ANGELO STATE UNIVERSITY IS A MEMBER OF THE TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SYSTEM

The Angelo State baseball program didn’t waste any time putting itself on the national map by making the ncaa

Division II World Series in only its third season as a program in 2007 and returning to the ncaa postseason again in 2009 and 2012. asu, which is 305-166 since starting the baseball program in 2005, also won the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship in 2007 and 2012.

The Rams have never expe-rienced a losing season in pro-gram history and have averaged 38 wins per season—including winning 51 games in the historic 2007 campaign. The asu base-ball team has produced 66 play-ers selected as all-conference performers, 17 all-region picks, 15 All-American selections from eight different players, and 18 players have advanced to play for professional baseball teams.

Head coach Kevin Brooks has led the Rams since the

baseball program’s incep-tion after a playing career at Baylor University and coach-ing experiences at University of the Incarnate Word, Texas a&m University, Hardin-Sim-mons University and Univer-sity of Texas San Antonio. Under Brooks’ leadership, the Rams have established themselves as yearly contend-ers in the Lone Star Confer-ence and are a destination for top talent from around Texas and the country.

Prior to the 2005 season, Angelo State did, in fact, have a baseball history. The school fielded a team

during its junior college days as San Angelo College, and baseball in San Angelo set its roots during this time.

In 1961, the college spon-sored Norm Cash Night to honor the eventual four-time all-star Detroit Tigers first baseman. Cash played baseball and football for the Rams in

the early 1950s and then went on to achieve national acclaim with the Tigers. Dur-

ing the 1961 season, Cash led the American League with 193 hits and a .361 batting average.

Kevin Brooks enters his ninth season as the head baseball coach at Angelo State after leading the Rams to the Lone

Star Conference championship, the conference’s tournament title, the program’s third trip to the ncaa Division II national tournament and being named the lsc’s Coach of the Year in 2012.

During his eight-year tenure at Angelo State, Brooks has compiled a 305-166 overall record, including a 166-89 lsc record and an 8-7 record in the ncaa post-season. That run also includes the lsc South Division title in 2006, the Lone Star Conference and ncaa Division II South Central Regional titles in 2007, a semifi-nal appearance in the 2009 South Central Regional tournament, and last season’s lsc regular-season championship and tourna-ment title. He has coached 66 All-Lone Star Conference selec-tions, 14 All-Region picks and 15 All-American selections. Brooks has also prepared his players for

the next level as 18 former Rams have played or are currently playing professional baseball.

Under Brooks’ guidance, the 2012 Rams went 20-8 in lsc play and celebrated the lsc tourna-ment title on their home field. asu hit .321 as a team in 2012 with 120 doubles, 36 home runs, 23 triples and stole 105 bases. The pitching staff had an earned run average of 3.87 in 457.2 innings of work and limited opponents to a .270 batting average. The Rams out scored their opponents 409-241 in the course of the 57-game season. asu was dominant on its home field, going 24-4 at Foster Field and had 11 players honored with lsc postseason awards.

Prior to becoming the first base-ball coach Angelo State history, Brooks was an assistant coach at Hardin-Simmons University 2000–03 and an assistant coach at the University of Texas-San Antonio in 2000. Preceding that, he was a volunteer assistant coach at Texas a&m in 1999 helping the Aggies to the Big XII title in their run to the ncaa Division I College

World Series. He served as an assistant coach at the University of Incarnate Word from 1994–1998 and lent his knowledge to the Jayhawk League where he worked as a summer coach in 1993 and for the Hays (Kan.) Larks in 1995.

In Brooks’ 17 years of coach-ing experience, he coached Major League Baseball National League All-Star Lance Berkman when he played summer ball for the Hays Larks. With Brooks’ guidance, the Hays Larks finished second in the 1995 National Baseball Congress World Series behind the 1996 USA Olympic Baseball Team.

A graduate of Baylor Univer-sity, Brooks earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education and played baseball for the Bears base-ball team from 1988–1991. He also holds a master’s degree in physical education from Incarnate Word.

Brooks has been a resident of San Angelo since 2000, when his wife, Sally Walling Brooks, was named head coach of the Angelo State women’s basketball team. The couple have a daughter, Bailey, 11, and a son Kannon, 9.

John Anderson enters his second season as the assistant base-ball coach for the Angelo State Rams.

