The film industry translates certain current trends in giant blockbusters like James Bond’s latest movie Skyfall. The

distrust and deep hesitations towards the beloved character “M” (Judi Dench), is one of the storylines that

is being shown from the position of James Bond, but also from the standpoint of M’s supervisors. Falsifying documents, lies and withholding details are some

important insights that cause the waning faith in James Bond, M and the authorities.

2.POLITICS

Governments and authorities are in difficult positions. The enduring economical crisis, our new harsh reality, is

defused by severe austerity measures. This affects citizens hard and deep. Politicians get cornered,

constantly balancing between getting accused of not listening to the people and populism.

Trust levels are subsiding. Add to that the growing knowledge and transparency in all layers of society and one can imagine the risk of a societal crisis. Measures

are upon hand. But also the risk of pseudo-transparency has to be avoided.

Still, the message displayed by street artist Banksy is undeniably evident: “if you repeat a lie often enough, it

becomes politics.”

3.TOO BEAUTIFUL

TO WEAR A&F

Abercrombie & Fitch caused an outrage after CEO Mike Jeffries made the following statement: “In every school there are the cool and popular kids and then there are

the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids. (…) A lot of them don’t fit that category and hence should

not be wearing our clothes. Does this make us exclusionary? Absolutely!”

In another statement the CEO stated: “I would rather burn our unsold apparel than give it to homeless people”, a quote that was one step too far, in the eyes of a group

of activists. The video statement in which they handed out A&F t-shirts to homeless people, received millions of

views in 2013. A small Dutch t-shirt company tapped into the

discussion, by making t-shirts with the slogan “Too Beautiful to Wear A&F” as a Cool spin-off. If bad publicity

exists, A&F can be considered a good case.

Online relationships are as common as dating in real life. But a profile picture is still a profile picture, so you can

never be sure about the authenticity until you meet your match in real life. But what if nobody ever meets your

expectations? That is the moment where the people from MTV’s Catfish come in hand.

The reporters go after the “online person”, to reveal their real identity to the public. Sometimes it is the same

person shown in the pictures, more often it is an imposter. Which perfectly suits today’s culture of distrust.

The Internet can never be trusted…

Whistle-blowers can be seen as friend or foe. Some people see famous whistle-blowers Edward Snowden,

Bradley Manning and Julian Assange as heroes for bringing out the truth for everybody to see. Others speak of the highest form of treachery by exposing secret data

to everyone who wants to see it.Apart from the with-or-against-discussion, the increasing amount of information available will lead to more anger,

distrust and cynicism in the years to come.
