A Day in the Life... Now for something a little different, this issue is dedicated to

the staff that make everything we do possible! With the new

year, the National Animal Control Association (NACA) updat-

ed their logo. NACA views the role of our profession as being

first responders, and the new logo reflects this vision. The

addition of the blue line not only draws a connection to the

law enforcement community who is currently becoming

more involved in animal-related crimes, but also connects

the professionals in the animal care and control field to their

law enforcement capacity in addressing those same crimes.

Law Enforcement Officers make numerous public contacts

during their shifts, but Animal Control Officers make four

times as many contacts during the same period. Read on to

get a look into the day in the life of Animal Services...

You may remember little Nick from our last newsletter. He was an

adoption success story for 2019. (Nick is the white pittie pup in the

photo to the left.) Nick’s story did not start out this promising. (Photo

below.) One Saturday, Animal Services Officer, Meagan McCarrell, re-

ceived an after-hours call concerning an emaciated pup. She picked up

the pup, and he was immediately taken to see a vet. It was soon dis-

covered that Nick was suffering from a stomach infection. With a little

TLC from vet and shelter staff, Nick was soon ready for his new home!

In the Field...

You never know what you will see while

responding to calls in Washington County.

It may be difficult to tell because there is

nothing to reference for size, but these

are miniature cows!

Animal Services Manager, Allison Harper,

picks up a stray Chihuahua called in by a

Brenham family that found her wandering

on the street. We are happy to report her

owner came forward and took her home!

In the Field cont.

Every now and again we interact with wildlife…

ASO McCarrell found herself in a situation where

she had to release a skunk from a trap! Fortunately

Pepé Le Pew did not spray; he happily made his way

to the creek upon his release!

Our Animal Services Officers

responded to 1,190 calls for service in 2019!

Undoubtedly if you follow our Face-

book page you know the story of

Ghost! We shared this photo to

show that it’s not only our ASOs out

in the field… Kennel Tech, Tanya

Beierle, also got the chance to go

out on a “Ghost Call” when we first

caught sightings of Ghost in August

of 2019.

Meanwhile at the Shelter...

Left: Animal Services Officer, Craig Reagan, puts away a

food order which was recently delivered by Hill’s Science

Diet. Our average food order consists of 1,000 pounds of

food!

Below: Kennel Tech, Sabrina Hill, medicates approximately

40 dogs during an outbreak of Mycoplasma.

Right: Kennel Tech, Tanya, deep cleans cat cages

in our receiving area after all the cats were

moved to the adoption area.

Left: Kennel Tech, Brendon Watson, disinfects and

cleans dog runs. Each day all of our kennels are cleaned

with disinfectant to prevent disease.

visit with Ghost! They also brought him home-

made treats!

In 2019 shelter staff ad-

ministered approximately

350 heartworm tests and

280 FIV/FeLV tests!

and 23 puppies were born

at the shelter!
