AGRICULTURE GUIDE

The Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation manages and promotes agricultural and environmental programs on behalf of Anne Arundel County. These programs are part of The AAEDC mission to serve business needs and to increase the County’s economic base through job growth and investment. For additional information on agriculture programs in Anne Arundel County please contact Lisa Barge, Agricultural Marketing & Development Manager at the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation, e-mail [email protected] or visit the website at www.aaedc.org/initiatives.

The Anne Arundel Soil Conservation District carries out programs, both voluntary and mandated, which implement the policy of the State to provide for the conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources. The efforts of the District focus on the environmental effects of two diverse but equally essential areas of the local economy.

In agriculture, the District emphasizes the importance of soil conservation and water quality, striving to have voluntary soil and water conservation plans for all working farms. These plans help farmers optimize productivity while safeguarding their surroundings against the potential impact of poor land management. Farmers are advised in areas that include preventing fertilizers and pesticides from draining into nearby tributaries through the use of innovative methods like cover crops and shoreline buffers. The plans also aid farmers with issues related to conservation crop rotation and residue management.

In the area of urban development, the AASCD reviews all sediment and erosion control plans for pending construction projects in Anne Arundel County to ensure that developers take the necessary steps to manage runoff during construction to control soil erosion.

IntroductionThe Harvest Guide has been prepared by the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation and the Anne Arundel County Soil Conservation District to help you identify sources for local products and services within Anne Arundel County. This guide will help you locate and purchase agricultural commodities directly from Anne Arundel County Farms. Farm services and farm agencies as well as farm supply and implement dealers located in the region are also listed. The guide also identifies sources to purchase locally grown produce, meats and other products. Restaurants that use local ingredients in their recipes are also listed. The online guide updated quarterly can be found at www.aaedc.org/initiatives.

Thanks for Buying Local Products! In the United States, food travels approximately 1,500 miles from the farm to your plate. Food grown in your community was probably picked within a day or two of your purchase, making it fresher and healthier for your family.

When you buy from a local farmer you are supporting that farm and your local economy, preserving the agricultural heritage of Anne Arundel County, and keeping farms financially viable. So remember, Get Fresh and Buy Local.

Be a part of our Harvest Guide! If you own or manage a farm, farm stand, market, store, restaurant or other farm related business we would like to include you in our guide. There is no cost or obligation to be listed. The guide will be updated quarterly, so it is never too late to be listed. For additional information call 410-222-7410.
