Probleme?

• Ce înseamnă Comunicarea Ştiinţei? • Trebuie, într-adevăr, să comunicăm Ştiinţă • Dacă da, CUI? • Cine are nevoie de Comunicarea Ştiinţei?

15 Nov NASA's Chandra Finds Youngest Nearby Black HoleAstronomers using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory have found evidence of the youngest blackhole known to exist in our cosmic neighborhood. The 30-year-old black hole provides a uniqueopportunity to watch this type of object develop from infancy.

The speculation was prompted by a cryptic notice on NASA'swebsite about "an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestriallife".

11/10/27/ New Sci. Engines of the future: The cyber crystal ball

The future is being prepared now, so we may be able to tell where it's headed if we can learn to read the web right

Web search holds the key to the future. So say the Time Monks, as the group that runs the Web Bot project styles itself. This uses web crawler software to find 300,000 keywords in blogs, forums and chat rooms, then applies a filtering algorithm to the text around each keyword, combining the results to predict future events.

According to Recorded Future, this can help predict events such as stock market trends, the launch of new pharmaceuticals, even terrorist attacks. Yahoo's research lab in Barcelona, Spain, has developed a similar system called Time Explorer.

11/10/27 BBC Cosmos may show echoes of events before Big Bang

Evidence of events that happened before the Big Bang can be seen in the glow of microwave radiation that fills the Universe, scientists have asserted. Roger Penrose said that analysis of this cosmic microwave background showed echoes of previous Big Bang-like events. The events appear as "rings" around galaxy clusters in which the variation in the background is unusually low.

Barcelona - Researchers from the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology at UAB, in collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM) have developed an identification system for oocytes and embryos in which each can be individually tagged using silicon barcodes.

10/11/22 Quantum time travel: Black hole not required How a quantum particle would fare if it were to make a leap into the past? In 1991, the British physicist David Deutsch imagined a particle that travels back and destroys its former self, creating a grandfather-type paradox. Against all expectation, Deutsch went on to solve the paradox. He did so by invoking the "many worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics in which the instant the particle enters the closed time-like curve, the universe splits in two. In one universe, the particle survives having failed to kill itself; in the other, it is destroyed. By invoking multiple universes, Deutsch cunningly avoids the grandfather paradox and resolves one of the fundamental problems with time travel. Seth Lloyd and his MIT team have identified a new approach to the problem that opens up the strange world of time travel to experiments.

10/11/19 Controlling Cursors With Thoughts: Faster, Simpler, and More Accurately; Advance Helps People Regulate Their Own Brain Response, With Therapeutic Implications

ScienceDaily— Using a new brain-computer training approach, 14 volunteers learned in only six minutes how to move a screen cursor with their thoughts. Near-instant feedback helped the people quickly master some of their own brain responses. The findings were presented at Neuroscience 2010, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, held in San Diego.

10/11/18 Study suggests precognition may be possibleA Cornell University scientist has demonstrated that psi anomalies, more commonly known as precognition, premonitions or extra-sensory perception (ESP), really do exist at a statistically significant level, even if they are currently unexplained in terms of known physical or biological mechanisms."

In a paper to appear in the leading (peer-reviewed) social psychology publication, The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Daryl Bem described nine experiments, in most of which he reversed the order of well-known psychological experiments such as recall and affective priming, so that what was usually seen as the cause became the effect. The experiments were carried out over a period of eight years and were well-designed and controlled and rigorous enough to be replicated in the future by other researchers.

Moving holograms: From science fiction to reality

Now anyone can send holographic appeals to Obi Wan Kenobi just like Princess Leia. A team from the University of Arizona’s College of Optical Sciences has developed a

system that can produce truly three-dimensional images and the viewer is not required to wear special 3D glasses. The system allows the projection of a three-dimensional, moving image that refreshes every 2 seconds. So in many respects it would be very similar to R2D2’s projected holographic message in Star Wars. This means we can record a 3D image in one location and show it in another, in real-time, anywhere in the world - Nasser Peyghambarian, leader of the research team. This technology could have applications in telemedicine, advertising, updatable 3D maps, entertainment – and take all of them to a whole new level.
