Andrea Alvarez(https://advisory.my.salesforce.com/_ui/core/userprofile/UserProfilePage?u=005C0000007DxX9&tab=sfdc.ProfilePlatformFeed), eTech Senior Coordinator, knows a thing or two about being busy. She balances a complex and demanding job with
involvement in many avenues around the firm, from Community Impact to Advisory Board
University.
Graduating from The College of William and Mary in 2014 with a degree in American
Studies and Marketing, Andrea never expected to take a role with the firm’s internal
technology department. She never even visited the office before her first day, and
remembers conducting her second round interview from a closet at a friend’s house.
Growing in her role“My first week at the Advisory Board, I was completely intimidated. I didn’t understand
anything that the enterprise technology (eTech) team discussed,” Andrea says with a
laugh.
It didn’t take long for her to gain confidence—and solid technology skills.
In her role, Andrea supports the eTech team on large projects, working closely with DanHolohan(https://wd5.myworkday.com/advisory/d/inst/autocompletesearch/247$4267.htmld#TABINDEX=0&SUBTABINDEX=0)Chief Information Officer. Her role spans testing and launching firmwide tools, serving as
an eTech liaison to the firm, and organizing department events and trainings.

“It’s interesting to get to see the firm from an internal perspective. I understand issues from
a different angle,” she says. “eTech does not just fix what’s broken. We wear many hats.
Everything you do at some point has touched our work.”
Serving the communityAndrea serves as Community Impact lead for eTech. In this role, she spearheads the
laptop donation drive, donating old laptops to the community. In the month of December,
eTech donated 150 laptops to schools and nonprofit at lowtono cost to the receiving
organization.
She also served on a fundraising and corporate sponsorship pro bono project, providing
One Common Unity (http://www.onecommonunity.org/) (OCU) tools to buildpartnership with community. Outside of work, she coaches a Girls on the Run(https://www.girlsontherun.org/)team.
Coaching Girls on the Run

Andrea was asked to attend the Washington Business Journal 2015 CorporatePhilanthropy Awards(http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/promo/philanthropy). “We shared a table
with Mary’s Center (http://www.maryscenter.org/). It was inspiring to be there andnetwork with amazing and dedicated people.”

Finding opportunities around the firmIn addition to involvement with Community Impact, Andrea is on the Associate
Development Series committee, coleads the firmwide orientation on eTech, participates in
internal internships, and is an Advisory Board University frequent flier.
“I love going to training sessions. I try to take a learning opportunity at least once week. I
save PowerPoints from every training to refer back. My favorite Advisory Board University
session is ‘Getting things done,’ with Rebecca Fayed. It always inspires me.”
Andrea credits her manager, Angela Thorpe(https://advisory.my.salesforce.com/_ui/core/userprofile/UserProfilePage?u=005C0000003xaLV), in providing her opportunities to try new things. “I wouldn’t bewhere I am if I didn’t have a manager who pushed me and believed in my potential.”
Andrea’s advice on getting involved
