Describe below each one, what the procedure is, what is included in the procedure, what the dentist is looking for, what instruments are used in the procedure, why the instrument is used and any other detail you can include, be careful to use the correct names, terminology and spellings. For example: Scale and polish – (308.1.2b) This is also called a Dental Hygiene appointment, this is when a clinician uses an ultrasonic scaler and/or a hand scaler to remove plaque and debris from under the patients gum line or on the tooth surface. In the table below you will find descriptions of certain teeth, try to name the tooth that is being described.

Type of Tooth Description

These teeth have a flattened crown with one root. They are used for cutting food. The palatal or lingual surfaces of all these teeth have an enamel plateau called the cingulum.

They have a large conical crown with a pointed incisal edge and one long root. They are used to cut and tear food. The upper have the longest of all the roots.

These have two cusps, they are used for tearing and chewing. The upper first have two roots (buccal and palatal) all the others have one root.

They all have a large occlusal surface for grinding and chewing food. All upper have three roots (palatal, mesiobuccal and distobuccal) All the lower have two roots (mesial and distal). The upper first has five cusps, the fifth one is called the cusp of Carrabelli. The lower first has five cusps, three buccal and two lingual. All others have four cusps. The roots of the third vary in number, with the uppers often being fused together.
