My Experience This summer, my family and I took a trip to St.

Louis to visit the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Anheuser-Busch offers a family-friendly tour of the Brewery that shows the history of Budweiser, and how the beer is made.

Questions that Arose How long does it take for the beer

process? How much beer is packaged in one year? What ingredients are necessary to make

the beer? How many different kinds of beer are

made at the Brewery? How many different stages does the beer

have to go through, before it is a finished product?

History of Anheuser-Busch Brewery

In 1857, Adolphus Busch, the second youngest of 22 children, immigrated to the United States from Germany, began working as a clerk on the riverfront in St. Louis and later formed a successful brewery supply company.

History of Anheuser-Busch Brewery

Eberhard Anheuser purchased a struggling St. Louis brewery in 1860 and renamed it E. Anheuser and Co. He soon met Adolphus and introduced him to his daughter, Lilly. A year later, Adolphus Busch married Lilly Anheuser and in 1864 joined his father-in-law's brewery as a salesman, later becoming a partner and finally president of the company. In 1869, he purchased half ownership in the brewery.

History of Anheuser-Busch Brewery

In 1876, he and his friend, Carl Conrad, created Budweiser—using time-consuming, traditional methods and only the finest barley malt, hops, and rice. Budweiser was a lager beer that succeeded beyond anyone's expectations. The company was renamed Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association in 1879, and Adolphus became president the following year. He continued as president for 33 years and is considered to be the founder of our company.

How long does it take for the beer process?

For the complete brewing process, the beer takes about one month until it is completely finished and ready for packaging.

How much beer is packaged in one year at

the Brewery? At the St. Louis Brewery, over 14 Million barrels are packaged

each year!

Anheuser-Busch offers over 70 types of beer products.

Anheuser-Busch makes both alcoholic beer and non-alcoholic beer.

How many different stages does the beer have to go through, before it is a finished product?

The beer process has to go through seven stages before it is a finished product.

The seven stages are Milling, Mashing, Straining, Brew Kettle, Primary Fermentation, Beechwood Lagering, and Finishing.

STAGE 1: Milling

Barley Malt and Rice are ground and precisely weighed.

STAGE 2: Mashing

Barley Malt and Rice are mixed with water; Natural Malt enzymes break down the starch from the grains into fermentable sugars.

STAGE 3: Straining

The combined grain mash is strained, leaving a sugar-

rich, amber liquid called wort.

STAGE 4: Brewkettle

Hops are added to the boiling wort in the brewkettle.

STAGE 5: Primary Fermentation

The wort is cooled and clarified, and the yeast is added; for six days the yeast ferments the wort to beer.

STAGE 6: Beechwood Lagering

During lagering, the beer is naturally carbonated and lagered on beechwood chips for several weeks to mature the flavor of the beer.

STAGE 7: Finsihing The beer is chillproofed

and filtered for clarification before being released for packaging into bottles, cans, and draught kegs.

Following the chillproofing, the beer is stored in settling tanks at 32° for 2 days to complete settling. It is then given a final filtering.

Working Together

Each part of the brewing process is very critical.

Everything in each of the seven stages must be working properly for successful distribution.
