From the Director Just as Sir Henry Baskerville inherits both a manor house and a deadly curse from his

ancestors, so I inherited a love of classic films from my parents. My mother was a great fan

of stars like Gene Kelly and Cary Grant, and my father was fond of comic actors like Laurel

and Hardy and George Tobias. Growing up I found myself enthralled by Errol Flynn crossing

swords with Basil Rathbone in The Adventures of Robin Hood, and Danny Kaye matching wits

with Rathbone in The Court Jester. And I was endlessly fascinated by Rathbone's schooling

of Nigel Bruce in the fine art of deductive reasoning in any of fourteen films in which they

starred as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

Years later - at Christmas time about ten years ago - I asked my family to give me gifts that

reflected things they loved rather than things they thought I would want. My mother bought

me a collection of recordings from old-time radio shows. There were comedy shows, of course,

from the likes ofJack Benny and Fred Allen, and dramas such as the classic 1938 broadcast of

War of the Worlds. There were mysteries, too, including Sherlock Holmes stories starring Basil

Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, reprising their popular movie roles. In those recordings, with the

pictures stripped away, the true essence of what makes the stories so compelling was revealed:

brilliant, evocative writing and the extraordinary vocal talents of the actors - ably augmented

by a dynamic musical score.

I used these remarkable pieces of recorded entertainment as a touchstone for the design and

direction of this production. While the merit of an iconic and lasting literary effort can be

measured by the compulsion for subsequent generations tore-imagine it in a contemporary

context - the story of 'The Hound' has been filmed no less than two-dozen times - there is

still great pleasure to be found in simply listening to talented actors speaking beautiful words.

Playwright Tim Kelly found a way to arrange Conan Doyle's classic words for the stage, and

now the cast, staff and crew of A2CT's The Hound of the Baskervilles take great pride and

pleasure in presenting them to you. Enjoy!

The Cast SARAH JOYCE BURGIN (LADY AGATHA) is origi­nally from Yorkshire, England and is appearing in an A2CT production for the first time. After training at the University of London and the East IS Acting School, Sarah has appeared in Fringe theatre productions in London, regional England and New York, including Midsummer Night's Dream,Macbeth, Hellmouth and The Balcony. More recently she combines rais­ing three children with PhD studies whilst living both in Italy and Ann Arbor.

BRITTANY BATELL (PERKINS) tried out for the part of the hound, but apparently just wasn't hairy enough. Nev­ertheless, she's happy to be a part of this show, and adds it to her A2CT show list which includes Impossible Marriage, Stage Door, The Tempest (same director!} and others. She'd like to thank her dad and Monty Python's Flying Circus for schooling her on goofiness and Eoglish accents.

JON ELLIOTT (JOHN WATSON M.D.) has been in many local productions as an actor, director and crew mem­ber, with the generous support of his family. Previous favorite roles include Fagin in Oliver!, the Manager in Damn Yankees, Gabe in the award-winning Dinner With Friends and as Di­rector of Footloose,Annie Get Your Gun ,Inherit The Wind and Moon Over Buffalo. He was the first winner of Ann Arbor Civ­ic Theatre's Play-Writing Competition for his work Heartland Tales. He wishes to thank his wonderful family- wife Alexis and daughters Melissa and Jennifer- and kudos to a fine en­semble effort from this cast, as well as the generous efforts of the production staff, particularly David, Lyn and Mark. It's been a great trot on the moors!

TOM UNDERWOOD (SHERLOCK HOLMES) says it's no mystery that Tom began consorting with Ann Arbor Civic Theatre back in 1990 with The Mousetrap. Since then, his credits read like a literary bookshelf, including, Oliver Twist, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Moby Dick, Brave New World Revisited, Medea, and Borstal Boy. Often melodramatic, but hopefully never dull, Tom enjoys the challenge of bringing classic characters to life. Recently, he seems to have an iron­clad alibi, appearing as King Berenger in Exit the King before several wituesses.

BREEDA KELLY MILLER (MRS. BARRYMORE) makes her debut with A2CT tonight. Her most memorable role was as the Wicked Witch of the West in a local production of The Wizard of Oz. Breeda has also appeared in The Miracle Worker, Cheaper by the Dozen and The Music Man. She would like to thank her family for helping her reach her "woman on the edge" state of mind for this performance. When not on stage, Breeda acts as General Manager and Event Planner for Food Art Catered Affairs in Ann Arbor. She also wishes to thank her husband, Jim (the saint) for all his love and support.

NICK BOYER (SIR HENRY BASKERVILLE) is in his very first role with A2CT. But, I digress. It has been nearly a decade between roles for the 28 year old. Although Nick stud­ied Theatre Arts while attending Eastern Michigan University,

he did not participate in many stage plays. The native of To­ledo, OH began acting at the age of II with roles in Peter Pan and A Christmas Carol. However, sports and school began moving into the forefront of his life and it wasn't until Nick's freshman year that he re-discovered the acting bug. With the support of a few professors, and his fellow students of Cobra Kai Karate, Nick decided to make Theatre Arts his minor to go with his Broadcasting Major. 6 years later, Nick is extremely excited about his opportunity to work with the cast and crew of Hound. Nick would like to thank his friends, family, and the secret society of the Stonecutters for their moral and vocal support. And ... San Dimas High School Football Rules!