Anderson played two seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization during 2007–2008 and later was the hitting coach for the Colts for the 2008 season. For the last six seasons, Ander-son has coached the Minnesota

Blizzard Elite baseball team. He has had 18

players drafted over his six years as coach. His first coaching stint was with the University of Sioux Falls, where he was an assistant coach. He helped coach the squad from a two-win team to winning a conference championship in his first season.

“I think getting John to come back is a huge addition for our program,” asu head coach Kevin Brooks said. “I got to watch him play when he played for the San Angelo Colts and really enjoyed watching him play. He coaches

with the same passion as he played. He has a proven track record with developing players and finding talent along with a ton of energy on the field and in practice. John is a proven winner and a San Angelo icon and I couldn't be happier bringing him back.”

Anderson has played and coached profes-sional baseball for 12 seasons. He was a three-time all-star during his playing career and was named most valuable player of the United Baseball League in 2006 for San Angelo. He has the ubl’s hitting-streak record with a 31-game hit streak.

“I always enjoyed the people and my time in San Angelo and feel it is a great place to raise a family,” Anderson said. “I have a lot of respect for Coach Brooks and what he has built this program into is impressive. That is why I want to be a part of the Ram baseball program. I want to enhance the program and continue winning and become a national contender.”

Michel Robles joins the Angelo State staff as a second-year gradu-ate assistant after

spending last year as a student assistant coach and the previ-ous two years as a right-handed pitcher for the Rams. The Odessa native assists in the develop-ment of the Rams pitching

staff while also pursuing a master’s degree in kinesiology.

As a pitcher for the Rams, Robles was part of the 2009 Angelo State team that made it to the ncaa Division II South Central Regional in Warrensburg, Mo. However, a fractured right elbow led to the end of his playing career and the begin-ning of his venture into coaching.

Rex Scofield enters his fifth season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Angelo State Rams baseball

team after a long and distin-guished career as a coach and administrator in the San Angelo Independent School District (saisd).

Scofield began his coaching career at Big Spring High School and moved to Lamar Consolidated

High School before arriving at Cen-tral High School in San Angelo in 1979. He remained at Central until 1997, spending many of those years as the Bobcats’ head baseball coach.

In June 1997, Scofield was named the saisd’s assistant athletic director. One year later, he was promoted to athletic director, a position he held until his retirement in June of 2008.

opened its doors in 1928 on North Oakes Street near

downtown San Angelo.

Travis Lawler joined the Angelo State baseball coaching staff as a stu-dent assistant in 2012.

A native of College Station, Lawler had a stellar playing career at a&m-Consolidated High School, and after his senior season was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft. He chose

the college route, however, opt-ing to play at the University of Florida. As a freshman, he pitched in 11 games for the Gators and recorded 24 strikeouts. He then transferred to the West Texas region to pitch at Midland College.

In 2009, Lawler was selected in the mlb draft for a second time—this time deciding to sign with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Angelo State Rams baseball team has compiled a 166-61 all-time record at Foster Field, one of the finest ncaa Divi-

sion II facilities in the country.The stadium, located on the

corner of Jackson Street and University Drive, was built in 2000 and also serves as the home of the San Angelo Colts, a professional team in the North American League. Foster Field cost $3 million to construct and was built by Jim Anglea, former head groundskeeper for the Ballpark in Arlington.

Stadium features include 4,200 permanent seats, a Triple A lighting system and a Daktron-ics inning-by-inning scoreboard with video display. In addition, the facility has a large press box area, major league-style dugouts and a complete train-ing and locker room facility.

The field also has state-of-the-art bullpens and batting cages for practice and warm up.

Concessions and restroom areas as well as special clubhouse-style seating areas for enter-taining corporate sponsors and private parties are located on either side of the press box.

The field is covered by Tif 419 grass, an elite grass designed and genetically engineered especially for ballparks (see box). The field dimensions are 325 feet down the lines, 370 feet to the gaps and 395 feet to deep centerfield.

opened in 2011 adja-cent to the northwest corner of Foster Field, the 1,874-square-foot Norris Baseball Clubhouse is home

for the Angelo State Univer-sity Rams baseball team. The $436,000 clubhouse ranks among the best such facilities in all of ncaa Division II baseball.

The clubhouse features a locker room complete with oak lockers for the players, offices for the baseball coaching staff, a players’

lounge and two indoor batting cages, among other amenities. Additionally, the facility features a Pro Batter px2 pitching machine that is a virtual pitching simula-tor. At the time of the purchase, asu was the only college in Texas and the only Division II school in the nation to have this sophisticated pitching machine.

