Supplies: Cotton fabrics: 12 ½” x 12 ½” black w/gray crosses for background 6” x 6 ½” gray/green solid for left hill 6 ¼” x 9” blue/gray texture for right hill 2 ½” x 12 ½” cream print for ground 2” x 3” tan solid for angels’ faces, hands, and feet 3” x 3” piece of Heat & Bond lite, or similar Pre-washed wool for appliqués: 3” x 5 ½” gray (angel dress) 3” x 5” blue/green (angel dress) 3 ½” x 4 ½” white (wings) 1” x 2 ½” yellow (trumpet) 1 ¼” x 2 ½” gold (moon) Three 1 ½” x 2” light, med., & dark greens (trees) 2 ½” x 3” taupe plaid (house #1) 1 ½” x 2 ¼” dk. stripe or plaid (roof #1) 2” x 2” tiny tan check (house #2) 1 ¼” x 2” brown/black plaid (roof #2) 2” x 3 ½” white/gray (church front) 2” x 3” tan texture (church side) 1 ½” x 2” dk plaid (church roof) 1 ½” x 2” black (doors) Embroidery floss for appliqué and embroidery

Instructions: Measure and cut background 12 ½” x 12 ½”. Note that you can cut the background 13” x 13”, and trim it down to size after appliquing is complete, but keep this in mind so appliques don’t get too close to edges of block. Cut out patterns for left hill, right hill, and the two ground pieces. Tape the two ground pieces together as noted on pattern. Pin pattern pieces face down to the wrong side of the appropriate cotton fabrics. Cut out pieces, adding 1/4“seam allowance to all edges. With paper pattern pieces still in place, press seam allowance over to wrong side along top curved edges of all three pieces, using pattern piece as a pressing guide (you may want to clip curves on seam allowance first). Unpin and remove paper patterns. Mark the lettering on to the left and right hills: I did this by first tracing over the lettering on the pattern with a Sharpie marker to make it darker. I then taped the pattern to a sunny window, lined up the fabric for the hill (unfold top seam allowance if necessarily) over the pattern, and traced the lettering with a chalk pencil. Repeat with second hill piece. Once I was satisfied, I used a permanent Pigma pen (size .02 or .03) to lightly trace over the chalk lines. This gives me a nice, thin line to stitch over, and won’t fade or wear away. Or use whatever method you prefer to mark the lettering. In any case, be sure to keep seam allowances in mind! Place ground wrong side down onto right side of background, matching raw edges of ground to bottom edge of background. Slide right hill piece into place, tucking bottom edge under ground piece. Repeat with left hill, overlapping right hill. Pin all pieces into position.

Note that I do not usually use fusible web when I appliqué with wool (if you do, you will have to reverse the pieces). In this case however, I used it on the fabric for the angels’ faces, hands, and feet since I am using cotton for these appliqués. I also used it for the trumpet since the pattern was very thin at one end of the trumpet. Following manufacturers directions, prep these pieces with Heat & Bond lite, or something similar. Cut the remainder of the appliqués from wool as noted on the patterns. Using the cover photo as a guide, and the dotted lines on the patterns (indicating where pieces overlap), position the appliqués on the background. Shift things around as necessary to be sure everything fits and is to your liking. The hill pieces can be moved around if necessary as well. Be sure to keep the ¼” seam allowance around the edge of the block in mind. When satisfied, it’s a good idea to snap a photo with your phone. Remove the appliqué pieces and set them aside (put them in a baggie so you don’t lose any). Blindstitch the top edges of both hills and the ground in place to the background. To reduce thickness, trim away background fabric from behind hills and ground. Iron prepared background, using sizing (NOT starch) to stiffen fabric slightly. Stay stitch around block 1/8” from raw edges. Referring to cover photo (or your phone pic), return appliqués to background and pin in place. Fuse angels’ heads, hands, and feet in place, as well as trumpet. Blanketstitch appliqués in place with two or three strands of matching embroidery floss (use 2 strands for small pieces, and 3 for large). For angels’ head, hands, and feet, whipstitch with one strand of matching floss. Complete embroidery as noted on pattern pieces and guides, using stitch, color, and number of strands of floss as noted. If you are unfamiliar with a stitch, Google it. Tip: for the wreath on the church front and in the angel’s hands, use a circle template to trace the appropriate sized circle to embroider. Stitch lettering as well. Lightly press completed block and trim up edges if necessary.
