Andy Warhol Che Guevara Photoshop Action Tutorial by v4r4n 

This tutorial explains you how you can optimize the result of this Photoshop action. 

First of all, choose the picture you want to turn in Pop Art with this action. Prepare your picture and resize it preferably. 

 

Then start the Photoshop action. 

Step 1: Stamp Filter I'm going to reduce the Light/Dark Balance to 6 and the Smoothness to 2 for this photo in order to give more details then the default values do.

Step 2: The Photocopy Filter This step is only here to give more details to the picture. I choose Detail 10, Darkness 19. The result don't look very pretty but don't worry the next steps will arrange this. (This Layer is placed in the blending mode multiply to make the two layers appears)

Step 3: Threshold Adjustment This step is very important because it allow us to get a Black And White picture and only. I reduce the level to 100. 

 

Step 4: Gaussian Blur Now we have to smooth the picture. I reduce the radius to 0.9 pixels. 

 

Step 5: Curves Adjustment This step used to delete the blurred of the picture. Default values suite me. 

 

 

The Last Step ! In this step, you have to work a little bit more then in the previous ones. 

In fact, we want to have a three color images in the final result. For the time being, we will have only a two color ones if we restart the action. So we have to erase de background of the "image2" in order to make it appears in red. The easy method should be by using the brush tool with the Layer Mask of the "image2", or by using the pen tool. But it should be a perilous work that not always gives good results. So I'm going to give you an other method that works quite well in this case because of the one color background. 

Sure enough we can se that the background is compounded of three parts. 

 

So I'm first going to duplicate the "image2" Layer. Then I fill in the bridges between white background and my subject. (You can see then on the top of her arm, on her neck and on the bottom of her right cheek) 

 

Now I can use the "Background Eraser Tool" (E) on this copy to delete the background. And use the Eraser Tool (E) to eliminate the remaining black points on the background. 

   

Lastly, I've just to Ctrl+Click on the "image2 copy" to recover the selection of this Layer. 

I delete the "image2" Layer Mask and I add apply on it a new Layer Mask that will have the form of the selection. I've just to delete "Background copy" & "image2 copy" Layers. And restart the Action. 

   

The result : 

(Nota Bene : of course you can backup the last action in your History Palette to change colors...)