Thirteen donors who actively support the asu baseball pro-gram made the Norris Base-ball Clubhouse possible. The lead gift for the facility and

additional funds for the pitch-ing machine were provided by Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Norris.

ProBatter PX2 is the premier video pitching simulator in the world for baseball. Operated by a touch screen controller and containing a video front of an actual pitcher, it delivers Major League quality pitches thrown to multiple positions both within and outside the strike zone at speeds between 60 and 100 mph. It throws virtually any pitch that a pitcher can throw, including rising fastballs, sinkers, cutters, split finger fastballs, curves, sliders and change-ups which permit a hitter to simulate game-like conditions in a batting cage. The simulator can be manually operated or programmed to deliver a specific pre-selected sequence of pitches.

Athletic TrainingAt Angelo State, the athletic training staff focuses on helping student-

athletes reach and maintain their best health, achieve conditioning goals,

understand best practices to prevent serious injury and recover fully in a

timely manner. Because of this, the university has developed excellent training

and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and ensure safe practice

and competition habits. If injuries do occur, the department is equipped

and prepared to implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs.

The oldest rookieOne of the most inspirational stories in Major League Baseball history has Angelo State ties, albeit on the football field. In 1991, 27-year-old Jimmy Mor-ris joined the Rams as a punter. Once his football career ended, Morris graduated and began coaching baseball and teaching physical science in Texas public schools, winding up at Reagan County High School in 1999. At that time, a long-shot bet with his high school players gave his dormant baseball career new life. As a result of the bet, 35-year-old Morris tried out for Major League Baseball, impressing the scout at tryouts with his 90-mph fastballs. Morris went on to make his Major League debut on Sept. 18, 1999, against the Texas Rangers at the Ballpark in Arlington.

bear the names of each award winner. These awards are given annually at the asu All-Sports Banquet in the spring. The award is given to the top student-athlete in each sport and is voted on by their teammates.

From 1965 to 1997, these awards were pre-sented by Nathan’s Jewel-ers, and asu is immensely grateful to “Babe” Donsky and her late husband Nathan Don-sky for their role in founding and sponsoring these awards. Beginning in 1998, Holland’s Jewelry became the sponsor for these prestigious awards.

ATHLETIC STuDY CENTERThe goal of the Athletic Study Center is to act as the primary academic support contact for student-athletes. The center holds the office of the Athletic Academic Coordinator (acc) for easy visibility and reach. The center houses laptop comput-ers, printers, and individual and collaborative work stations.

ADvISINGAll academic advising is provided through the individual colleges and academic departments.

ACADEMIC PROGRESSDuring each semester, the acc surveys the professors of each student-athlete three times. In each grade check, professors are asked to provide academic prog-ress information such as atten-dance, current grade, at-risk or not, and any additional comments.

MENTORSHIPThe acc provides weekly sessions with mentors for student-athletes identified as “at-risk” based on acc and coach recommenda-tions. During the sessions, grade updates and upcoming assign-ments are discussed. Assignments are reviewed and study plans are implemented if necessary.

TuTORINGFree tutoring is available for student-athletes in Angelo State University’s Tutor Center. In addi-tion to having tutors available for nearly every general education class as well as many upper-level classes, specialized tutoring units include the Math lab, Writing Cen-ter, Modern Language tutoring, Accounting lab and Supplemental Instruction (si). The si program offers extracurricular peer tutor-ing groups for traditionally tough classes. Study sessions are led by students who have completed and earned high grades in the courses. si sessions are conducted multiple times throughout the week.

A domesticated breed

originating in Spain over two

centuries ago, the Rambouillet

are compact, white-wooled

sheep with rams that proudly

carry long, curving horns.

The first Rambouillet ram

“Shorty” was donated to

the college in 1940 by area

rancher D.T. Jones, who had

two daughters attending the

school. Jones’ generosity

typified the West Texas spirit

and the support ASU has had

throughout its history from

the people of San Angelo

and the surrounding area.

SCHOLAR ATHLETE AWARDS

The Angelo State Athletic Foundation is a non-profit 501-c3 organization whose sole mission is to provide support to Angelo State Athletics. A priority for the Athletic Foundation is scholarship funding above what the University provides to ensure asu reaches the maximum equivalencies allowed by

ncaa rules. The Athletic Foundation also provides funding in support of recruiting the next generation of Rams and ’Belles, life skills programming for student-athletes, academic support for student-athletes, and other initiatives important to the welfare of student-athletes and the success of athletic teams.
