Project Summary ThisproposedresearchrespondstotheurgentneedofunderstandinghowecologicalchangesaffecttheaestheticvalueandtheuserexperienceoftheGreatBarrierReef,andhowthesecouldbemeasuredandmonitoredinacost-effectiveway.Theresearchcapitalisesontwomajortrends,namelypeoples’abilityandwillingnesstosharelargeamountsofinformationthroughvariousonlineplatforms,andrapiddevelopmentincomputingtechnologytostore,processandinterpretthesedata.
Project Description
RESEARCHPROBLEM:
TheAustralianGovernmentisinvestingconsiderableresourcesintoimprovingreefhealthandmonitoringchangesoftheGreatBarrierReef(GBR).Monitoringhowever,iscostlyandthenotionofcitizenscienceisattractingattention.InvolvingpeopleandunderstandingthehumandimensionsoftheReef,includingnaturalbeautyasanintegralpartofheritagevalue,iscriticalinenhancingsupport

forconservation.Tappingintouser-suppliedmaterial,forexamplethroughsocialmedia,reflectsananthropocentricapproachthatacceptsthatbothaestheticandexperientialvaluesareconceptsthatarisefromtheinteractionsbetweennatureandpeople.Buildingonexistingcitizenscienceprograms(e.g.GreatBarrierReefMarineParkAuthority’s(GBRMPA)‘EyeontheReef’),thisresearchdrawsoninformationsharedbyover2.7millionpeoplewhovisittheGBR(GBRPMA,2018)toextractinsightsintoenvironmentalandexperientialattributesoftheGBR.
Theaimofthisprojecttherefore,istointegrateworkonunderstanding,measuringandmappingaestheticvalueoftheGBR,evidentinuser-suppliedimagery,withresearchonmeasuringexperiencevalue,expressedthroughvisitors’sentimentandemotionscontainedinsocialmedia.Whilstitislikelythatchangestotheaestheticvalueaffectvisitorexperienceandsentiment,itisimportanttocapturetheseconstructsseparately.Thereasonforthisisthat,atleastforsomeusergroups,visitorstotheReefcontinuetohaveenjoyableexperiences,eveninthefaceofongoingdeclinesinReefhealthandaestheticvalue.
RESEARCHAPPROACH:
Twopreviouslyfundedprojects(2.3.2and3.2.3)usedBigDataapproachestoassesshowunconventionaldatasources(e.g.Twitter,Facebook,Flickr)canhelpmonitorenvironmentalandaestheticconditionsoftheReef.Usinglanguageprocessingtools(sentimentanalysis),datavisualisation(e.g.heatmaps),deeplearning(automatedspeciesidentification),eyetracking(aestheticrating),andneuralnetworks/AI(automatedbeautyscoringofphotos),thesetwoprojectsdeliveredaninnovativebasisforenhancingcurrentmanagementsystemsoftheGreatBarrierReef.Findingsweresharedwitharangeofkeystakeholders,whoexpressedkeeninterestinfurtheradvancingthislineofresearch.Alistofoutputsisavailableonhttps://www.griffith.edu.au/institute-tourism/our-research/sustainable-tourism-innovation/monitoring-the-great-barrier-reef.
ThisextensionprojectfocusesonunderstandingandmeasuringtwokeyconceptsrelevantforongoingReefprotection,namelythe(underwater)aestheticvalueandtheexperiencevalueoftheReef.Assessmentofchangesinecologicalvalueareoutofscope.Figure1providesanoverviewoftheprojectapproach.

Mostdatarequiredforthisprojectareopensourceandonline.Recentfindingsbythisresearchteamfound,forexample,thatTwitteruserspostedatotalof700,782tweetsfromtheGBRregionfortheperiodfromMarch2016toMarch2018.Ofthese,163,691tweetsrelatedtokeyaspectsoftheReef(e.g.beach,fish,coral).In2016,wedownloaded6,390Flickrimagesthatweretagged‘GBR’.Ofthese,1,440imagescarrieddetailedgeographicmetadata.Inaddition,theextensionresearchprojectwillgeneratenewdata,forexamplefromcontinuingeye-trackingexperimentsbuildingonearlierresearch.WealsocollaboratecloselywiththeCSIROontheircollectionofnewdatafromthose

