marinaandTownRiver.WhydahMuseum.Saturday,Feb.15.StorybyTommyLoandRR.PhotoscourtesyTommyLo&RR Johnwasalsoresponsible for organizing our field trip to theWhydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth, MA,which houses some of the $400 million dollartreasureandarXfactsBarryCliffordandhis salvageteam have extracted and preserved from thewreckageoftheonlypirateshipeverrecovered.TheWhydahwascaptainedbythenotoriousbuccaneer,SamBellamy.

Someofusmetattheclubhousetocarpooldown,while folks who live further southmet at Blackie’shouse to carpool to the museum. There were 25Neptunes and guests in all. As you walk into themuseum, you are greeted by the restored ship’sanchor. On my (Tommy’s) last visit to theWhydah

Museum in

Provincetown, Clifford and his crew had found the ship’sanchor and were running water over it as part of therestoraXonprocess.Itwasgreattoseethattheywereabletopreserve the anchor. The ship's bell was excavated and iscurrently sifng on display in water. Hopefully, they will beabletoremoveitfromthewaterandshineitup. As we made our way through the museum, numerous

arXfactswereondisplay.Inoneofthedisplaysthereweresmallbitsofgold.Irememberedreadinginthebook,Expedi=onWhydah,thetreasurehunterswereusingaturkeybastertopickupbitsofgoldbetween the rocks. In case youwerewondering, thewreck is buried in the sandunderneath 20’ ofwateronthesouthsideoftheCape.TofindarXfactsthetreasurehunXngcrewtookreadingswithamagnetometer and then used mailboxes, box-likecontrapXons placed over the salvage ship’s prop, toredirect the thrust of the propeller downward to blowaway the sand on the ocean floor. Then, divers woulddescendandsearchforthearXfactsontheboVom.Partofthemuseumtourissetuplikeanoldpirateship.Itwasgreattoseealloftherestoredrelicsinthemuseum.Therewasonepartthathadafewcannonsandanotherwheretheyhadan IronMaiden.Youcouldeventouchafewofthedoubloonsandpiecesofeights.

Thetourendsatawork-in-progressareawheretheyhad arXfacts, encased inconcreted material from the ocean, soaking in water as part of therestoraXonprocess.WhentheconcreXonisremovedfromthearXfacts,they can be restored and then added to the display. In one of thedisplaysinthelabarea,humanremainswerefoundthatweretracedtoanorthernEuropeanlineageviaAncestryDNA. ThebestpartofthetripwasmeeXngBarryClifford.Hecameoutandspokewithusforatleast30minutes,autographedcopiesofhisbooks,andposedforphotos.All inall,weenjoyedamemorable2-3hours inhisextremelywellcuratedmuseum.WithaliVleluck,wemaybeableto hold a club meeXng there someXme in the near future. So staytuned. Ajerwards,we dined at Capt. Parker’s seafood restaurant,which isdirectlyinfrontofthemuseum.Excellentfareforagreatdaythatwashadbyall.Thanks,John!

and Chuck dove dry, while Ross (1st NE dive) and Ken dove wet—anddropped32’downintointo36°water.Visasanexcellent20’,whichmadeitrelaXvelyeasytospottonsofhermitcrabs,plantlife,andatleasttwooversizedlobsters,butnokeepers—yet—duringour32-minutedive!

Sunday,February16&23.OldGardenBeach.StoryandphotosbyRobMyDiversofMassBaywinterdivebuddy,whodiveswet,andI(divedry)trackedtheweatherallweeklonganddecidednowwastheXmetomakearunfortheNorthShore.Asluckwouldhaveit,wereachedOldGardenandfoundtheseastobeflatasapancakeandthevistobe30feetormore.Ifyoucanimagineourdelight, then you will appreciate the fact thatwe literally jumped into our gear andheaded for thewater as fastas our legs could carry us and our equipment across the cobbles tothe beach. We both had had enough of pond diving and wereanxiously chomping at the bit to return to the ocean world. InaddiXon, my new wide-angle lenshadjustarrivedandIwaseagertotry it out. You will noXce the strong redhue in somephotosdue tomyforgefngtochangeoneof thesefngs,somostofthecolorisnot

accurate. Hopefully, I'll have thiscamerasquaredawaynextXme. Ajer a brief swim out from thebeachatverylowXde,wedroppedin around 12 feet of water andslowly followed the rock sand lineto the land of the of the giantbouldersontherighthandsideand

the slope that points downto the 42 feet mark. He and my buddies helped me finishgearingup. Aswe headed down to the pond, twomore divers, also fromDiversMarket, showed up tomake a dive, one ofwhom I knewandhaddivedwithacoupleofsummersagoonwhatislejoftheNewHampshirewreckfromcolonialXmes. Onceinthepondwithourfinson,weheadeddownandstartedcoolingoff.Mynewcamera--SeaLifereplacedmydeadonewithabrand new one for FREE!--was working fine, as were my newphoto-videocamlights,butIcouldn’tfigurewhytheredfilterwason.Turnsout Ihad it set fordivesdeeper than25,'andweonlymaxed at about 20’ or so.My last few shots came outwith therightlook,insteadofaredone.SomephotosI’vechangedtoblackandwhitebecausetheredwastoointense. I’ve been using a 3-finger ultra warm 7 mm thick miV, made byWaterproof,onmylejanda5-finger7mmgloveonmyrightbecause

it’seasiertoputononceI’vedonned the 3-finger miV.Also, it’smore flexible and easier to usewithmy camera,although I can use 3-finger miVs on both hands with mycamera as well. The trade off is my right hand gets coldmuchfasterthanthelej.Five-fingerglovesarenomatchforwarmth when compared to 3-finger miVs of the samethickness,nomaVerwhattheytellyouinthediveshopsorthosewhowear5-fingermiVsclaim.Anyway,myrightindexfinger was beginning to freeze up, so I was just fine withcufngoffthedive.Itwasashortdivebecauseonediverinmygrouponlyhada thirdof tank lejwhenwebegan the

dive. Water temp was 37°, vis around 15,' our depth was 20'; dive Xme was @15-16 minutes.Regardless, we enjoyed a great dive together.Steaming cups o' Joe and coffee rolls from Dunkin'completedagreatmorningdivingintoit.Youshouldtryit!Youmightevenlikeit!!

MEETING SCHEDULE:

Regular Member Meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month. The meeting begins at 7:00pm.

Board of Directors Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. The meeting begins at 7:00pm. 3rd Tuesday Member Meetings are informal gatherings for members, family and friends. The meeting begins at 7:00pm. HOW TO JOIN THE CLUB: Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the South Shore Neptunes Skindivers Club, Inc., is invited to attend any of the Regular Member or Board of Directors Meetings. Membership is open to all sport divers and other interested persons. Applications for membership are available at the Clubhouse. Completed applications must be submitted with the initiation fee to the club at a Board of Directors Meeting. The Board of Directors reviews and votes on the applications. Applications accepted by the Board are then presented to the regular membership for a Club Vote at the next Regular Member Meeting. Applicants are required to attend both of these meetings. Membership Fees

$25.00 Initiation Fee: This is a one time fee collected at the time of application for membership. $35.00 Annual Dues: Regular Membership Dues are to be paid by the first Regular Member Meeting of the year. $10.00 Corresponding Membership Dues. Junior and Student Memberships are also available.
