The ANDS “Identify My Data” service and related issues
Andrew Treloar, ANDS
JISC Research Identifier Workshop
3 Feb 2010, London1
Australian National Data Service (ANDS) An initiative of the Australian Government being
conducted as part of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy ($A24M) and the Super Science Initiative ($A48M)
A collaboration between Monash University, the Australian National University and CSIRO
Operations nodes in Melbourne, Canberra, and elsewhere
About 40 staff, and growing2ands.org.au
What does ANDS do? Establish the Australian Research Data Commons
A shared data space Collaborative research Distributed model Data stewardship Interoperability and access
Vision: ‘More researchers re-using more data more often’

Why make data public? Funding guidelines
publicly funded research avoid duplication encourage re-use
Open research verification of claims available for re-analysis
Longitudinal studies Collaboration, mash-ups, linking data…

Publishing Data Benefits Acknowledgement for the creator/ publisher Stable part of scholarly communication

Publishing and Scholarly Comm’n
Registration (to resolve questions of precedence) Certification (of the validity of a scholarly claim) Awareness (to ensure that scholars are kept
aware of new work) Archiving (to preserve the scholarly record over time) Rewarding (for measured performance according to discipline or
system-specific metrics) Roosendaal, H., and Geurts, P. 1997, ‘Forces and functions in scientific communication: an
analysis of their interplay’, Cooperative Research Information Systems in Physics, August 31—September 4, Oldenburg, Germany.http://www.physik.uni-oldenburg.de/conferences/crisp97/roosendaal.html7ands.org.au
Data and Publications
Traditionally data has been a means to generate a publication (or part of it)
ANDS wants to see data as a first class object, with equal (but different) status

ANDS Identify my Data Allows researchers or their organisations to
allocate persistent identifiers to datasets. Why?
What happens to the published references to your datasets when your Department changes name?
Or your data store software completely changes platforms? Or your webserver re-arranges its directory hierarchy?
13ands.org.au
What is a persistent identifier? A URL says where something is Problem if the thing is moved: need to tell everyone A PID says where to look for where the location of the
thing is written ANDS provides a place to write that location Now if the thing moves, the PID stays the same, and
the location only has to be updated in one place
14ands.org.au
Four kinds of persistence identifier
text string – won’t expire
resolution ability to get from identifier to object
binding/mapping relationship between identifier and object
object in its storage system
15ands.org.au
Managing persistent identifiers If one has a PID, someone has to manage it. ANDS provides the infrastructure to enable
machines/people to update the location information when data is moved
NOTE: Software is not a solution to the human problem, or the need for ongoing responsibility for PIDS

Nuts and Bolts Identifier = 102.100.100/243 ANDS is part of the global Handle infrastructure to
resolve persistent identifiers http://hdl.handle.net/102.100.100/243
ANDS has just joined DataCite, and will this year start offering DOIs for published, citable data
In effect, this is a Basic+Premium service offering