involvedinReef-relatedactivities(e.g.tourism,citizenscience)andwillensureuseofthesedataaspartoftheBigDataplatform.Severalresearchstepsareproposedtodelivertheoutcomes(Figure1):
1. Aestheticvalue:Furtherimprovementsarerequiredinthreeareas.
a. Whataretheattributesofaestheticvalue?Toverifyandextendearlierfindings(NESP3.2.3and3.2.4)therelevanceofadditionalattributesneedtobetested,inparticularthosethatcoulddetractfromaestheticvalue(e.g.man-madestructures).Further,therobustnessofaestheticattributesacrossdifferentusergroupsneedstobeverified.Inparticular,weproposetouseeye-trackingtechnologyincombinationwithinterviewsfortwokeygroups,namelyIndigenouspeoplesandChinesetourists,tofurtherunderstandperceptionsof‘beauty’andrelevanceofparticularattributes(e.g.charismaticspecies).
b. Toenhanceandimprovetheaccuracyofautomatedaestheticscoring,usingneuralnetworks/AI,more‘trainingmaterial’intheformofratedimagesisrequired.Inparticular,moreimagesthatshow‘ugly’orlessattractiveunderwaterscenesarenecessarytoinformthemachinelearning.Theeye-trackingfindingswillinformtheselectionofadditionalmaterial.WealsoplantousematerialpreviouslyratedinaCSIROsurvey(fromNESPTWQHubProject3.2.4)andmanuallyratedimagesgeneratedthroughthecurrentCSIROproposal(5.6inRPv5).
c. Theprocessofaccessingandstoringlargeamountsofimages(e.g.geo-taggedFlickr)needstobeimprovedinitsefficiency.Inaddition,buy-infromstakeholdergroupsthatarealreadyinvolvedinvariouscitizenscienceprojectswouldbebeneficialtoenhancetheflowofincomingimagesthatcanbeusedforaestheticrating.Dedicatedworkshopswillhelpincreasesupportandlinksystems.Here,wewillcollaboratewithCSIRO.
2. Experiencevalue:Whilstconsiderableprogresshasbeenmadeintermsofcapturingandanalysingsocialmediadata,furtherstepsarerequired.
a. Toimprovetheaccuracyofthesentimentalgorithm,weneedtogeneratedatafromhumanannotation(i.e.coding)regardingsentimentandtargets(i.e.whatisthesocialmediatextabout).Asmallnumberofrelevanttargetsneedtobeagreedonwithstakeholders,forexample‘marinelife’,‘coral’,‘beachenvironment’,‘waterrelated’,and‘touristactivity’.Theannotatedtextwillthenbeusedformachinelearningtoimprovetheaccuracyofthesentimentalgorithmandalsotoproducetarget-specificsentiment.
b. Furtherworkisnecessarytodisaggregatesentimentfromsocialmediaintocategoriesthatareofgreatestrelevancetostakeholders,forexamplebysegmentingdataintogeographiczones,targets(seeabove),andusergroups(e.g.domestic,international,local).Thisprocesswillalsoinvolveconsiderationofothersocialmediasources,includingSinoWeibodata.
3. Systemtrial:Theproposedmeasuresofaestheticandexperientialvaluewillbetestedonaspecificintervention.Morespecifically,andduetorecentGovernmentinvestmentandinterest,thepracticeofcoralrestorationwillbeassessed.
a. Perceptions/Experiences:Sentimentofsocialmediatextrelatedto‘coralrestoration’,expressedinvariousonlinemedia,willbecomparedwithdatathathasinformationobtainedininterviewswithvisitorswhoexperiencedcoralrestorationprojects.
b. Aesthetics:Restoredcoralwillbetestedbyusingrelevantimageryinadedicatedeye-trackingexperimenttoassesspeople’sinterest/attention(e.g.fixationtime),beautyrating,andemotions(e.g.facialexpressionandselfreport).TheimagesofrestoredcoralwillalsobetestedwiththeAIautomatedsystemtocomparebeautyscores.
PRIORRESEARCHANDLINKTOOTHERRESEARCH:
ThisprojectbuildsonNESP-fundedworkthroughprojects2.3.2,3.2.3and3.2.4.Italsolinkstoproject3.2.2.ontheHumanDimensionsoutcomes,objectivesandtargetsintheReef2050Long-TermSustainabilityPlan,specificallythesocio-economicandheritagemonitoring.
ThisprojectwillbenefitfromtheTrISMA(TrackingInfrastructureforSocialMediaAnalysis),ajointprojectbyseveralAustralianuniversitiesandledbytheQUTDigitalObservatory.TrISMAwillfacilitate

