Tenken wasanother new position . . . [which]was formerly done by the Shuso. . . everyone disliked this taskand protested that they didn't want to be policemen. Another major change was meal serving. Formerly, the kitchen servedmeals. Now their dutiesdid not extend outside of the kitchen.

Roshi spent a great deal of time training the Doans to chant and perform the service. His voice . . . seems to come from the deepest regions of the earth.

T his training periodwasgiven itscharacter by the presence of TaisugamiRoshi . . . it was characterized bychanges. The first innovation was theestablishmentof theRokuchiji . . . theposition of Ina was new to us, and theDoan Rio, which is a sortof liturgicalorchestra.

10,000 YEAR BOOK,WINTER INTERIM 1977

Jan. 1978. Students go out to work inthe rain on culvert damaged by flood.Goingoverit, a portion of the roadsinks into the creek, truck alongwith it.

Jan. 16. When we awaken in themorning the creek is very loud. Waterhigh point is highestyet-splashingover bridge to bathhouse. Boarding upwomen's side of bathhouse only partlyhelpful. Drains areclogged with mudand silt. Students working in rain allday areexcusedfrom service. There isa strategy meeting regarding the towntrip for needed food and supplies. Allfour culverts are in badshape, and thevehicles areall on the wrong side (ourside). First priority becomes gettingthe vehicles across ford. One crewspendsday rebuilding ford wherebridge washed out. Other crews areworking on all culverts. Zendo schedule sameas usual. At afternoon workmeeting Ted Marshall gives flood safety info. Don't go beyondstone cabin 1or cabin 19 except in pairs. Also wearhardhats when going beyond the central area.

Feb. 7. The water level is above theprevious high water mark. A state ofemergency is declared, and MeasuresareTaken. Watchers aresent to cabin19, some to the baths. Many people aresent to dig drainage ditches. There is aslidewhich comes down by the door ofthe upper barn, keepingit shut.

Another large portion of the rockwallby cabin 1 falls into the creek. .. Allthe people who are sick in bedareinformed of the emergency, and note ismade of where they are. Some peoplecollect blankets, towels, first aid kits, and other emergency items. Raindiminishes, and most people return tothe regular schedule. Some of the students who have worked many extrahours go to bedone period early

Feb. 8. All culverts areout, and workis beingdoneon the ford, so that foodcan bebrought in across the road.HowardMcDonald, caughton the farsideof the ford, canget back to the central area only by climbing over part of"Flat Rock. t t

All furniture, bells, Buddha, andBuddhadrum areeithermovedfromzenda, or elevated from floor. Furniturein pine and stone rooms is elevated orremoved, and doors left open to lessenchances of buildings floating away. At5:40, the staff meets, decides thatunless the creek is more than four feet

higher, there will bezazen. The creekrises, so zazen in cancelled. Floodpatrols go on all night. People will allbesleeping in the eleven cabins immediately below the bridge.

Feb. 10. Tassajara Creek level is downone-halffoot, zenda is reassembled, andservice is held. There is still no coldwater in the baths. The main water lineto the cabins is now going through firehoses in the trees.

Feb. 17. Culverts areout, and there arewaterfalls wheresomeof them used tobe. Vehicles cannotget past Lime Pointwith food, so students arebringingfood in on their backs and in gardenway carts. There areonly twenty peopleat dinner. For them, evening sittingschedule as usual. The others areworking joju.

waterline from the reservoir was hookedup with firehoseasthe pipes had brokenso manytimes duringthe winter,so thepressurefrom there wasn' t sogood either.

I t wasall quite devastating. In just afew minutes, the zenda was consumedwith fire. The Buddha drum went upin flames almost immediately. . . themokugyo was burned. Thefire spreadto the office but the stone wall slowedit down . We kept the roofof the pinerooms wet and the area around theSycamore trees so the fire would notspread in that direction. At the sametime, the fire was spreading toward thekitchen and many people were wettingdown thewalls and roof of thekitchento slow it down. Luckily, the wall ofthe kitchen on the zenda side was aone-hour fire wall which the countyhad required us to put in, so thisslowed the firedown considerably. When sparks caught the shingles of thekitchen roof on fire, Paul Discoe and afew others climbed up there and tookaxes and cut away the burning shingles while others kept the building wet

SHUSO LOG, SPRING 1983

Projects today involve preparing for theThich Nhat Hanhvisit: finishing thedorm roof, repairing thesteps thatweredamaged in the tree fall; bringing backthestump of thefallen tree (Roshi'sidea-graphic indication ofwhy theareais a mess).

In April 1983, Richard Bakerbegan an indefinite leave ofabsence from Zen Center.

Yesterday Ino reminded folks that onlydoans wearwatches in the zendo/ andadded that anyonewhose watch beepswhen they are accidentally wearing it inthezendo should make formal apology atwork meeting.

10,000 YEAR BOOK, SPRING 1983

Later, coming out of dinner we sawthe "moon garden"piled highwith cutbranches, but evenso the tree was stillhooked on the roof. The biggest chainsaw (the45) wasn't starting and thelight wasfailing, so tree workstoppedand all involvedconcentrated on covering the roof, workingby flashlight. The zendo that eveningwasquiteempty feeling, and both the Ino and theShusofelt that the roaring of the creekand the lashing of the wind and rainwould be junko enough.

10,000 YEAR BOOK, SPRING 1983

During bathtime the big liveoakjustacross the pathfrom the northwestcorner of the dorm fell on the dorm. Onebranch penetrated s,traight down intoDavidM. 's room, endingabout11/2feet above his bed. Had he taken thequickbath and shortnap that hehadconsidered, hewould havebeen surprised, A large workcrewstartedimmediately to cut up the tree withchain sawsand axes, trying first toclear the roofso theholes could becovered,
