    Annotated Bibliography Assignment

Choose any author from our text. Pick a famous one! You must do an

annotated bibliography for resources related to that author. These will be

found in our online library. It must include 5 resources (articles, interviews, reviews, etc.) I want to hear your voice in the entries. Keep it formal, but do

    not cut and paste!

    WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents.

Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive andevaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is not only

to summarize the purpose of the source, but also to inform the reader of the

relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

    THE PROCESS

Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectualskills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research.

First, locate and record citations to documents that may contain useful information

and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the articles. Then choose thosearticles that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.

Second, cite the book, article, or document using the appropriate style (MLA).

Lastly, Write a concise annotation that answers the following questions:

What is the main idea of this source? (theme)

What is the author trying to do? (purpose)

Is there any bias, slant, or obvious omission? (credibility)

Who is the authors intended audience? (usefulness)

What is your impression of the article? (opinion)

    STUDENT SAMPLE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ENTRY

Barden, Thomas E. Steinbeck, John: Steinbeck in Vietnam.Arts and Humanities: 110-10. Print.

This article basically explains how John Steinbeck wrote a series of dispatches during the Vietnam War. He and his wife spent time in

Vietnam in 1966 and 1967 as John was working as a correspondent for Newsday. These dispatches that he wrote became his last ever

published work before he passed away in December of 1968. The article states that Steinbeck wrote with initial excitement over the

weaponry... and the heroic American soldiers standing against communism (110) but as the war dragged on there was a sense of

disillusion(110) and he started to think that the Americans were in an unwinnable situation (110). This article is a good starting

point, but the author didnt go into depth enough to really delve into Steinbecks time spent in Vietnam and prove anything significant

    about it.
