INTRODUCTION
There are many species of plants and animals in the rainforest
A common estimate is that
approximately half of the wold’s
animal species live in rainforests.

JAGUARS
• Jaguars are the largest of South America’s big cats and the third largest cats in the world.
• The name jaguar comes from the Native American word yaguar, which means “ he who kills with one leap”.
Their fur is usually tan or orange with black spots called rosettes because they are shaped like roses.

TIGERS• Tigers are the
largest wild cats in the world. Adults can weigh up to 363kg- that’s about the same weight as ten ten year olds!
Tigers are carnivores, eating only meat. They mainly feed on large mammals such as deer and boar.

ORANGUTANS• Orangutans have
thin, shaggy, reddish brown hair.
• Most orangutans are four to five feet long, some can reach a length of six feet.
• An estimated 19,000 to 25,000 live in the wild and another 900 live in captivity.
• In the wild, orangutans live for about 35 to 40 years.
• Orangutans feed mainly on fruits.

GORILLAS• There are only
about 700 mountain gorillas and they live high in the mountains in two protected parks in Africa.
• An adult male gorilla is called a silverback because of the distinctive silvery fur growing on their back and hips.
• Gorillas are herbivores which means they eat greenery and vegetation.

TOUCANS
• Toucans live in the rainforests of South America and Central America.
• Toucans eat both plant and animal foods. Their diet consists of birds eggs, insects, fruit, reptiles and rodents.