CHARLES SUTHERLAND (BARRYMORE) is pleased to be working with David Andrews again since The Real Thing,H2$, and 1776!. He is grateful to A2CT for all the years of fantasy theatre. For years,A2CT was the biggest and best in town! He has had amazing opportunities to act, direct, design and produce. Imagine being directed, choreographed, and showcased by Jim Posante in some of his favorite shows! He produced all the shows in our first Main Street Theatre for the 10 years there. He designed and built our first show, The Miss Firecracker Contest in our Platt Road Theatre. He won Best Ac­tor for Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Currently he has been performing and designing props for the Performance Network Theatre. He is grateful to family, friends, and the local theatre community for its support dur­ing the last two years. Jim is always in his thoughts.

DANIELLE NICHOLLS (KATHY STAPLETON) is excited to perform in her first A2CT production! She is no stranger to the stage, however, with past credits including And Then There Were None, The Butler Did It,Again!,A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Matchmaker, Pippin, and Footloose. In her offstage life, Danielle enjoys working with children and families as a clinical social worker. She would like to thank Moragh and the fuzzballs for their patience and support.

DAVID "MUMS" WIDMAYER (JACK STAPLETON) was first introduced to Sherlock Holmes in the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation holodeck episode, Elementary. Dear Data. Sometimes, he pretends on stage that he's actually a Star Fleet Officer just blowing off some steam. He's not sure anyone else appreciates it when he yells, "Computer, freeze program!" instead of, "Line!" In his spare time, he enjoys "nerding it up" and scaring away potential dates.

ANNA PAONE (LAURA LYONS) is a U-M freshman and aspiring Biblical Studies major very happy to be in her first A2CT production. Previous shows include Pride and Prejudice (Mary), Cheaper by the Dozen (Anne), and Our Town (Si Crowell), all in central NJ, from whence she hails. She thanks her loving family for making college possible, as well as her Michigan relatives for their hospitality. Love to God, the BVM, the saints, and AJ, EA, MM. and LW.

The Production Staff DAVID ANDREWS (DIRECfOR) returns to the A2CT director's chair following his highly-lauded if little-seen Studio Series production of Exit the King in October 2008. He has directed half a dozen productions over the past half-dozen years, and has appeared on stage in two and a half-dozen more - in this millennium alone. As either actor or director you never quite know where he will pop up, although lately he has primarily pigeon-holed himself among the comic­patter-baritone roles of W.S. Gilbert. Here he joins Gilbert's contemporary, A. Conan Doyle, for the long. strange trip from the streets of foggy old London town to the even foggier moors along the River Dart

MARK BAT ELL (PRODUCER, OTHER STUFF) would like to encourage all of you to join A2CT and become part of this fantastic organization. Whatever your talents, there is a place for you here. Brittany, it's all because of you!

LYN DAVIDGE (ASSISTANT DIRECfOR) ventures backstage again, having found the best show possible for her first assistant director gig. Many thanks to David for this wonderful opportunity and to this awesome cast and crew for making every rehearsal a pleasure. Lyn has handled props for other shows, tracking down cool things like umbrella clotheslines. She ran sound once, too, for a company that may not want to be named because- well, never mind. Suffice to say that Lyn was cast in their next show, just to keep her a long way from the booth!

THOM "TJ" JOHNSON (STAGE MANAGER) has been involved with A2CT since the early 80's as an actor, director, stage manager and lighting designer. His last stage managing effort was with A2CT's Lysistrata (although he played the Stage Manager in Our Town). He directed this seasons Picasso at the Lapin Agile, designed the lights for Impossible Marriage and worked back stage for Nine. When outside the theater (those rare moments) he works for U of M, plays softball in the summer, is co-owner of the Cracker Jacks fantasy baseball team, and plays trivia all year long. Thanks to all, especially JAC.

BOB WITTERSHEIM (SOUND DESIGN & BOARD OP) is thrilled to be working on his first A2CT mainstage production. Previous Sound Design credits include Before it Hits Home (A2CT Studio Series), Dis-Lodged (Second City), and nearly a dozen shows for PTD Productions in Ypsilanti, most recently Auntie Marne. Bob has been seen onstage with co-creator Sara Young as one half of the sketch comedy duo Back in Blackout. Bob thanks David, Mark, his family, and M.

SUSIE BERNEIS (COSTUMER) considers herself a Baker Street Irregular of the most irregular sort and is delighted to be costuming Sherlock & Co. The Hound of the Baskervilles is her sole costuming venture this season as she has been involved in The Producers (as one of the delightfully dirty old ladies) and has been supervising the costume collection in general.
