Sunlight and silence – mountains shrouded in autumnal haze; such are the days of late fall and Indian summer in the Sangre de Cristos of

northern New Mexico. Two centuries ago, before the arrival of Europeans in the area, this was the time of year for the celebration by the Moache

Utes, a nomadic people who gathered to renew their ancestral ties with the Great Spirit.

If Angel Fire were a painting, its compositional elements would balance untamed nature with modern style. Named after its kaleidoscopic sunsets, our family-friendly resort town is nestled high in New Mexico’s mountains. Forested wilderness sprawls

from horizon to horizon, and a wealth of trails can be explored on foot, bicycle, or horseback. Winter transit means strapping on a pair of skis or snowboard and heading down a snow-slicked moun-tainside. After a day on the slopes, soothe your muscles in a hot tub soak, or enjoy a hearty meal at one of our many fine restaurants. Recreation. Relaxation. Restoration. Three keys to the consummate Angel Fire experience.

With over 210 inches of annual snowfall, Angel Fire becomes a winter playground that luxuriates in options. Enjoy one of the 76 ski and snowboarding trails, suitable for all skill levels. The mountain also

features 30-plus acres of gladed tree skiing, snowshoeing, snow skating, snowbiking, and snowmobiling. Or, to put a new spin on an old phrase: The family that sleighs together stays together. If craving peace and solitude, set off into the wilds of the national forests. Pop over to Eagle Nest Lake for a spell of ice fishing. Gravity-defying fun can be had at one of Angel Fire’s two award- winning freestyle terrain parks. The Polar Coaster, the largest tubing park in the Southern Rockies, specializes in kid-friendly screams of delight and glee. And treat your family to some visual candy at dusk, when the setting sun paints the snow-caked moun-tain in brilliant oranges and reds.

As legend says, from these autumn celebrations during the 1780s, came the name and event called “Angel Fire.” Early on the first

morning of the ceremonials, three young braves who had been on a hunting trip returned to the camp with news of a strange glow at the

tip of the peak named Agua Fria. The Utes were uneasy as they gazed at the mysterious tongues of red and orange flickering in the northern sky.

One of the elders broke their awed silence: “It is an omen – the fire of the gods – blessing our annual celebration.” The Utes, though still

awed by this sign, accepted the explanation. From that time on, the Moreno Valley was a sacred place and whenever the rosy glow

appeared above the mountains, it was called the “fire of the gods.”

Summertime in Angel Fire. And the living is easy . . . on the eyes. Bright green grasses sprout everywhere. Wildflowers, like the stunning red Indian Paintbrush or the deep purple Monkshood, blanket the fields and forest floors. Then

there’s the diverse palette of recreational choices. The wheel deal gets the adrenaline pumping on Angel Fire’s world-class mountain biking trails. Tree-hugging takes on a whole new meaning for those who embark on the Zipline Adventure Tour. Rounds of scenic pleasure can be enjoyed on Angel Fire’s 18-hole PGA Champion-ship Golf Course. How else to spend a blue-skied day of leisure? Fishing, bird-watching, rafting, tennis, horseback riding, hunting, or a hike into the heart of rugged wilderness, are all options for summer fun in the high country.

Visual splendor is at the heart of Angel Fire. The sunsets are daily masterpieces. Wildflowers poke their heads up in the spring and peak in July. Fall colors burst across the moun-tainsides for weeks in late September and early October.

For the intrepid spirit, beauty-chasing exploration awaits. Strap on a day-pack, apply sunscreen, and don’t forget to bring rain gear as mountain weather can change rapidly. Within an hour drive of our town, you will find the Wheeler Park Wilderness Area, the Latir Peak Wilderness Area and the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Study Area. Eagle Nest Lake State Park, and Cimarron Canyon State Park, are two other eco-rich environments. Wildlife watchers might catch a glimpse of a black bear, elk herd, or bald eagle. Take to one of the hundreds of trails criss-crossing the forest. Fresh mountain air, a collage of colors, and countless photo-ops will be the privileges provided by nature.

Following the trails of the mountain men who searched for the abundant beaver, Franciscan friars entered the Sangres searching for converts.

These educated gentlemen of the church were quick to learn that they could most easily explain Christianity to the Indians by using old legends,

substituting Christian terminology for native phrases. As a result of their influence, Agua Fria became known as “the place of the fire of the angels.”

