Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr could not resist a dig at the VAR system
after his team’s win 2-1 over South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday, say-ing the time taken to conf rm his opponents’ goal had unset-tled his team.
The VAR system, which was
introduced at the quarterfinal
stage and is being used in the
competition for the first time,
made its first significant inter-
vention when it overruled a line -
man’s decision to disallow Bon -
gani Zungu’s goal for offside.
“For five minutes we had to
wait, goal or no goal, and that
was hard for my team,” the Ger -
man told reporters.
“The second goal did not go
in for us and then you have seen
this free kick, and this VAR de-
cision – you never know what
can happen with VAR on a free
kick.”
Rohr also praised the char -
acter of his side who came back
from 2-1 down to beat Cam -
eroon 3-2 in the previous round
and grabbed a late winner in
Wednesday’s match.
“Now we are mentally strong
and we were able to come back,”
he said. “The attitude of my
players was wonderful, such a
good relationship with every-
one.”
Rohr recalled when Nigeria
were beaten 2-0 by South Africa
at home in a qualifier for the
tournament two years ago, one
of his first games in charge.
“We had a young team but
this team continued to work
and this result perhaps helped
us to beat in the next game
Nigeria coach criticises VAR delay
Cameroon, who were African
champions, 4-0 in the same
stadium (in a World Cup
qualifier), so we could learn
from this match,” he added.-supersports
Despite initially being ruled offside, VAR overtuned the call and awarded an equalizing goal to Bongani Zungu, drawing South Africa level with Nigeria in their AFCON quarterf nal.
Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel on the club’s pre-
season tour of the US.The 33-year-old France de-
fender is out of contract at the
end of the 2019-20 season and
is a reported target for French
clubs Bordeaux, Rennes and
Lyon.
“We are very disappointed
by Laurent’s actions, which are
against our clear instructions,”
said Arsenal.
“We hope to resolve this mat -
ter and will not be providing any
further comment at this time.”
Bordeaux have reportedly of-
fered Koscielny a three-year deal.
The central defender joined
Arsenal in the summer of 2010
for a fee of around £10m.
He has played 353 times for
the Gunners and won the FA Cup
twice, in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Last season Koscielny played
30 times for the club in all com-
petitions, including one appear-
ance for the under-21 side in the
EFL Trophy. -supersports
