ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION

Page 2: Animal Experimentation

There are extremely different perspectives when looking at animal testing

A proper compromise would involve a set of measures being put in place in order to secure the future use of animals in research

INTRODUCTION

Page 3: Animal Experimentation

One perspective is that any type of experimentation performed on any type of animal is cruel and unethical while also being executed without proper constraints. With this being said, animal experimentation does aid the advancement in the world of science while allowing investigation into scientific questions. Therefore a proper compromise would involve a set of measures being put in place in order to secure the future use of animals in research.

THESIS

Page 4: Animal Experimentation

Cruel and unethical to animals

Animals rarely serve as good models for the human bodyCondition of animals does not add up to real life scenarios

Executed without proper restraints

Test drugs on humans anywayAnimal Welfare Act- allows animals to be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, and more

AGAINST ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION

Page 5: Animal Experimentation

Most of the drugs used on animals have different responses from those on humans

Penicillin kills guinea pigs but is inactive in rabbits

Aspirin kills cats and causes birth defects in rats, mice, guinea pigs, dogs, and monkeys

Morphine, a depressant in humans, stimulates goats, cats, and horses

EXAMPLES

Page 6: Animal Experimentation

Advancement due to animal experimentation We are affected every day

by at least one thing that has been influenced by animal testing

Many of the things we take for granted would not exist

Allows investigation of scientific questions Medical field impacted by

use of animals- discoveries and treatments

PRO ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION

Page 7: Animal Experimentation

Discovery of diabetes cure by dog experimentation with insulin

Treatment of rabies, arthritis, whooping cough, leprosy, diphtheria, rubella, measles, and anthrax due to animal experimentation

EXAMPLES

Page 8: Animal Experimentation

Improve conditions for lab animals

Reduce the number of animals used in experiment

Investigate alternative approach

MEDIATIONThere is a “brighter future” for all animals and animal activists due to the “cutting-edge” technology we have today, such as “human clinical and epidemiological studies, human tissue- and cell-based research methods, cadavers, sophisticated high-fidelity human patient simulators and computational models that are more reliable, more precise, less expensive, and more humane than animal experiments,” (Animal).

“Overall Comments: Tommie, as you see from the Response Team report below, I’m not the only one you’ve impressed with your Mediation. What immediately strikes a teacher is the PowerPoint’s firm grounding in research; that list of sources at the end (for both pictures and texts) sheds light on the detail that came before, the slides of “Examples,” for instance — both for animal testing and against. The quotation cited in the “Mediation” slide, too, has a mature balance. Really, you’re good at this. A or 95.”

OVERALL COMMENTS

Page 13: Animal Experimentation

Response Team: Carly Colosimo, Derrick LawrenceSummary:

“Tommie presented both the pros and cons about animal experimentation. She first looked at the cons of animal experimentation, stating that it is both cruel and unethical to animals and executed without proper restraints. An example she listed of not using restraints included starvation. Tommie also pointed out that the reaction of a drug in an animal's body is quite different from the reaction in a human, meaning animal testing is unreliable. The pro animal experimentation side believes there has been advancement due to experimentation, such as the discovery of diabetes cure by dog experimentation with insulin. Her mediation suggested that there should be improved conditions for lab animals, reduce the number of animals used in experiments and experiment in alternate approaches.”

RESPONSE TEAM REPORTSUMMARY

Response Team: Carly Colosimo, Derrick LawrenceCritique:

“Tommie had very good examples of what animal experimentation has discovered and informative easy read slides to follow. However, I would have like to see what is happening with animal experimentation today versus the past…has anything changed? Is it still effective? Are there any restrictions now? But overall, the mediation was well thought out because she noted how animal experimentation is needed but not in such cruel matters. She played neutral researching her topic just how a mediator should, and presented very comfortably.”
