I hope you have enjoyed and benefited from our readings and lessons in Matthew this month. I know I
have. If you've kept up with our schedule you will arrive twice at what sometimes seems to be the
most intimidating command in all of Scripture: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you." These are some of Jesus' last words on earth to His apostles, and we have come to
know this passage as The Great Commission.
While there are lots of "great" things about this Commission, the passage is known as The Great Commis-
sion because earlier in Jesus's ministry he had sent seventy of His disciples to preach exclusively among
the Jewish communities. This first commission is known as The Limited Commission. Since the final com-
mission was to take the Gospel to all peoples, not just Jews, it is The Great Commission .
There is so much to say about this important passage that space here simply won't allow for a thorough
discussion of it. But I want to focus for a minute on the first word, "Go." While we generally think of this
term as the command “to go”, it is my understanding that the word does not have that imperative force at
all. The actual command is "make disciples of all nations," and another translation, perhaps a better one,
might say, "As you are going, make disciples...." See how that changes the effect. Instead of commanding
"destination evangelism", Jesus is commanding "lifestyle evangelism". The difference is huge. It means we
don't necessarily need plane tickets and passports to evangelize. We just need mouths.
I witnessed a wonderful example of that this past week. For several months now Felisha Gatlin, her daugh-
ter Reke´, and her mother Rosa have been worshiping with us as they looked for a new church home.
They've lived in Peachtree City seventeen years. What brought them here? Felisha is a stylist, and one of
her clients is our sister, Lorrie Lay, who spoke to Felisha about church. On Tuesday afternoon Felisha,
Reke´, and Rosa, three generations of family, were baptized into Christ for the remission of their sins. We
rejoice with the angels of heaven to welcome these three ladies into our fellowship.
God works The Great work of the Commission through your words. So be a part of it, "as you are going." □