Although the Utes rejected most of the Christian influence on their native beliefs, the legend of “Angel Fire” now bore the imprint of both the Indians

and the Spanish culture. The for-mation of the Maxwell Land Grant, that colossus whose imprint was so strongly felt on the land, was formed

in 1884, and the trappers and Spanish visitors from beyond the Sangres told of the strange lights above the mountains surrounding Agua Fria.

Surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with spec-tacular vistas, wildlife and a diversity of terrain for what-ever road your journey takes you down, Angel Fire Resort fosters your sense of adventure, no matter when you visit.

Summertime offers a refreshing respite with cool mountain breez-es to enjoy a wide variety of activities including high altitude golf, zipline adventure tours, fishing, paddle-boating, scenic chairlift rides and an outstanding bike park recently rated the Top Bike Park in the Southwest. Wintertime features sunny blue skies and uncrowded trails for alpine or Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snow-shoeing, tubing and sledding. Lodging options range from the slopeside lodge to nearby condos and homes. Our comfortable and centralized “home away from home” allows you to make the most of every moment here. Vietnam Memorial

After learning of their son David’s death in Vietnam, the Dr. Victor Westphall family founded the Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel on a hill looking south to

Angel Fire. It became the nation’s first Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Today, a state park with free admission, it has a national reputa-tion as an invaluable site for veterans of all wars and their families. While the chapel, always open to the public, nurtures the emotional and spiritual setting of the place, the Visitor Center feeds the imagi-nation of what it was like to serve in Vietnam. Photographs, banners, video and soldier artifacts fill the 6000 square foot center. Outside is a Huey helicopter. Guided tours available. Visitor Center open 9-5 daily. Limited winter hours. 575-377-6900www.vietnamveteransmemorial.org

VETERANS WELLNESS & HEALING CENTER

Targeting the need to treat veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress, local leaders founded the National Veterans Wellness and Healing Center, helping veterans face their fears. The center focuses on creative therapies, healing mind, body and spirit.

Angel Fire is an ideal place to live and raise a family. It’s not just beautiful here, we have crystal clear air year around. After work – and we’re a business friendly community – you can get out and enjoy the climate and

clear your mind. We have four distinct, spectacular seasons, and it’s nearly always sunny; we’re at the same latitude as Mykonos, Greece. You can zip from home to work in just a few minutes with no stop lights. In Angel Fire, the only traffic jam hap-pens when everyone stops for a herd of elk crossing the road.

LIFESTYLEIn Angel Fire, we have plenty of peace and quiet. Forget honking horns, sirens, and the fast-paced city life. Instead, sit outside and count the stars or listen to the elk bugle. Angel Fire is home to artists, writers and internet professionals. When you have scenery like ours, it doesn’t take much to become inspired and create your next masterpiece. You’re family in Angel Fire. We’re informal and personal, with a strong sense of community.

The discovery of gold in Moreno Valley directed attention away from such legends as Angel Fire. The winter of 1863 found folks all

over the west talking about Indians bringing pouches of gold nuggets to the soldiers at Fort Union. The stories moved east and many a coal miner

clinic services. Our local fire department has ambulances and a highly trained EMT staff. Just a half-hour away, Holy Cross Hospital in Taos is a 47-bed acute care facility. We have a dentist and veterinarian, too.

STAYING GREENReduce, reuse, recycle. Angel Fire is doing its part as guardian of the planet with an active recycling program: cardboard, aluminum, plastic, scrap metal, batteries, paper, glass and maga-zines. Recycling trailers are located around town. 575-377-6967

EDUCATIONYou don’t have to live in a large city to give your children a top-notch education. Our elementary and middle school is acknowl-edged as one of New Mexico’s most innovative, and Moreno Valley High School is one of the nation’s top-ranked charter high schools. Students love the four day week.

Tucked between two state parks (Eagle Nest Lake and Cimar-ron Canyon) the village of Eagle Nest is just 10 miles up the Moreno Valley from Angel Fire. A unique community that’s

close to everything; locals say it’s “like stepping back in time, with the amenities of today.” Uncrowded, friendly, fun for all ages, all seasons. Shops and restaurants. Motels, cabins and nearly 250 RV sites in town or nearby. World-class trout fishing in the lake and nearby streams. Eagle Nest is a sought out destination, both summer and winter, with a breathtaking autumn season. Visit the famous High Country Arts & Crafts Festival, July 4th extravaganza with fireworks over the lake, Ice Fishing Derby, Fish Fest, and Polar Bear Plunge New Year’s Day! Visit the Enchanted Circle Gateway Museum and explore our mining history. The Eagle Nest Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center is located at 284 East Therma Drive in downtown Eagle Nest.
