    #hanged 'or (an)ind, it "as the 'ire"or)s that painted the s)y o' bright #olours, "hile

    the 'oa( 'ro( #ha(pagne bottles #a(e out in "a%es, and the 'loor "as being painted in

    red.

    *n +anuary 1st 2010, %a(pires and i((ortals, #reatures hu(ans had ne%er

    belie%ed #ould e&ist, re%ealed the(sel%es, and 'ro( then on e%erything #hanged. hey

    (ultiplied and "e "ere brought to near e&tin#tion.

    the roo( straight into the hall "here the dust "hi#h gathered in the ground, 'loated

    around li)e a (ist, "hile hundreds o' 'eet 'ollo"ed in ordained lines to"ards the light at

    people: (en, "o(en and #hildren had gathered there, still in their pya(as.

    he tor#hes gathered (ore s"eat to the one that already #a(e 'ro( the general

    'ear, 'or although they see(ed #al(, no one (anaged to hide their pani# #o(pletely.

    he "ea) (oonlight sliding do"n 'ro( the s(all s)ylight abo%e the #entre o' the pla9a

    re'le#ted tender lights on (any "orried 'a#es. he siren ust )ept on going, adding

    tension to the (ass. And "hile $ ust )ept thin)ing, that in #ase an e%a#uation "as

    $ s(iled at her. ou thin) $ #a(e all the "ay here to #at#h a #old>

    ou ne%er )no" she said, s(iling.

    $ #li(bed on, behind her and barely had ti(e to grab on be'ore she pressed the

    handle and the bi)e started sliding do"n the piles o' sno". Anti#ipating the great "hite

    $ )ne" so "ell, $ "as disappointed to 'ind that the dar)ness engul'ed the lands#ape

    al(ost #o(pletely and )ept (e 'ro( seeing beyond "hat the bi)es lights shone upon.

    /e%eral hundred (eters ahead the three other sno" bi)es glided along the s(all hills,

    and 'urther a"ay, al(ost indis#ernible, t"o others (o%ed to"ards the North. he

    #o(plete absen#e o' #louds and the "ea) (oon, allo"ed 'or a great %ie" o' the starry

    s)y in all its glory: $ loo)ed up to ad(ire it, "hile A(ilda )ept her attention on not

    going up to a tree or hitting a "ild ani(al.

    o (ost hu(ans, the night "as a #urse, but $ #ouldnt a%oid seeing in it a

    shado"y beauty and the 'la(e o' hope. e #ouldnt truly hate "hat also ga%e us po"er,

    'or not e%en the sun #ould ri%al "ith the (agi# 'ro( the (oon and the stars, and any

    "i9ard "ho thought other"ise "as in denial.

    $n the distan#e, the t"o 'irst bi)es #a(e to a halt and it too) (e a 'e" se#onds to

    re#ogni9e the silhouette o' the "at#hto"er that rose high up at the top o' a s(all hill.

    lodging only one sentinel at a ti(e. here "ere no lights in or near it and it "as

    he re(aining sno" bi)es dispersed, ea#h going to a di''erent hill, and A(ilda

    did the sa(e, going to the right and turning o'' the headlights. /he "as 'or#ed to redu#e

    her speed and $ heard her pray in a lo" %oi#e. /he raised her right hand to"ards the

    shades and pressed the little button ne&t to the lens. $ did the sa(e on (ine and (y

    %ision "as then pro#essed in tones o' green and dar) gray, and $ #ould easily (a)e out

    the hills #ur%es and the tops o' the trees #o%ered in the 'lu''y sno" that had #o(e do"n

    that sa(e a'ternoon.
