It’s that time of year again! We will be collecting necessary items for migrant workers and delivering to a designated camp site for distribution. Your generosity throughout the year has been incredible. We will be collecting items, starting on Monday, February 3rd through the Friday, February 13th. In early February we will meet at the Café of Life to sort 50 pound bags of rice, beans, masa and sugar. Last year we distributed 120 bags of the above items to the migrant families. We also accept checks, in any amount, as donations. With this money, we are able to purchase the 50 pound bags of food. You will receive a receipt for your donation. WE WILL ACCEPT WHATEVER YOU WISH TO DONATE ON OR OFF THIS LIST. The list of items needed will be posted on the Bulletin Boards. If it is more convenient for you, we will gladly come to your residence to pick up your donated items. The Café of Life is providing a truck to pick up your donated items and will distribute them at the camp. All items can be new or gently used. The need never seems to diminish. The young and old, who work in the fields, are grateful for whatever they receive. It is heart warming and a little sad at the same time. Your donations have truly lightened their load. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions. THANK YOU BAY FOREST! YOU’RE THE BEST! Vince and Kathryn Corbino 239-594-5345 Please join us any and every Wednesday for the Sunset Social. New Horizons is non-profit and non-denominational volunteer opportunity. It’s after hours (3:30 - 5 pm) for immigrant children. We help them in two areas, English & Math. ANYONE who cares about children and enriching children lives, as well as the joy of giving the gift of time can contribute. Grades: 1st and 3rd - 5th. You could work one late afternoon per week or once every 2 weeks. One resident volunteer expressed how “It is the happiest of times that he spends in Florida”.

Another quote from seasonal resident,

Pat O”Rourke:

“Volunteering for New Horizons gives and allows me to be generous with my abundance of time. I can see that I’m becoming part of a community of people, staff and volunteers, who are creating positive change in the lives of these children. Yet I leave each time feeling I receive far more than I give! I’m grateful for the opportunity to interact with the other volunteers and, of course, the beautiful children involved in the program.”

Ahoy mates and welcome aboard to a new boating season. We had a great new beginning last year and are looking forward to

good times on the water again this season. Due to some personal issues, we may not make it to Naples in February.

We would ask any members of the group that could volunteer some time to get in touch with me so that we can put forth a plan of action.

I feel that the Boaters Club had a good first year and am confident that it is a worthwhile venture. I am sure that all our members were happy with our little outings. The rental

companies were easy to deal with, the boats were in good shape, the weather cooperated, the dolphins and pelicans enjoyed our company, the snacks and beverages were all

excellent and well-received and all the folks had a ball.

We are hoping to see you, but if not, have a wonderful season. Please get in touch with me with any comments and suggestions.

You are never too old for “Super Slow

Training.” Year round the trained volun-teers from Bay Forest hold Bone Builder sessions on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30

am, but now The Secret is Out. Fitness clubs around the country are calling our

techniques, the exercise solution you’ve been looking for, evidenced based, and

time-efficient. The exercises are gaining popularity among people of all ages. In our classes after warming up the muscles, we

strengthen our core by lifting and lowering optional light arm and leg weights at a very

slow rate, keeping constant tension on the muscles. While trained class leaders

monitor proper form, techniques and tem-po, the muscles move against the bones causing stronger muscles and new bone

growth. The sessions end with some brief stretching to keep the ligaments elongated

and limber. This reduces body tension, improves range of motion and flexibility. Classes are open to all Bay Forest residents

and renters at no cost. 1 PM classes will begin on January 7th.

Collier County Park/RSVP Department requires a yearly Doctor’s release to participate in the program. Prior to attending class please visit the Bay Forest Office to pick up and read the participant instructions and complete the necessary paperwork.

The Naples Philharmonic Youth Symphonia will present a concert on Wednesday, February 19 during

Sunset Social. The buffet starts at 5 pm so come earlier and the

concert begins at 6pm.

It’s a potluck so bring enough for 6-8 people.

There will be musicians plus many of their parents, so a ticket assures you of a seat.

Only 4 tickets will be distributed per person getting ticket. Please, no attempts at reserving a

table. It’s first come, first seated, this is a very popular event.

Tickets will be available starting Wednesday, February 5 at Sunset Social.

There is no charge but, donations to the Symphonia are greatly appreciated.

With all of our many physical activities in full swing, it is very important to add stretching and warm up before starting your physical activity. There seems to be two thoughts on stretching sometimes leaving people with the wrong understanding resulting in not doing any stretching at all. Let me explain the differences and which forms of stretching should be done.

First is static stretching where you hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds at or near the end range of motion. More like what is done in yoga. Static stretching is effective in improving your range of motion. It helps in recovery and helps in injury management and prevention. It does not help you warm up and actually reduces the strength and power your muscles can produce in the next hour. It isn't what you want to do before working out in the fitness center, playing tennis, pickle ball or golf.

The other type is called fluid or dynamic stretching. It is great for warming up prior to your physical activity. this is where you move thru your range of motion repeating it several times. This increases your core temperature (Warm Up) and helps improve your performance. You gradually increase your intensity and speed. Your body temperature goes up and you are ready to participate.

