4-H is an informal, prac-tical, learning-by-doingeducational program foryouth. The purpose of 4-H isto help youth acquireknowledge, develop lifeskills, and form attitudesthat will enable them tobecome self-directing, pro-ductive members of society. Professional and volun-teer staff provide education-al projects and activities inanimal science, home eco-nomics, natural resources, and handcrafts, as well asleadership and citizenship. 4-H is America's largestout-of-school educationalprogram for youth. Nearly4.5 million youth nationwide now participate in 4-H, under the guidance of600,000 extension-trainedadult volunteer leaders. Anestimated 36 millionAmerican adults are former4-H members.

How it Began What is now 4-H beganin the early 1900s, whenyouth agriculture clubsappeared in different partsof the country at the sametime. These early effortswere organized in ruralschools or through"Farmers' Institutes" organ-ized by agriculture collegesto bring the latest scientificinformation to farmers andtheir families. In 1914, the U.S.Congress the Smith-LeverAct, formally establishingExtension work on a cooper-ative basis among the U.S.Department of Agriculture, the state land grant col-leges, and counties in eachstate. Funds were includedfor youth programs, whichbecame known as 4-H in1924.

The Four H's The four H's stand forHead, Heart, Hands, andHealth. "Head, heart, andhands" was a familiarphrase with public speakersin the early 1900s.Educators expressed theliberalizing of conventionaleducation ("the three R's")

to include practical arts("the three H's"). The three H's wereadopted by program organ-izers to reflect the educa-tional theme of 4-H. Afourth "H" was added forhealth. Together the fourH's symbolized the develop-ment of the head, to think, plan, and reason; the heart,to care for others, accept cit-izenship responsibilitiesand develop positive atti-tudes; the hands, to be use-ful, helpful, and skillful;and health, to practicehealthful living, enjoy life, and use leisure time pro-ductively.

The 4-H Emblem, Colors, Motto

The national 4-Hemblem is a green four-leafclover with the letter "H" oneach leaf. The design wasadopted as the nationalemblem in 1911. Congresshas twice passed legislationprotecting the 4-H nameand emblem. Similar to acopyright, this protectionmeans that the 4-H nameand emblem cannot be usedwithout authorization bythe national organization. Green and white are the4-H colors. Green symbol-izes springtime, life, andyouth, while white standsfor high ideals. The 4-H motto is "Tomake the best better." Itwas adopted in 1927 whenthe 4-H pledge was intro-duced.

The 4-H PledgeI pledge ....My head to clearer thinkingMy heart to greater loyaltyMy hands to larger service, andMy health to better livingFor my club, my communi-ty,My country, and my world When repeating thepledge, a member raises theright hand to the side of thehead while speaking lineone, lowers the hand toheart while speaking linetwo; extends the hand, palms upward, while speak-

Otis Hall, state 4-H leader in Kansas, was responsible for the orig-inal wording, whichremained unchanged until1973 when the words "andmy world" were added.

It’s our fair!by David HillEditor

Our county fair is part ofthe fabric of this communi-ty. It is our heritage, cultureand tradition on display. Itis an opportunity for growthand development, not justfor youth, but adults, busi-nesses and leaders. Itteaches life lessons and cre-ates opportunities to devel-op and explore links withother professionals, andnew friendships. COVID-19 may have setus back on our heels, but wehaven’t thrown in the towel. We shrugged and found anew way to do things. We don’t know what toexpect next year, but we’resure to find a way to bringback our fair.
