefully what is likely to be the best course choices for you.

Be realistic in the choice and level of courses you make. Make your courses as balanced and varied as possible. You need to be ready to work really hard in S5 in school and at home to give yourself the best chance of succeeding.