So in summary before activity use fluid stretching or active movement to warm up which helps you play better and stronger.

After your done do some static stretches that will aid your range of motion and reduce future soreness. It will help you relax and recover. Most of all do them. Stretching is the most ignored part of physical activity especially by men, but can be the most important part of your activity keeping you

feeling better and preventing injury.

Try it ,you will like it.

P.S. Add a little static stretch of your tendon of Achilles to your fluid movements to help prevent injury before playing tennis or pickle ball.

Still welcoming back old and new players, getting ready

for our first free tennis clinic on Thursday, January 23,

2020 at 2:00 PM. Dick Morrissey will give us valuable

pointers as we anticipate our future games or just

sound fundamentals. Please wear flat tennis shoes.

Rackets and balls will be provided.

Captain Steve Chansky's traveling team is back at it,

featuring our first contest against Citrus Park,

a competitive match featuring two (count em') 2 tie breakers, Andy Guti and

John Leggiero winning on court one.

COME OUT AND ENJOY WATCHING BAY FOREST’S BEST PLAYERS.

The tennis crowd enjoyed its first party on January 19, the Meet, Greet & Eat informal at the

clubhouse at 12:30, immediately after the Sunday morning play. The next affair will also take

place in the clubhouse following an afternoon of blind draw mixed doubles on February

16. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and play with someone new to our

tennis community.

As more residents and guests return, the men's round robin is gaining members, the new folks

adding to the group hilarity under the tiki huts' thatched roofs.

Remember that the early sessions are reserved for the women's and men's round robins,

Monday through Saturday, Sunday mornings for mixed doubles. Free play for the rest of day

starts at 10:30 until noon, with afternoon contests beginning around 2 PM, after the courts are

watered.

The last party of the season takes place on March 15. It too follows an afternoon of blind draw

mixed doubles. The dinner portion doesn't begin until 6 PM, allowing players, families and

guests time to go home and prepare for this more formal event.

What! 2020! Where did 2019 go? When I talked to my 96-year-old uncle, however, he asked me "Where did the

last decade go?", so I guess time is relative. January is the start of the season in Bay Forest, and everything is up and

running. The clubhouse is a busy place, with yoga, book group, art classes, bone builders classes, meetings, ping-

pong, and on and on. Outside the clubhouse I see people catching (and releasing!) bass in the lakes, playing bocce,

pickleball, and tennis, as well as walking the paths and enjoying the warm Florida sunshine and beautiful Bay Forest.

Check out the calendar and I'm sure you can find something that you like to do.

Don't complain about being bored!

Some highlights from the January 15 board meeting are as follows:

Our incoming guest gate was demolished about mid-January, and will be fixed in the next week, hopefully. Our

new cameras gave a very clear video of the entire episode. The $10,500 or so cost will be picked up by the

driver's insurance company.

The Architectural Review Board, at the advice of our attorney, withdrew their disapproval ruling of The Cove's

planned new color scheme. Our documents are not specific as to building colors, and it was decided that the

ARB has no authority to regulate, in this case. We are looking into modifying our documents and adding an

approved color section.

We talked about adding two fountains to the South Lake. There were strong feelings on both sides of this ques-

tion, and an email poll will be taken of all residents to gauge interest. Rough costing will be developed by

Phil. We will talk more about this at the February board meeting.

The Pickleball Committee has accumulated a large list of players who desire another court at Bay Forest. We

must have at least 3 courts to become part of the competitive inter- association league. An ad hoc committee

will be formed to investigate if we have a place to put one or more new courts. They will also do the legwork

in contacting the appropriate Florida agencies and see about potential issues with water management. Since

our lake is an overflow lake, if we direct any runoff into the lake, there may be no issues. See Craig Pihl if

you want to help.

A discussion was held about purchasing a larger, 85” updated TV set in the Carlson Room. The existing 70”

TV is about seven years old, and there have been many improvements since this set was purchased. A board

vote was taken and passed. A new set will be procured, with the cost not to exceed $2500 . The funds will

come out of clubhouse reserves. It will be in place in time for the Super Bowl Party.

There are several possible uses for the old TV.

We are going to tune up our website, and to this end are seeking one or more photographers to supply us with a

series of Bay Forest photographs to be put onto the website. Needed are photos of not only the clubhouse, board-

walk, and the landscaping, but of people playing bocce, tennis, pickleball, and generally enjoying what Bay Forest has

to offer. We also need a regular supply of event photos, that can be added to the website. We need a year's worth of

party photos, Nights at the Phil, etc. that would be rolled over and replaced one by one with the most recent event.

Appropriate credit will be given. Let me, Phil, or Dave Knoebber know if you would like to help us out. We really

need one person to take all this over. Could that be you?

Thanks again to the Social Committee for a very successful, sold out Soup and Salad Party held on January 18. Bay

Forest folks love to eat, and managed to consume enough calories to carry them through the next week, or maybe

even to the Italian Night Dinner Dance on February 1! Life is good at Bay Forest!

As always, send me any comments or requests to my email address: [email protected] I hope to see you all

at the next regular board meeting on Wednesday February 12 @ 9:30 AM and at the Annual Meeting Wednesday

February 26 @ 6 PM.
