“M y mantra is be inclusive. As a teacher and coach, I look at each student individually and ask, ‘how can I put them in the best position to contribute, to be challenged, and to succeed.’ If you respect students and truly care about what they have to say, you can cultivate leadership.” —Peter Drench “I promptly broke my wrist,” recalls Rachel Bain ’98, Andover’s standout former softball cocaptain, of the day she first met Peter Drench. Bain was a participant in PALS, PA’s outreach program for Lawrence middle- schoolers, and Coach Drench had come to see the eighth-grader play. “A runner slammed into me in the bottom of the sixth and cracked my wrist, but Coach Drench had seen my potential. He has been my mentor ever since. Even when I was just 14, he respected me as a person, not just an athlete. He was there for me at a very critical age, and that’s why I came back to help him coach and raise funds to upgrade the Academy’s softball facilities. That’s just the very nature of Andover.” Pitching in for “Coach” Peter Drench, pictured here with Rachel Bain, has taught history and social science and coached softball at Andover for more than 25 years. Last May he achieved his 300th victory at Andover with a come-from-behind win against Exeter.

“I promptly broke my wrist,” recalls Rachel Bain ’98, Andover’s

standout former softball cocaptain, of the day she first

met Peter Drench. Bain was a participant in PALS,

PA’s outreach program for Lawrence middle-

schoolers, and Coach Drench had come to

see the eighth-grader play. “A runner

slammed into me in the bottom of the sixth and cracked my wrist, but Coach Drench had

at a very critical age, and that’s why I came back to help him

coach and raise funds to upgrade the Academy’s softball facilities. That’s

just the very nature of Andover.”
