ANZAC DAY DAWN SERVICE CRANBOURNE RSL April 25th 5.45am

It was fantastic to see so many of our students and families at the Cranbourne

RSL ANZAC Day Dawn Service. Our school leaders did a great job

representing our school. Our students looked fantastic in full school uniform.

We were the only school to do this and one of only a handful of students who

attended. It was a very proud moment for Abigael and Nandan our SRC

leaders as they lay the wreath, made by our students, at the Cenotaph. I also received some

wonderful feedback from members of the RSL and other attendees who spoke very well of our

students and the way they conducted themselves. Special thanks to Nicole Bates our grade 5/6

teacher for not only attending the service with me but also for her work in preparing our school

leaders. Special thanks to our Art Teacher Catherine Medwin for making the wreath with the

students. A great effort.

ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY On Tuesday 24th April, we conducted our school based ANZAC day assembly. I apologise for not

communicating this event earlier to parents. Our assembly this year was inside and we raised the

Australian flag for the first time inside the stadium. This together with the raising of the Aboriginal flag

will now be a part of every assembly. Our SRC leaders

Nandan and Abigael did a great job in assisting me to

conduct the assembly. We got some great feedback from

the ceremony next year.

SAFETY DRILLS As part of our OH&S requirements, we have a schedule of activities where we practice our response to critical incidents. This could include a Lockdown, Evacuation onsite or Evacuation off site, just to name a few. As our school increases in size, so does the need for regular practice. With all of these drills, we always let the students know that it is a drill i.e. a practice. In some instances, we also include the local emergency services. If we were to do this, we will give all parents ample warning via Sentral so as not to cause any concern if they were to see emergency services arriving at the school. If you were to hear our school warnings or alarms, it is not a signal for you to contact the school or to arrive to collect your child. In a real situation, these actions can compromise the safety of all children. Practising our safety processes is a normal part of our operation. Please contact me at school if you would like further information. FINANCE MEETING Our next Finance sub committee is this Thursday 3rd May 2.15pm ENROLMENT 2019 Our enrolment process for 2019 has commenced. Parents wishing to enrol their child are to contact the school so they can be included in this process. Our first two school enrolment sessions are booked out and we are now taking bookings for the third. Please ensure the successful inclusion of your child by contacting the school and registering for the enrolment program. ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Our annual report for 2017 has been approved by Department of Education and will be made public following its presentation at the next School Council meeting Thursday 10th May 2pm. As the first item will be to present the approved Annual Report 2017 all parents are invited to attend that part of the meeting. Following this meeting the Annual report will made available via the school website. LANGUAGES – SPANISH Thank you to all of the parents who responded to the languages survey recently. Following all of our research and surveying of preference and to tie in with our educational vision for Barton Primary School it has been decided that from term 4 this year Spanish will be included in our curriculum from grades Prep – 6. The teaching of Languages-Spanish will commence with a cultural awareness program term 4 2018 after we have recruited a suitably qualified teacher. The actual teaching of the Spanish language will commence in term 1 2019. There are many reasons why we have chosen Spanish which includes:

It has the same alphabet as English therefore easier to learn

It is a Latin based language therefore it will assist students to learn other Latin based languages such as Italian or French and even English.

Spanish is the 2nd most common language spoken in the world (Mandarin is the most common. English is 3rd.) This will become an exciting part of our school curriculum and school culture. Thank you to Alana Sutherland one of our teacher Reps on School Council for her work with the survey.

Please contact me if you would like further information regarding our Languages – Spanish program.

EDUCATION SUB COMMITTEE

As a member of School Council, councillors must nominate membership to at least one sub-

committee. These include Finance, Education and Community. The Barton PS Education Sub

Committee meets once a month, is convened by myself and has approximately 3-4 School

Councillors as members.

During our continued establishment phase of the school, a major task we have to complete is

ensuring all school policies are written, discussed and ratified at School Council. All BPS

policies comply with DET recommendations and standards and adhere to the Schools Policy

and Advisory Guide http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/spag/Pages/spag.aspx,

accessible by the general public. You can find policies on the school website at

http://bartonps.vic.edu.au/parents/#policies.

We also discuss whole school matters regarding education such as Languages, upcoming DET

required events such as NAPLAN and general curriculum needs and outcomes.

If you wish to discuss any matters regarding policies, the curriculum and/or student learning,

please don’t hesitate to contact one of the following school council members who can bring your

questions/comments to our meetings.

Just a reminder that hat season ends at the end of April. It will once again commence in mid-

August, according to new SunSmart requirements.

In conjunction, now that it is beanie, and jacket season, please ensure all items of clothing from

the waste up have the Barton logo and have been purchased from Primary School Wear. If

scarves, gloves or layers are required underneath BPS items, please ensure these are navy

blue.

ANZAC DAY

This week the grade

1/2 students have

been learning all

about the history of

ANZAC Day.

Reminders:

Uniform:

FULL school uniform as according to the uniform policy is expected, including socks that are white or navy blue, shoes that are fully black and hair ties (including bows) that are navy, purple or white.

It is IMPORTANT to clearly label all of your child’s items.

School hats are no longer required from week 3.

Reading: Students are expected to be reading at home every night. This can be their

take-home reader, library book, a book from home, or a book allocated on one of their online programs. It is important to record your child’s reading in their yellow reading journal.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to Term 2! We have a very exciting term planned for our year 3-6 students. Reading,

Writing and Number workshops will continue to occur – as we begin new topics and units, groupings and

teachers may be changing for your child, to ensure they are still within workshops targeting their

learning. This term in our Inquiry units, both years 3/4 and 5/6 have a Civics and Citizenship focus. The

year 3/4s will be learning about democracy, Australia’s government (at a local level in

particular), and rules and laws; whereas the year 5/6s will be delving further into each

level of Australia’s government, their roles and responsibilities, the electoral process,

as well as how laws and bills are made.

Big Writes

Just a reminder that each Wednesday, your child will be bringing home a Big Write prompt that they will

use on Thursdays. It is vital that your child is participating in ‘Big Talk’ at home so they can generate

some ideas they can use in their Big Write. This helps the students eliminate writer’s block on Thursdays

during writing time, and allows them to get started on their writing straight away. They are not required to

write anything down during these discussions at home, however if they would like to jot down some dot

points to refer to on Thursdays this is also fine. Students are not to complete an entire written piece at

home. The Big Talk should only take 5-10 minutes to complete, and can be done while eating

dinner/breakfast, or in the car on the way to/from school, or any other time that you find appropriate.

Ongoing Reporting

The Ongoing Reporting module on Sentral has gone live! Please ensure you are accessing Sentral to

keep track of your child’s progress in their learning. Moving forward into the remainder of 2018, this will

directly reflect what your child is learning about in workshops, and will show you the skills that your child

has mastered. If you have any trouble accessing Sentral, please see your child’s teacher, or ask at the

office.

Reminders:

School starts at 8:55am sharp – students must be here before this time, in order to start their

learning on time each day.

As of week 3, students are no longer required to wear their hats out in the yard. Students’ are

able to leave their hats at school in their lockers until they will need them later in the year.

Please think of ways that your child can minimise the amount of waste they bring to school each

day, so they can be a Zero Hero, and hopefully win the class trophy at assembly.

The Year 4 students are collecting old newspapers as part of their science unit on materials – if

you have any at home, could you please send these into school by Week 6. Thank you!
