What if anything can be done to prevent such self-harm forums as pro-ana (pro-

anorexia, thinspiration, etc) from promoting self-destructive habits?

Gardner, Fiona. "Taylor and Francis eLibrary." Self-Harm: A Psychotherpeutic Approach.

    (2001): n. page. Print.

    .

This is a source that I found through the library database and it provides a scholarly and

more psychological outlook on the causes of the formations of the ideas that produce

these self-harm websites. This source talks about how the social scene of our current day

in time adds pressure to todays youth and causes them to strive to reach unattainable and

unrealistic expectations of their body image. The article also goes to explain some of the

psychological factors that encourage the social media to become an outlet for the

distorted body image, which is very popular among todays teens. This source is very

academic so it uses very technical terms that can be helpful for formulating and officially

supporting some of the terms within my paper. Also it can be useful for providing me

with specific reasons and tying into my research with details on the relationship between

body image and the way that it affects social media, our predominate form of technology.

This source is sort of a rebuttal to my source that came from The Huffington Post, yet it

also could arguably be seen as supporting it. This source is talking specifically about how

Pinterest reps may have made the ban but since they are not following through with

actually going through and getting rid of the inappropriate content, it is sort of a waste to

have created the ban in the first place. The site tried to reach Pinterest Reps for a

comment but they refused to comment. That shows how an underlying problem might not

be so much for the websites to ban the material, but should also go to follow that they

should actually take the time to eliminate it from their databases as well. I think that this

source is crucial because it also tells that since the ban on the thinspiration material, the

search and demand for it has gone up even more. This shows how there almost seemed to

be a reverse effect of the ban since even more people are gaining exposure of it. I think

that this source is effective and useful by providing me with the detailed terms and

services of interest, which provides me to use Pinterest as a specific example of a social

media that is being affected by this.

"Thinspiration, Thinspo, Skinny." Tumblr. Thincafe, n. d. Web. Web. 12 Mar. 2013.

    .

This source is a direct source on the issue of thinspiration. What it offers is dedicated to

entirely answering and pertaining to information about thinspiration and explaining about

some of the stipulations that come along with it. The FAQ section of this blog contains a

lot of helpful information including an actual definition of what the word thinspiration

means. Contrary to popular belief, thinspiration is not akin to being pro anorexic or pro

ana. The word Thinspiration simply means inspiration to be thin and healthy. Heres a

simple formula: Thinspiration = (Thin + Inspiration) (web.) This is the mindset that the

website bases their mission under. I think that this is an extremely relavent aspect for my

paper because it shows how thinspiration is not looked at as a bad thing by a lot of

people. My personal belief is that these websites are very damaging and harmful in the

way of their commonality of exposing people to self-harm and even going as far to

encourage it. It blows my mind that some people do not see this for what it truly is,

however I am glad that I found this source so that I can make sure to address this point

    within my paper.

"'Thinspo' Content Continues To Emerge Despite Bans From Online Communities Like

    Tumblr, Pinterest."Huffington Post. (2012): n. page. Print.

    .

This source is an article taken from The Huffington Post that discusses how even though

there is a ban on sites such as Thinspo and pro-ana, the reality is that it seems to be

near impossible for all of the content within these social medias to be censored, therefore

the information remains on the web as easily accessible as ever. It gives the example by

calling out Pinterest, a popular social media outlet that is basically a compilation of

image blogging, because of their existing ban of things that "creates a risk of harm, loss,

physical or mental injury, emotional distress, death, disability, disfigurement or physical

or mental illness to yourself, to any other person, or to any animal. (web.) However, the

reality is, that by typing in the hash tag #thinspo you can still easily find the content

within their website, which demonstrates either the lack of seriousness that is being taken

on this topic, or the extent of difficulty in the chance of being able to catch all of the

material from being added to the site. This article makes a good point by stating how

there is a very subjective line separating the encouragement of self-harm material, from

photos of women who are modeling and just have slim cut bodies. The Huffington Post is

known for being a very well established newspaper and I trust that this article is useful at

least for the different ideas that are presented throughout it. This article also supports my

previous guess, that it would be near impossible for their to be a legal way to address this

content because the internet is such a widespread and broad source of information, and

the Pinterest ordeal only makes me more sure of this. Another good point that I will find

useful in providing within my final paper, is when the article addresses several famous

supermodels by name who are arguing that these sites help girls feel a sense of belonging

and they have chosen this lifestyle for themselves. This is a thought that I might not have

considered since the topic of self-harm is not necessarily relevant in my life, yet it does

provide me with an ulterior perspective that I will be sure to use in my paper and further

    research.