cost-effectiveaccesstolargevolumesofAustraliansocialmediadatathatwillcomplementdatafrominternationalusersalreadystreamedandstoredatGriffith’sBigDatalab.
Synergieswithseveralcitizen-scienceapproachesthroughtheNESPCleanAirandUrbanLandscapesHubarepossible(https://www.nespurban.edu.au/participate/).Also,therecouldbeafuturelinkwithProject6.5(Citizenscience)intheThreatenedSpeciesRecoveryHub.
INFORMINGDECISIONMAKING:
TheunderstandingofaestheticvaluewillhelpReefmanagersandthoseworkinginthetourismindustryintheirdevelopmentofeducationalandpromotionalmaterial(includingforReefprotectioncampaigns).Already,the3.2.3researchfoundthatcertainattributes(e.g.vividlycolouredfish)significantlyaddtoperceivedbeautyoftheReef.
TheAI-basedsystemwilldeliveramechanismformonitoringaestheticvalueatalargegeographicscale,asitrespondstoimagespostedonlineoraddedmanuallytothedatabase.Thedevelopmentofafinaltool,forexampleareal-timemapthatvisualisesbeautyscores,canbeundertakenandimplementedaspartoftheReefIntegratedMonitoringandReportingProgram(RIMReP)program.Wesuggestthatthecombinationofmanualmonitoringatselectedindicatorsites(CSIRO)withautomatedmonitoring–thatisalsoconstantlyimprovedthroughtheuseofnewtrainingmaterial(i.e.theannotatedphotossuppliedbyCSIRO)–providesarobustandcost-effectivemechanism.
Similarly,theabilitytomeasureandmonitorsentiment(aggregateandforuser-definedsegments)providesintelligenceonhowusersperceivetheReef,whattheytalkabout,andwhetherthereareanyparticularissues.Measuringsentimentinadditiontoaestheticvalueisofcriticalimportancetooperatorsandrelatedcommunitieswhorelyonpeoplehavinga‘goodexperience’asasummaryindicatorofdestinationsuccess.ThefactthattheproposedsystemstoresallReef-relevanttweetsinadatabaserepresentsaddedvalueasdataareavailableforanyadditionalextraordinaryanalyses.Already,wehavehadinterestinthedatasetbyarangeofReefstakeholders,forexampleinrelationtothecoralbleachingevensin2016/17.
NESP2017ResearchPriorityAlignment
• ThisproposedresearchalignswithseveraloftheNESPprioritiesandcross-cuttingissues.Firstofall,Priority1onclimateriskisexplicitlytakenintoconsiderationbythesystematictestingofdifferentlevelsofecosystemhealth(includinginparticularcoral)onaestheticandexperiencevalues.ClimatechangeimpactsandwaterqualityissuesarethetwodriversthataffecttheattributesthathavealreadybeenrecognisedasbeingintegraltotheseReefvaluesandourresearchwillshefurtherlightontherelativeimportanceofattributesacrossdiverseusergroups.Priority2specificallyaddressessocialandeconomicvaluesandtheseareattheheartofourresearch.Theresearchwillbeparticularlyrelevanttothetourismindustryandallcommunitiesthatdependonit.
• TheresearchsupportsseveralNESPTWQhubpriorities.Atitscore,understandingandmeasuringaestheticandexperiencevalueslinkstothenotionofcitizenscienceandinvolvingpeopleintheprocessofgeneratingdataandincreasingawareness(3.6).Italsoteststheimpactsofaspecificmanagementintervention,namelycoralrestoration(3.1),onsocio-economicvalues(3.4).Finally,ithelpsincreaseunderstandingofhowsomeofthecumulativepressuresthatmanifestindecliningReefhealthvalueimpactaestheticandexperiencevalues–informationthatisimportanttodesigneffectivemanagementoftheasset(1.4).
PATHWAY TO IMPACT Outcomes
ThisprojectwillfinalisetwokeymethodsformeasuringhumandimensionsoftheReef,namelyaestheticandexperiencevalues.Itwilldeliverthecapabilitytoscorelargevolumesofdatatoderiveindicatorsof‘beauty’andsentiment.Implementingthemethodswilldeliverthefollowingoutcomes:

ACategoryTwoprojectisaresearchprojectthathasafieldcomponentwithintheproject,butdoesnothavedirectcollaborationwithanIndigenouscommunity,organisation,grouporindividual.AspertheobjectivesoftheIndigenousEngagementandParticipationStrategy(IEPS),aCategoryTwoprojectwillbeexpectedto:
• ClearlyidentifyhowtheresearchwillberelevantandofbenefittoIndigenouscommunitiesand/ororganisationsandifnotwhy.
• EnsuretheresearchisconductedaccordingtothehighestethicalstandardsandrespectsIndigenousprioritiesandvalues.
• ExploreopportunitiesforIndigenousengagement,employment,skillstransfer,sharingofknowledgeandtheincreaseofculturalawarenessamongstallparties.
