Animals in Winter STEM / Crafts
STEM // Guess the Hibernating Animal
Print out images of animals that hibernate, then play a guessing game with
the children. Close your eyes, select an animal, and place it on your
flannelboard. Either keep your eyes closed, or stand behind the flannelboard
so that you can’t see which animal you selected. Play a 20 questions game
with the children to figure out which hibernating animal you selected.

STEM & CRAFT // Tracks in the Snow Print some animal tracks onto some sturdy cardstock, then cut the prints
out to make stencils (be sure to label the animal on each stencil). Tape
white paper to a table and invite children to color in the stencils, making
animal footprints in the snow. To encourage writing, they can write the
animal’s name by each footprint.

STEM & CRAFT // Pinecone Birdfeeder
This is a fun (and messy) craft project that also teaches children about what
birds like to eat. All you need is a pinecone (or bagel), peanut butter, spoon,
paper plate, bird seed, and twine/ribbon. Spread peanut butter on the pinecone,
roll it in bird seed, then wrap twine around the stem to hang outside. You’ll
need to be careful about messes and food allergies (telling children not to eat
the peanut butter will help, but you never know), but overall this is a fun craft
that children will really enjoy.
